O'Bannon family in West Virginia
Hi! I'm looking for information on Lee (Leo on 1880 Census) Constantine O'BANNON (spelled O'BANION on another census).Specific information I was looking for was where he was in 1900.
Information I know: He was born 14 Nov 1866 in West Virginia (probably Jefferson County) and died 26 Aug 1944 in Charlestown, WV. He was never married and according to my grandfather (now deceased) Lee was my great-great-grandmother's ( Ida C. PAINTER ALLEN ) live-in lover for many years. In 1900, Ida was living with her husband & 2 sons in Maryland (Washington County). Before that, the ALLEN family had been in Charlestown. Ida's husband, George, died in 1901 and she moved back to Charlestown between then and 1910. By 1910, Lee was living with her, listed as "Boarder" and on a later census, he's listed as "Uncle" to my great-grandfather.
On Lee's death certificate, it lists his father as Alfred O'BANNON (b. in Jefferson County) and his mother is Jane GALLAHER. On the 1880 Census for Alfred O'BANNON, Jane is listed as his daughter, with "Leo" as one of his four grandchildren. (The other O'BANNON children listed were: Henry b. abt 1858, Mollie & Fannie, twins, b. abt 1872)

Re: O'Bannon family in West Virginia
Hope you get help! I'm going to look into it a little more with the resources I've found since I researched the O'Bannons last. I know they're not really related to me, but I absolutely love doing the research, doesn't matter who it's for! Anything I can help you with, I'd be glad to!

Re: O'Bannon family in West Virginia
Interestingly, I just found birth listings for Mollie & Fannie O'BANNON-2 Jun 1873-Mother is listed as Jane O'BANNON & father is Tho. (Thomas) ENSHAW, occupation listed as "tinner", Charlestown, WV.
Mollie O'BANNON had a son, Charles Henry O'BANNON, (father unknown) who was born 7 Apr 1896 & died 2 July 1860. He married Leola McGuire JOHNSON 30 Nov 1918, both are listed as being 21 at the time (Charles would've been 22, actually).
Also found on the death register: Anna Currie O'BANNON, b. 23 July 1905, d. 31 Oct 1958, daughter of John Downey CURRIE & Ella WOOD (not sure how/if she's related by marriage somewhere).
Mollie's death registration shows she was born 2 June 1869 (although birth register says 1873) & died 22 May 1963. Her father there is listed as Thomas E. O'BANNON & mother listed as unknown (Her father's real name was Thomas ENSHAW, her mother never married him).
I found a registration for Jane O'BANNON, 92, died 9 March 1874. I'm assuming this may have been Alfred O'BANNON's mother, Jane's Grandmother, Mollie's Great-Grandmother.
Alfred O'BANNON, Mollie's grandfather, died 12 Nov 1891, at age 83.

Re: O'Bannon family in West Virginia
I am related to this leg of the O'Bannon family...there is much confusion with some of the information...mostly I think because Alfred did not want to admitt that his wife Frances Gallagher O'Bannon left sometime around 1860...and moved to Missouri with their daughter Sarah Elizabeth O'Bannon Holden. Jame was definitly their daughter...and I find it strange that Alfred shows on some documents as the father to one of his grandchildren. Jane became pregnant sometime around the time that her mother left her father. I have been reseaching this part of my family as of late... and have found alot of things but still organizing it. Would love to hear what else anyone else has found. I would appreciate seeing the documents that others have found and or the links to those documents. Willing to share anything I find. Melody

Re: O'Bannon family in West Virginia
Perhaps, like with many children born out of wedlock, Alfred decided to "claim" Jane's child as his own. I know of at least one of my ancestors who claimed their grandchild (born from unwed parents) as their own child.

Re: O'Bannon family in West Virginia
Hi.... Tonight while looking a little deeper into the O'Bannon's and Earnshaw's..... turns out they are blood related.
Jane Hunt O'Bannon and Enoch O'Bannon are the parents of Alfred O'Bannon and Elizabeth O'Bannon. Alfred O'Bannon and Frances Gallagher are the parents Jane F. O'Bannon. Elizabeth O'Bannon Harrell and Steward Harrell were the parents of Rebecca J Harrell. Rebecca J Harrell Earnshaw and Thomas Earnshaw were the parents of Thomas Earnshaw..... Thomas Earnshaw and Jane F O'Bannon were the parents of Mollie and Fannie O'Bannon. So Jane and Thomas were not only 14 years apart they were also cousins once removed. Have looked at the census records several times... but tonight the names all connected at last.
