Dear O'Leary researchers.
Does anyone have any trace of O'Leary families in Plymouth, Devon ?? I am reaserching my wife Julie's family history, and am keen to learn about any ancestors living in the Plymouth area, particularly 1800s and 1900s.
The O'Learys were a big family, and we have quite alot of information on those that remain in the Devon area.

My O'Learys (Leary) migrated to Wales during or just after the famine and stayed there until 1890 when most of them came to America, but discovered that other members of the clan stayed in the UK or migrated down under. Recent DNA tests have discovered cousins in England, Wales & Ireland.

Wondering if your wife has a Richard Leary in her records.

Thanks.

The O'leary's I am researching came from Tremblez, Wexford, Ireland and moved to England from the famine. I believe the only O'leary from my family that left England was my grand mother Catherine O'leary who married Peter Osman from New York in 1924.

Jan - Not sure if we have been in contact before - I am also researching O Leary in Rathmore. Who are your ancestors? Tried to email as this is reply to you not the the original subject but what is posted on rootsweb doesnt' work and it bounced back.

John (son James and Hannah Welch/Walsh) b. ca 1799 and wife Abbie (Gobnait) Callahan b. ca 1800 5 or 6 children all born in Rathmore
family immigrated in stages between 1848-1853 to New Hampshire USA
also on same townland a Jeremiah Leary

Any connections? I am also in contact with other Leary/O Leary descendants from same small area.

Hi Robin, I was sent your request by my son - John O'Leary- who now lives in Sydney, Australia and picked it up on the net.
I am married to an O'Leary, christian name Desmond, who was born and brought up in Plymouth (dob 15.06.49). His father, John, came from Killarney and settled in the city in the 1940s where he established a building company. He and his wife Agnes (from County Tipperary) have four surviving children - three living in the area - and 13 grandchildren but as the family is relatively new to the city are probably not the branch of the O'Learys you are wishing to trace.
We are often asked if we are related to a family of publicans - a Joseph O'Leary ran the Navy pub on the Barbican for many years and his son, I believe also a Joseph, ran the Leaping Salmon pub in the Dartmoor village of Horrabridge for some time but we know of no connection with our family.
I am not sure if this is of any help. I am happy to supply you with more details of my husband's side of the family if you think they are relevant.
Out of interest - during a visit to Southern Ireland three years ago my son discovered O'Leary castle and our family paid a visit, learning a great deal about the role the O'Leary family played in that region where they were known as staunch opposers of English oppression.

Hello, Denise57
You must be referring to the town of Inchigeelagh, in the western end of County Cork, between Macroom and Ballingeary.
You most probably met with Joe Creedon, proprietor of Creedon's Hotel at the main intersection of town, and the historian of things O'Leary. One could not have asked for a better person to have around when in Inchigeelagh.

Patrick J.

Thank you for your message. HAving survived a busy Christmas holiday, we are only just startying to catch up with things, including email.
In terms of some of the names you have:
John O'LEARY: I have two. The first was b.1873 and the second b.1891. Whilst I have parents names for both, I have no details of spouses or children. Do you have the parents of John (the builder)

Joseph O'LEARY: I have one. He was b.1882 and had seven siblings, one of whom was John b.1873. Again, I have no spouse or family details for Joseph.

If you could send me any further names/dates for the above, I may be able to answer some of the questions that we both appear to have.
Regards
Robin
