Oag family in Caithness area
Hi,
Just came across the Oag name in my tree. Hoping someone out there maybe able to help.....
Christian Oag born 1804 Wick, Caithness. Parents: Father - John Oag, Mother - Janet Anderson Siblings: Ann Oag 1794, Alexander Oag 1796, John Oag 1797, William Oag 1802
Christian Oag married James Simpson in 1824 Wick, Caithness, Scotland.
On several future Scotland Census returns her name is written up as Christina, instead of Christian.
Looking forward to hearing from you, Regards, Judith (Australia)

Re: Oag family in Caithness area
Hi Judith,
I do have some info regarding this family in my Oag database. The parents were married 6 Sep 1793 (from IGI BUT form submitted NOT extracted) but can be found at Scotlandspeople.gov.uk (for a small fee). Of Cristian's siblings I know no more than their baptisms.
The only other info I have is a transcript of Christian's death cert (1877) if you are interested.
Regards,
Val Oag

Re: Oag family in Caithness area
Hi Val,
Thank you for the quick reply, and yes, I would appreciate a copy of the death certificate of Christian. My last trace of Christian was on the 1871 Scotland Census living at Shore Lane, Wick, Caithness. She was listed as the head, living with 2 grandchildren, Mary Leith aged 14 and Robert Begg aged 11. Then I was unable to find her in the 1881 Scotland Census. So your death certificate will provide me with the date of her death, and enable me to stop searching further on the Census records.
It is actually the children of Christian and James that I am now following through on, so my hunt now turns to the Simpson name. I don't know if you possibly have any further information at all, but I have her children as being - - William b 1825 - Janet b 1827 - Charlotte b 1829 - John b 1831 - Mary Ann b 1834 - James b 1836 - Margory b 1839
Some of the above married, and several of their children carried on the Oag name via their middle names.
Looking forward to viewing the death certificate.
Regards, Judith

Re: Oag family in Caithness area
Hi Judith,
My real interest are Oags so rarely follow on beyond a name change.
Here is my transcript. As you will see the info is not all correct. This could be because the family did not register the death, instead it was the Inspector of the Poor.
No: 43, 92 Who: Catherine SIMPSON, Pauper, What: widow of James SIMPSON, Boat carpenter Where: Shore Lane, Wick Date: 4 May 1877 Age: 70 years Father: James OAG, Fisherman, deceased. Mother: Christina OAG, ms ANDERSON,deceased. Cause: Apoplexy, 12 hours. Signee: Inspector of the Poor
Hope this is helpful.

Re: Oag family in Caithness area
Thanks for this, Val, it has been most helpful.
Let me know if you ever would like information on Christian's children, and their families, and I will pass on what I have. I do understand about not following after a name change.
Regards, Judith
