O'Learys - Castlehaven, Co. Cork

Surnames: O'Leary, Leary
Looking for some missing O'Learys/Learys. Firstly two brothers called Arthur (b. April 1857) and William (b. October 1861) who were sons of Cornelius and Jane (Attridge) and were born in a townland called Bawnishall, Castlehaven which is outside Skibbereen in Co. Cork. Apparently they emigrated to Australia together and were never heard of again. It is said that one went mad on the trip. There was a story that the other might have ended up in the US with a slightly different name (like Olary!).

I am also looking for their first cousin. His name was Paddy O'Leary. I don't have a date of birth but I know that his brother was born in 1845 and that their parents were William Leary and Mary Sullivan from Bawnishall. It is said that Paddy went to the US and was never heard of again

Does any of this sound familiar to anybody

Wow, that is an amazing story! Sorry, it does not sound like any part of our O'Leary family. I hope that someone on this sight may be able to help.
Regards,
Maureen O'Leary

Thanks Maureen. Tough story but probably not too unusual in those days..... I have been talking to relatives in their 80's and picking up family tales before it is too late

I cant help you with O'Leary's, but I came across your message as I am researching Attridges who came to Australia from Castlehaven. My relative was an Alexander Attridge who migrated to Aust around 1850 aged about 20. His parents were Arthur and Margaret Attridge.

Do you have any further information about Jane Attridge or her family? She is possibly related to mine.

All I know about Jane Attridge was that she came from the townland of Forenaugtt in Castlehaven and it was said that she had Spanish blood (this came by word-of-mouth from elderly family members). Her oldest child was born in 1842 so she may have been a sibling of your Alexander. I am travelling at the moment but I thought that I had a copy of her baptism record. I'll check when I get home in a week's time.

In relation to her children , William and Arthur, I have found that there was a William and Arthur Leary on a ship called the Almora which landed in Queensland on 15 Jun 1883. This looks promising but I haven't got any further yet

I was looking for my Attridges and came across some pictures of graves at a small graveyard in Castlehaven (I visited this graveyard about 6 months ago - it is very remote, but stunningly beautiful).

There are O'Leary's here - including a William and an Arthur.

Yes I know that graveyard well. Lovely spot. William and Arthur were my grandfather and uncle. There is also a Thomas O'Leary that had a Jane Attridge in his family line. Any relation? I can check relationship if you wish - think she came from Farranconnor
