I am researching my maternal grandmother's family, Oags, who came from Thrumster, Sarclet, and Wick, Caithness at the beginning of the last century.I nkow that some Oags moved to London, Ontario at that time.I have done some family tree research and have traced back to abt. 1860. I would be grateful for any further information or contacts with Oag descendants. regards, Harry.

Found your query on the OAG Message Board.
I have been researching the Oag tree that had its roots in Caithness. If you are willing to share your information I may be able to take your branches back closer to the roots. My info goes back to the mid 1700's so hopefully I should have something for you.

Dear Valerie, We're back after a good holiday in France and although I'm still trying to get the place straight after our move from Milton Keynes to the Wirral,I'm anxious to return to the business of genealogy!I had some fantasic information on The Craibs, my wife's maternal grandmother's family from someone in Ontario who turned out to the gg-son of David Craib from Banffshire-- My wife is a gg-grand-daughter of the same David Craib. I certainly willing to exchange information on the Oags. This was my maternal grandmother's surname, and I hope to hear from you soon, Regards, Harry.

Harry,
Glad you had a good holiday, ours was pleasant and very peaceful (just what we want away from the rat-race we call our jobs!!)
Well, who was your maternal g-grandmother and who were her parents. Armed with this info I should hopefully be able to tell you about her ancestors. Even if she is not on my tree I have collected so much info about the Caithness Oags (up to c1900) that I still should be able to help.

Regards Val

Dear Val, thanks for the message. My maternal g-grandmother was Isabella Bremner, born Thrumster, Caithness about 1859. She died Thrumster, Aug.05, 1911. My maternal g- grandfather was John Oag, born Thrumster, 1856, died March 14, 1929. They married December 20, 1878 in Wick. If you would like any further details e.g.names of their eleven children, parents of John Oag, etc. e-mail me at harry.salmon@talk21.com I am afraid I don't as yet know the names of Isabella Bremner's parents, Regards Harry.

Dear Val
I saw your message to harry wondered if you could help me. I have got my husband's grandfather as David Oag born 6.5.1876. He was a Baker by trade and born in Wick. He married Johan Bain (b.4.10.1876) on 23.12.1893. His father was William Oag who was a Cooper and he married Jane Sutherland on 22.12.1862. Johan Bain's father was William Bain and he married Janet Bain 14.11.1857. Have you any information on any of these people? I would love to hear if you have. Please e-mail with any information.
Kind regards, Sheila

Sheila,
Glad you called. I am sorry I did not get back to you sooner but have been working abroad.
I have not yet found a link to my tree with your branch of the Oags of Caithness. As you can see from below I have limited information on this branch as there is difficulty getting back beyond William and Isabel BREMNER.

David M. 23 Dec 1893 Johan BAIN

William M. 26 Dec 1862 Jane SUTHERLAND
Catherine B. 1863, D. 1895 M James BREMNER
William B. 1865
John MacKay B. 1869 M Lucy EDGAR
Isabella B. 1871, D. 1890 ----
Christina C. 1873, D. 1877
David B. 1876 M Johan BAIN

William M. 2 May 1834 Isabel BREMNER
William c.1836, D. 1903 M Jane SUTHERLAND

I have assumed the usual naming procedure for the first son (named after his paternal grandfather). From the IGI, which has a fairly comprehensive cover of Caithness, the only William to have a son William I could find is seen below. THIS IS NO PROOF!

William M. 20 Nov 1795 Elizabeth OAG
Margaret c.1796, D. 1885 ----
Donald C. 1797, D. 1876 ----
William C. 1798

The above dates are all I have. The marriage of William and Jane Sutherland does not say that William’s parents are deceased but I can find no death certs for them after the marriage. I also cannot find any other children of William and Isabel BREMNER through marriage or death certs.

One could hypothesize, did they die early only have one surviving child or emigrate with the family and William was the only one to return?

If you know of any other info on the above I would be most interested.

Look forward to hearing from you at vpoag@aol.com. (Was it you who got in touch direct as well?)

Regards
Val
