Hi,

I was am a descendent of the Oake line and am from Clinton Iowa. I am not familiar with a family farm in the Charlotte area. Can you give me a little more info such as the names attached to it and I will see what I can find out. My mom is still in the area.

I just recently read some information that indicated it was near Deep Creek about 9 miles southeast of Maquoketa. The name would have been William Royal Oake.

Let me do a little checking. As I recall everything I have puts them in Sabula and I believe they are buried there as well although I think in his diary that was published it talks about the farm (On the Skirmish Line Behind a Friendly Tree: The Civil War Memoirs of William Royal Oake, 26th Iowa Volunteers ).

I just recently purchased the book and just started reading. I have also checked the cemetery and cemetery records and know they are all buried there. I'm still trying to figure out how to attach a document about their trip here from England but for some reason, it will not accept it. Will keep trying. Also, do you know if the Oake family from Clinton that ran the lumber company is related?

Surnames: Oake
No not to my knowledge, but my folks have both been in Clinton since the 40's and I'm sure I would have known. The main lumber company when I was growing up was owned by the Joyce's. The Oakes that I grew up knowing were Elsie (my grandmother), Cyril and Lloyd. They where the children of Bertha and William. Bertha (my great grandmother) died when I was about 12 so I remember her pretty well. I will be talking to my mom tomorrow night and will double check with her on the lumber company.

Spoke with my mom. The lumber yard owned by Oakes was no relation. The farm as she recalls was close to Sabula and Delmar but she wasn't sure of the exact location. she is going to ask her sister and see if they can pin point it more closely. I'll let you know when I get an update. I am changing laptops and don't have my Family Tree software set up as yet. Once it is, I would be happy to send you a copy of all I have (dates back to the 1500's). Just let me know.
