O'Berry and/or Berry in VA 1600-1700

Hello. My grandmother is an O'Berry. The last few generations of her family have lived in Evergreen, NC. I have tracked her line back to VA in the early 1700's as well.

My research shows that most of the O'Berry families immigrated out of England and Berry families out of Ireland.

Our family story is that we are Black Irish from the Cork area of Ireland. This is not supported by any facts, just family story told through the generations. Also, the story goes on to say that our original ancestors came over as indentured servants.

My grandmother tells me that it is possible that our ancestors changed the name Berry to O'Berry. Placing an "o" in front of the name simply means son of. My theories are one of two: a)our family either immigrated out of England or b)our family, if Irish, changed the name from Berry to O'Berry during this timeframe.

I would love to know if anyone could help clear up some of this up. I am stumped around what happened in the line around 1690-1710. Someone was born and I believe was my first generation American or immigrated over. Once I have this link, I believe I can carry on to make the European connection which is what I most desire.

Thank you!

Melissa

Hi Terri,
Thank you for putting this message out there. I am Jesse's sister and we definitely want to get the word out about the reunion. It use to be a big one but has dwindled over the last few years. I plan to start working on some of the Pasco lines. We are descended from Joseph William O'Berry and Artie Francis Durrance. Joe was the youngest of the brothers that came to Florida after the war.
I hope you are able to come to the reunion. I look forward to meeting you.
Jan (Janice Stokes Thomas)

It seemed, however, that harmony and brotherly affection was not to be enjoyed for any length of time. Parallel and contemporary with the mission split was the anti-Masonic movement among the Primitive and Regular Baptists. When the resolution was passed in 1830 against missions nonfellowship was also declared against those joining the Masonic fraternity. As early as 1826 much dissension existed between the Baptists and the members of the Masonic order. The controversy was renewed when many of the Baptist joined the fraternity, and it was not infrequent that the ministers themselves belong to that institution. The friction became so acute that James S. Battle, John W. Mayo, and others were appointed as a committee by the church to draw resolutions against members of the Baptist Church joining the Masons or visiting their lodges.
In the meanwhile several of the Baptists were denied the privileges of the church for not renouncing Masonry and other secret organizations. In May 1855, Thomas O'Berry, who was afterward a preacher, was tried before the church conference for joining the Know-Nothing Society. Mr. O'Berry answered the charges against him in person, and stated that he was sorry that he joined the society, and that he had been foolish in so doing. The church for gave him, but at his confession he stated also that he had visited the Masonic fraternity. Charges were then preferred against him for belonging to that order. Mr. O'Berry refused to say that he was sorry and that he would withdraw from the organization. The church accordingly expelled him for violating the church regulation. Some years later Mr. O'Berry recanted and was readmitted into the Baptist Church.
Footnote: James Ellenor, Thomas O'Berry, and others were first licensed in the church at Tarboro."
Per: History of Edgecombe County North Carolina by J. Kelly Turner and Jno. L. Bridgers Jr. Page 424 and 425

Per: History of Edgecombe county, North Carolina.
GGG Grandmother Quest

To the Barnes, Cates, Kates, O’Berry, Reese, Reece, Sherod, Sherrod, Wilson, Booth, Prentice, Prentiss, Crumer, and Cromer Families:

I am turning to all families that may be connected to my current quest:

My 2nd Great Grandmother was Laura Cates Barnes. Her middle name may have been Kate. According to census records, she was born in Florida; death records provide her birth date as 26 Sep 1845; passed away on 1 Nov 1907, Kissimmee, Osceola, FL. They are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Kissimmee, FL. Laura Cates married James Alpheus Barnes about 1865. James Alpheus Barnes was the son of Benjamin Barnes, who was son of Jesse Barnes...of South Carolina.

Laura Cates and James Alpheus Barnes had the following children:
1)	Elizabeth Waller Barnes, b: 1 Dec 1867, Lake City, Columbia County FL; married James Franklin O’Berry
2)	Benjamin Reese Barnes; b 26 Jul 1869; Lake City FL; died 1870
3)	Sherod (Sherrod) Alpheus Barnes; b 4 Nov 1870; died 1872
4)	George Theodore Barnes; b 24 Mar 1872; died 1917
5)	Rosa Jane Barnes; b 10 Mar 1874; died 1879
6)	Ola Verdelia Barnes; b 17 Jul 1876; died 15 May 1936 (married Daniel T. Wilson “Dede”)
7)	William C. Barnes; b 13 Oct 1879;

Tracing the ancestry of Laura Cates has become a nightmare. I have all the census records “after” her marriage to James Alpheus Barnes. I have followed up “family” leads, expanded my search to NC, GA, TN, AL and TX. In desperation I started studying the names of her children for clues, which has led me on a very interesting study of the following families: Sherod, Sherrod, Reece, and Reese.

