A Liverpudlian Oag from Wick
I wonder if any of you Oagists lurking out there can shed some light on this somewhat itinerant member of the clan .
1.William Oag died in the 4th Quarter of 1907 in the West Derby District of Liverpool .His stated age was 71 giving a birth date of c. 1836. His occupation was “ retired cooper “ 2. The census of 1901 sees William listed as a pauper living in the Luton Street Branch Poorhouse Liverpool . Age given as 71 and occupation “ cooper “ . 3. The 1891 census finds him living in Liverpool and married age 48 ( born 1843) His occupation again was given as a cooper but there was a wee bonus when the enumerator goes beyond the calls of duty to tell us he was born in “ Wick Scotland “ . He is living with wife Janet born Glasgow and aged 44. There are 3 children all born in Liverpool 4.In the 1881 census he and Janet and the kids are in Liverpool His age is given as 48 ! 5. He married Janet in Liverpool in 1876 - she was a widow and he a bachelor . Ages were stated as “ full “ .which presumably means he was of the age of consent ! He is a cooper and his father is given as “ William Oag mariner “, 6. Five years earlier in the 1871 Census , William is a boarder in Great Yarmouth Norfolk and unmarried age 35 ( born 1836 ) . 7.I turned to the 1861 census and thought I had found him residing with his mother at Brown Place Wick . His age was 23 ( born 1838 )and he is a cooper . His mother is Isabella Bain a widow of 56 and also in the house is his brother John McKay aged 17 .
I discovered a posting in 2004 from Carol Martin which would indicate William’s mother was Isabella Bremner who had married in Sarclet to Donald Bain in 1821 . Who was the William Oag , mariner , father to the adopted Liverpudlian Oag ?

Re: A Liverpudlian Oag from Wick
Hi Col,
I can't be any help with the Oags from Liverpool, but I do know that the William Oag, son of Isabella Bain/Bremner/Oag is my Great Great Grandfather. He married Jane Sutherland in 1862 and died in Brown Place, Pultneytown Wick in 1903. I hit a brick wall with my research at this point because Isabella Bremner seemed to have had quite an 'interesting' life (2 husbands and an illegitimate son!)
Best wishes, Jane

Happy to help with Info in SCT and beyond as I have compiled extensive research on my Oag families.

Re: A Liverpudlian Oag from Wick
Hi Col in Crieff! I think there must be 2 William Oags born at a similar time. Wm Oag b.c. 1838, son of Isabella Bremner and William Oag married Jane Sutherland on 26.12.1862 in Waterloo, Par of Wick, Caithness. He died on 1.1.1903 at 11 Brown Pl, Pulteneytown, Wick. The William you speak of in the 1861 census is the William above. In 1871 he was at 35 Wellington St, Wick; In 1881 15 Wellington St, Wick; in 1891 at 29 Brown Pl and in 1901 at 11 Brown Place, Wick. He was a cooper. From the Old Parish Records 2 May 1834: "Oag, William, farmer in Thrumster was matrimonially contracted to Isabel Bremner there. John Bremner day labourer in Thrumster cautioner for the man and James Bremner, farmer in Thrumster for the woman note attached by the minister: this didn't go forward AH - [Isabella Bremner]had been previously married to Donald Bain". Donald Bain died in 1838
