William Jasper O'Banion, Jones/Wilkinson Co GA
Does anyone have a connection with the O'Banion/O'Bannons of Jones or Wilkinson Co. Georgia?
Mine fit in there somewhere but so far are a puzzle. William Jasper O'Banion was born 1820-25 in Wilkinson or Jones Co, married Elizabeth Tatum in 1841 (Wilkinson Co). Had one child (Jesse Lee O'Banion) in 1842, then died or disappeared by 1848 when Elizabeth remarried.
He was the son of a William O'Banion of Jones Co, who also died young. "William O'Banyan's orphans" won land in 1827 Lottery, and a 1837 court document refers to "Lee Duncan guardian of Eliza Ann and William Jasper O'Banion, orphans of William O'Banion deceased". This first William may have married Polly BARGAINER. There is a William O'Banion in Jones Co on the 1820 Census, next door to Margarey Barganer (mother in law?). I'm trying to figure out the DUNCAN connection, and track down the sister Eliza Ann who may have married Jacob FREEMAN.
I know of the John O'Bannon/O'Banion in Wilkinson County, but not sure how mine may be related to them. Any help appreciated!

Re: William Jasper O'Banion, Jones/Wilkinson Co GA
I have bits and pieces on the same names you have, so, if you'll contact me at my e-mail address, we might be able to link them up. I have the William of Jones Co who m. Polly Bargainer and the John of Wilkinson Co as brothers, sons of Bryant O'B and Ruth Burgess. Bryant and Ruth also had a third son, Dawson Burgess O'B, plus supposedly a daughter, name unknown, who m. a Benjamin Nelson. The William who m. Polly Baragainer was also known as "Willis" and Jones County, GA marriage book A-290 shows William and Polly married 7 Jan 1819, so this jibes with your 1820 census finding. I have this William/Willis as born about 1786 in Surry Co, Wright Dist. of NC, and dead in Jones Co. GA by Sep. 1836. HOWEVER, I do not have the names of their children, but I have seen the name William Jasper O'B somewhere, so your posting may be a breakthrough. Incidentally, the descendents of William's brother, Dawson Burgess O'B, have been well traced--most wound up in LA. So let's get in touch directly. It would help if you provided the names of your O'B ancestors from you back to these O'B's in GA. I have some 10,000 names in my O'Bannon/O'Banion data base, so maybe yours are there, too.

Re: William Jasper O'Banion, Jones/Wilkinson Co GA
William and Polly O'Banion's children were William Jasper and Eliza Ann. William had died by 1827 because his orphans drew land in the lottery. In 1836 Lee Duncan was appointed their guardian and their lottery land in Troup was sold. Eliza Ann married Joseph G. Bonner and W. J. married Betsy Tatum. In the early 1840's Bryant O'Bannon, W. J. and Joseph G. Bonner sold land land that had been owned by Martha O'Bannon and probably Elijah in the part of Jones County that once part of Baldwin. Have documentation on all of this that I will be happy to share.
I have been assuming that William (father of William Jasper) was the son of Elijah (died before 1821) and Martha. There is a William O. Binion in the 1820 census enumerated next to Margaret Barganer.

Re: William Jasper O'Banion, Jones/Wilkinson Co GA
Thanks for your post! This matches some of what I have, but there is still a question as to whether William (father of William Jasper) was the son of Bryant O'Bannon or of Elijah O'Bannon. I would love to see the document of the land sale in the 1840s you mentioned. It sounds like WJ and his sister were selling off their inheritance, if Martha and Elijah were their parents. But how does Bryant fit in?

I am wondering if Bryant was brother to William and uncle of William Jasper.