I have stumbled upon the following information that seems to mean nothing, but could provide a breakthrough:
•	In 1842, a Mary Reece, born 1825 in TN married a Robert H. Sherrod, born 1816 in TN.
•	On July 2, 1882 in TX, a Mary Elizabeth Cates married Granville Sherrod (born 8 May 1859 in TN, son of John “Jack” Sherrod). Mary Elizabeth Cates was daughter of William D. Cates (b 5 Dec 1831, TN) and Martha M. Booth (b 15 Aug 1841).
•	In Maine, I discovered an Ola Cates...no further information.
•	In Alabama, 1849, a Malinda Cates purchased property Alabama.
•	In “The Ancestors & Descendents of Carroll Prentice” it is stated that Samuel Wesley Prentice, (son of William Prentice) born 20 January 1809 in Louisville, Jefferson Co. Kentucky; married Malinda Crumer Cates 1848.
•	The 1850 Marshall AL census shows a Malinda Prentice living with Cates children, including a Laura Cates age 4.
•	The 1860 Marshall AL census shows Malinda and Samuel Prentice with children including Laura Prentice age 14.
•	The 1870 Marshall AL census shows Malinda and Samuel Prentice with children and Laura Cates age 24.

I would very much appreciate any help in solving the mystery regarding my GGG grandmother Laura Cates O’Berry.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Barbara Bretthauer Marquez Froyland
bfroyland@comcast.net

Hi, my name's Natoshia and Donna is my mother. I know it's been a couple of years since your call with my mother but if you can remember anything else she might have said during your conversation I'd love to know. As far as I know she sill hasn't found my grandfather or my uncle, and now my sister and I are giving it a shot, we're starting out with most likely less that my mother did, so anything might help. I've gotten a few leads so far but nothing that's panning out.

Though just recently my sister has talked to my grandmother and from the conversation my uncle who until recently we thought of as Danny may actually be named Donald as well as my grandfather. But it's still an unknown, my grandmother hasn't been the most forthcoming with information.

my email is - wildchild_1969_2000@yahoo.com - please if you know anything that might help lead me in the right direction email me. I want to at least have spoken once to my grandfather before he leaves this world.

Would love to contact anyone with O'Berry information. We are related to John W White and Martha L (Hunter) White. We found John W White buried in Calvary Episcopal Cemetery with Martha's father=Weldon Smith Hunter and mother Nancy (Griffith) Hunter in section 46 with the O'Berry's. John W. White was a cabinet maker on Main Str in Tarboro and we see the O'Berry's living just a few houses down from the Bond's, Hunters. Can anyone shed some light why they are buried with Hunter-White?

Joel Spikes was my great great grandfather. As you know, he was killed in CSA. I haven't found any information on him to amount to anything. I have no idea where he is buried. His wife Julia Nobles Spikes had a brother named Thomas who married Unity Spikes, Joel's sister.
Julia lived with her son William Henry and wife Elizabeth until she died and I believe she is buried in Paulk Cemetary in Willacoochee, GA her daughter and William and wife are all buried there so I would think she would be also, but I have no proof of this. I haven't been able to locate any information on her either.
Hope this helps some.
You can contact me at cadibratt@comcast.net
Thanks
Delane
I am pretty sure that I am a decendent of the 1st Solomon O'Berry you mentioned. My grandfather's name was Solomon, his grandfather's name was Solomon and I think there was an earlier Solomon in my family ancestors. I don't know when they emigrated to the US. Would love to know where they lived before they emigrated.
PS: My great-grandfather was John Marion O'Berry and he lived in Blackshear, GA before moving to Blanton, Florida,(after the Civil War) where my grandfather Solomon was born.
I would like to exchange information.

African American OBERRYS

I am looking for African American Oberrys from Alabama. My ggrandmother was listed as Cherry Oberry in the 1870 U S Census along with her son Paul, who is my grandfather. In 1878 Cherry was a Jefferson on her marriage records to Otto Clarke. She had four children at that time, Paul, Louisa, Felix, and Corine.

There were eleven Oberrys listed in Hale County, Alabama in the 1870 census. All were llisted as B on the census, with the exception of Wilson Oberry, who was listed as M and had been listed as W on the 1860 and 1850 census records and was listed as overseer. I will post the names of the other eleven Oberrys later.
ANN
I can't seem to find my grandfather or anyone further back in any record other than the family bible. His name was James Woodcod O'Berry son of Thomas William O'Berry and Lucinda Harris. I know they came from the south but that's all I have, any help would be great.
Heather

I also believe that O'Berry or Oberye are just forms of the surname Aubrey which is of French derivation but also common in England.

I am Anna Catherine Oberry (no ').This is just a beginning for me, but my grandfather was born I know in Va. and I beleive it was Suffolk. He was sent to Georgia, Hawkinsville
His name was John Washington Oberry. He lived his life mostly in Macon Ga. In his later years his son my father GGeorge Glover Oberry moved him to Atlanta to take care of hhim. He died in Atlanta. I was three when he died. that would be around 1947. Don't know if James and John are brothers. My grandfather was probably born after the civil war.

Tracy, you seem to be very familier with the area of Millwood, Axon, Pearson & Willacoochee area.
I have a question which really doesn''t have a thing to to with the Oberrys, just a childhood facination.
Do you by any chance recall ever hearing or seeing a big old farm house that sat off the road on the right hand side just before you get into Willacoochee going west on Highway 82. They used to call the place Pinebloom and the talk was that it was haunted. I left for many years and when I returned the house had been torn down or fell down. You can barely see the outline now of where it used to stand.
I would love to know the history of this old place. I have heard so many different stories on why people said it was haunted. As I recall, I don't remember anyone ever living there.
Do you know anything about this old place?

Hi I am also related to William O'Berry who married Flora Hubble and is buried in Holly, MI. The family was farmed out to other families to raise the kids. I can't prove yet that the William living with the Kelseys is my William but am willing to bet on it.
