I typed in my grandfather's name Taikina( later changed to Mattson) and this site came up. He was from Sakkijarvi and came to the US with his sister Anna Katri Kolhonen and her three children in 1911. He was born May 24, 1891.
I doubt whether this will help, but replied on the odd chance that it might

Hi, Don't know if you are still interested in the descendants of Sophia and Alexander, but myself and my brother are direct descendants through Oiva Nurmela, their son, and Lillian Nurmela, Oiva's wife.

Hi, Kimmo: I will get in touch with you when I've had a chance to go through my notes. From what you've said, it sounds like you are a descendant of Jaakko Joonaanp. NURMELA (1746-1807), while I am a descendant of his only brother, Pekka Joonaanp. NURMELA (1748-1813), via his son Juho. I will have to look up where you fit in but it must be from one of Maria Jaakont., Tuomas Jaakonp. or Valpuri Jaakont. as those are the only three of Jaako's children on whom I have any further information. I hope that you still check out this message board every now and then since it has been quite a while since you left your message.

My name is Kimmo Autio (born 1959) and I am a grandson of Anton Nurmela (1896) whose father was Eerik (or Eero as in some papers) Matinpoika Nurmela (b. 1867) and grandfather Matti Matinpoika Nurmela (b. 1834), who again seems to be the brother of Antti Nurmela. As Aleksander (Alex in USA?) Nurmela, who was married to Sofi (Sophie in USA?) Kosola, is my grandfathers uncle seems to verify that Matti Matinpoika Nurmela is Antti Nurmela´s brother. Besides that Oscar, married to Elna Kotka, is also uncle of my grandfather. But according to my information Matti Matinpoika´s father was Matti Tuomaanpoika Nurmela (b. 1807) and not Eerika Kaaponpoika Nurmela as it should have been if I got it right.

PS. Our summer cottage is near Russian border in Nurmela village in former Säkkijärvi county´s area, as 1/10 of Säkkijärvi was not taken by Russians.

PS 2. It was interesting to recognise that I have been quite near Polson Montana as we drove from San Fransisco to Seattle and from there to St. Louis, Missouri in 2001 (before 9/11).

Update: I have now established contact with the descendants of Alexander and Sophia NURMELA, thanks to a volunteer who found information in the California birth/marriage/death indexes. I have also discovered that my gf's younger brother Matti NURMELA in Montana, had also changed his name to NORVILLE by the time of the 1920 census. I am still looking for other NURMELA relatives and more information on Matti NORVILLE/NURMELA.

Descendants of Säkkijärvi NURMELAS

I would like to establish contact with any descendants of the Nurmela family of Säkkijärvi, Finland. My grandfather was Antti Nurmela who came to Canada in 1903 and settled in the Crowsnest Pass (SW Alberta). His younger brother, Matti, spent some years in the area of Polson, Montana.

The only other relatives I know about are brothers from the other side of the family, Alexander and Oscar, who lived in the SW corner of Wyoming.

Alex married Sophia KOSOLA in 1907 (Kemmerer, Wy.) and they had two children, Oiva A.A. and Elma Tekla. Oiva married Florence Katherine Piper in Berkeley (1938) and they had two children, born in 1940 and 1942 in Alameda: a son, W.A. and a daughter A.M. Mills. These two and their descendants are probably still living.

Elma married Clive Oates. An ancestral file was submitted to Family Search by Charles and Eileen BARTENAN, neither of whom are still at the addresses listed with the file.

Oscar's passage to Wyoming was paid by Alex in 1910. Oscar had two sons, Wesley O. who lived until 1967 and Walter A. who lived to 1929. There may be descendants.

There are some mysteries re Alex and Oscar and their Finnish wives, plus one child left in Finland.

Sophia, Alex, Oscar, Walter and Wesley are buried in the Rock Springs Cemetery, Sweetwater, Wy. Sophia died in 1951 in Ca., probably having gone to live with or near Oiva, (who died in 1990), as she outlived Alex by thirty years.

Alexander and Oscar were two of the ten children of MATTI NURMELA (1834-1917) and ANNA TAIKINA (1842-1920). The other children were Helena, Eerik, Maria, Matti, Valpuri, Tuomas, Anton, and Aksel, all of whom stayed in Finland as far as I know.

My own gf, was the son of Eerik Kaaponpoika Nurmela and Helena Viljontytär OLLIKKA. The only other surviving child I know about was the eldest, Eerik Eerikinpoika Nurmela (b. 1873) who married Amanda Aatamintytär KROUVI, (b. 1873) in 1900.
