Hi, are there any Nyahay's living in slovakia (originaly from Ruska Nova Ves) who are interested in telling me about our culture?
I'm guessing you don't spell the name the way I do, I believe in the old days in the USA it was pronounced NYE KI.

Maureen: Which Nyahay's are you related to? The West Moreland County PA's or the Yonker's NY? My Grandfather George (Juri) was the starting point of the PA group. According to SS death index, it looks like all Nyahay's that followed came from one of those two groups. Juri was born in what was Hungary in 1886. His parents (I'm told)were born in Bessarabia. I have an interseting family story as to where the Nyahay (Nyahi, Nyahai)name came from, which lends itself to more mystery. I have to run to work. Send me a note a engineerscotty@juno.com and we can continue the discussion. I would look forward to hearing from you.

Maureen: Are you closely related to the Edward Nyahay who was living in Florida 20 years ago, mothers name Anna Kraynak, who's family was from Ruska Nova Vesh near Vienna? (I hope your email address is still good so you receive this!) Email me at engineerscotty@juno.com and we can figure the Nyahay puzzle out.

I'm not too educated where family history is concerned but if it's really of interest, I can find more detailed information from Edward Nyahay or Frank Nyahay (Frank is my grandfather, Ed is my uncle). Frank is still living in Yonkers NY. I believe there were 4 brothers and a sister in the family (1 brother has passed away).

Any tidbits of info would be of help. I just lately understanding what "Ruthenien" means via a book I'm reading, and what life was like for Poles and Ruthens (the working class farmers)in the Austro-Hungarian empire in the years leading up to WWI right after the turn of the century(escape or get sucked into the infantry). I am still updating my immediate Nyahay tree and would very much like to hear from you. My grandfather's brothers and sisters must have settled around here someplace, going back wasn't an option.

Greg and Scot,

My mother did quite a bit of research on the Nyahay line before she died in 1988. I can send a GEDCOM file with all that I have. Please contact me.

I recently found out that my great-grandfather was born in Ruska Nova Ves, Slovakia. His name was Michael Nachaj. I have since contacted a relative in Slovakia who told me that when some of our family came to the states they changed the spelling of the Surname Nachaj to Nyahay. This man's name is Pavol Nachaj. If you have any questions I would be more than happy to answer them.
