Hello. I'm Martin O'Prey from (and live in) Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland.

I know a fair deal about the O'Prey family history in Belfast with the McKenty family. Any one who has any queries, contact me and I will be willing to help.

Martin;

It was purely by accident that I stumbled across your note on the message board. My grandmother was an O'Prey from Belfast. Her father was Nicholas O'Prey. My mother's maiden name was McDade. She too was from Belfast. Her mother, Catherine O'Prey married John Mc Dade who, I believe was also from Belfast but, either he or his family were originally from Donegal.

Nicholas O'Prey had six children, that I am aware of. They were;
Catherine, Sarah, Christine, Ellen, Lucy and John. I know that Sarah, Christine and John emmigrated to the US.

As a matter of fact, I was in Belfast just this past October trying to find some of my roots. I spent some time in the General Register's Office trying to get birth certificates and also at the Linen Hall Library. I found Russell Street where my mother lived (she would never recognize it today) and the church in which she
was baptized, St. Malachy's. I wish I had more time to spend there but, unfortunately, I only had two days there and had to proceed on to meet a friend up in Carndonagh, Donegal. Altogether, I spent two weeks in Ireland and had a wonderful time.

Rumor has it that Nicholas O'Prey was a seaman of some kind but I have no details on that. My mother, Sarah McDade married Victor Godfrey, also from Belfast (they met and were married here in the US) so I have also been researching the Godfreys. My grandfather, Francis Hamilton Godfrey married Mary Bingham and they had 9 children, all of whom emmigrated to the US.

I would appreciate hearing any information you might have or know of on the O'Preys mentioned above or where I might be able to seek out further info.

Sincerely,

Victor F. Godfrey Sr.

I cannot give you an exact reply at the minuit, I'll talk to my dad about it. But my Grandfather and all his family were seamen. There are several O'Prey family's in Belfast, but my family is the only one's who worked at the docks in Belfast, so there's a possibility that I can give you more information. If there is any more, i'll email you. Thanks,

Máirtín Ó'Préith.

*O'Prey in Irish is spellt "Ó'Préith" & "Á Préith".

Noticed your message about the O'Prey's of Belfast. My Mother was an O'Prey born in the Docks area of Belfast. Her Father was named Henry O'Prey and his Father was also a
Henry Francis O'Prey married to a Rose Ann Connor around the 1859/60 their children were born between 1860 and 1880
and named, Patrick, Rose Ann, Catherine, Henry, Francis, William, James, Joseph, Robert and Elizabeth - do any of these names mean anything to you? James and Elizabeth eventually went to live in the USA. James's full name was, James Nicholas, do not know if this means anything. I think that my Great Grandfather Henry Francis may have had a brother called William as his name was on Elizabeth O'Prey's Baptisim Certificate. Let me know if any of the above rings a bell with you.

Martin,

I'm related to the O'prey familiy & here's what I know so far (not a fat lot)

My granfather
Thomas ORR born 13th August 1907 Balfour Street, Newtonards
Father Hugh ORR (Plasterer)
Mother Annie O'Prey

Annie O'Prey had a brother Jamie O'Prey of whom I have some photos not least one of him apparently in charge of Hankow Customs ?

I Believe (maybe urban myth) that James O'Prey (Jamie & Annie's) father was Mayor of Newtonards.

I also know that my Grandfathers (Thomas ORR) grandmother was Nancy Coats, of whom I also have a photo taken May 1878. We think that she was part of the Coats cotton family.

I know Hugh ORR & Annie O'Prey moved to America putting some if not all of their children in a Banados homes.

I have a newpaper cutting from the "Telegraph", though which one is not known, which tells of Mr James O'Prey of 26 Lorton Street, Off Dover Street, Belfast having a masonic collar that has been in his family for 200 years etc.

So if there's a connection please get in touch.

As a point of interest for the lady who has a Gallagher connection so do I, through to Sgt Henry Gallagher who served at Rorkes Drift during the Zulu war.

Many thanks

David .............

I am extremely interested in your response. Did your grandfather have a sister Eileen, and sister Nan and brother Hugh,? If so Annie was my grandfather's eldest sister. I have a lot more information if you would like it. Kind regards. Christine

Christine,

He certainly had a brother called Hugh, both were placed in Banados homes when the family finally emigrated to the US.

I have photographs of Annie O'Prey with brother Jamie & I think my mother has photographs of their parents.

I can tell you that my grandfather was born 12th August 1907 at Balfour Street, Newtonards. Father was Hugh Orr.

Hope that helps !
