I am a descendant of Nathaniel Oak (~1645-1721) of Marlborough, Massachusetts. My ancestors (Jonathan, Abel, Stephen, George, William....) moved onto the Maine territory, Pennsylvania, then westard to Illinois, Iowa, and South Dakota, with the surname changing to Oakes and Oaks. I would be interested in sharing information.

I have for years been trying to determine the parentage of Stephen Oaks (1761-1835) I first find him in 1790 in Charlton MA, I am descended from his son Orrin Oaks (1804-1875) b in Stephentown NY. On Orrin's death certificate someone had written his parents were William and Euphema Oaks and I am thinking perhaps that they are his grandparents instead. What can you tell me about your William Oaks. TIA

William was my great-grandfather, born in 1877 in Iowa. I looked through the family register of Nathaniel Oak, published in 1906. It lists three generations of his descendants and the only Stephen listed is my ancestor. He was born in 1795 in Maine, married Sally/Sarah Jane Ames, moved to Pennsylvania, and died there around 1875. There are several William's listed, but none that were married to a woman named Euphema.

Doyle, thanks for the info, still brickwalled, rats!
Do you happen to have any info on an Abijah Oaks who was married to a Hannah Clemmons? I have a suspicion he was related to my Stephen Oaks. Both were in Charlton MA in 1790. TIA

See my John Oak(e)s note this forum.
The Nathaniel Oak book of 1906 indicates my John Oaks was not a descendant of Nathaniel, but probably the brother of William Oaks also in Worcestor Co. MA, son of William Oaks, a traditional immigrant from Wales. Maybe you and I are looking for the same William?

My Oaks went from Charlton MA to Stephentown NY btwn 1790 and 1800, then to Cherry Valley NY btwn 1820 and 1830. My earliest entry is Stephen Oaks b. 1761 in MA, next door is Abijah Oaks (cousins, brothers?) in the 1790 census. My William Oak's are descended from Stephen and that's where I'm stuck. Stephen Oaks married Experience Goodell, daughter of David Goodell of Charlton. I have 10 children from that union.
