My great-grandfather Leonard Nylen was from Varmland,b. 25 Feb 1865. He was born with last name Johansson, but changed to Nylen before moving to America in 1883. Also moving here were his mother Anna, sisters Kajsa, Anna, Kristina, and older brother Olof. By about 1890 they had moved to San Francisco. Some decesdants moved to Hawaii and some stayed in California moving to the San Joaquin valley area. Leonard married Amanda Ekström, originally of Södermanland. She was the daughter of a Baptist minister, Eric A. Ekström, b. 1838. Amanda left Sweden with brother Claes David in 1888. In 1893 her siblings Ingeborg and Josef arrived at Ellis island, but I have no knowledge of them after that.

Jacob Nylen, b. abt. 1856 in Sweden

Jacob Nylen, age 44 and born in Sweden, along with his wife Mathilda and their children Annie and Myrtle, are listed in the 1900 Census for Galveston, Texas.

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information that I found while researching the Hurricane of Galveston, Texas in 1900 and then searching thru the census records for that year. I noticed a few names that were from elsewhere and just wanted to share this information with the list incase someone lost track of an ancestor since they seem to have moved around a lot. The link for the census is listed below.
Joyce

http://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/tx/galveston/19...

Where in Sweden did your Nylen ancestors originate from?
I am searching for Nylens who came from the province of
Varmland. I have some information on Eric Nylen/Nyleen who was a minister and school professor. His sister, was
Kristina (my great-grandmother). She was born in 1841 and
died in 1928 at Frederickstad, Norway. My grandmother came to USA/Pope County, MN in 1887 where she later
married and raised her family. Any information appreciated.
Hugo Valdemar Nylen, born 16 December 1896 in Väse, Värmland, Sweden, left Hammarö Sweden in 1921 and came to the U.S. Relatives in Sweden want to contact his surviving family. It has been suggested that he may have been in Cadillac MI or Cook County (Chicago) Illinois. Any clues about him will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the response, Gretchen. My research into the Nylen family is very sparse at this time. I do not know where John E. Nylen was born and even when he married my great aunt Hannah Augustson. I believe they married in the USA, probably the upper pennisula of Michigan. My aunt lived in the UP with her brothers and sister prior to moving to CA with John Nylen. Hannah was from Karlskrona as were her siblings Charles, John, Peter, and Hilda.

John and Hannah did not have children.

Name Change

My wifes' grandparents (fathers parents) came from Sweden in the late 1800s. John Olson, her Grandfather, came over with his future wifes' family and settled in northern Minn. Because Olson was such a common name he change his name from John Olson to John Nylen. We believe my wifes' father, Johns' son, said the name Nylen was that of a minister. My wife is the last member of the family to have had the name Nylen.

I am doing research on Fredrich Nylen who lived in Manitoba Canada, but who came from Sweden, and changed his name from Anderson, as there were too many Anderson's. Any one doing research either on the same name, or on people who had to change their name, I would love to hear from you.
