This is my first cousin - his father and my father were brothers. I knew him very well, he even lived with us for a year or so before going into the army. I was about 10 years old at the time of his funeral. His casket was kept in the home of his mother for about 2 days and nights before his burial. He was a wonderful young man who left behind a wife who was expecting their first child. Loved him very much!
SGT Clarence E. Nunnery was my uncle, my dad's brother. The E in his name stands for Edward and he went by Eddie. We are from Sumter, South Carolina. Well, I'm actually from Manning, since my parents moved there from Sumter sometime after they were married. Eddie served in the 25th Infantry Divison in B company, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment. Ironically, I also served in the 25th ID in Hawaii which was my first duty station. I don't know much else about him other that his military record. Thanks for posting.

Jason Nunnery

Landon, If you want anyone outside of your immediate family to help you, you will need to provide those of us that do not know you or your family some more information.

What was your grandmothers date of birth and death? Where was she born. If she is still alive then call her and ask her the name of her parents.

Is Nunnery your grandmothers name when she was born or is your grandfathers last name.

The United States keeps their records private for 72 years so the last Census we have is 1930. If your grandparents were not born before 1930 only your family would have information on your immediate family. We do not post personal information on people that are still alive to protect their privacy.

I would suggest getting your grandparents if still alive to give you all the information that they can remember and if they are not alive then ask your father and mother for what they can remember about their grandparents. they might remember an age range and location where they lived when they died and when.

IF you can post this information for me I will try to help you with your Nunnery research. I did a quick search and nothing came up on your grandmother.

You can either post your information on this message board or your can send it to my personal email at reblady@flash.net. If you do a google search on my email or name you will see that I have posts on other surnames and the Nunnery name just to prove I am who I say I am.

Looking forward to hear from you with more information

Sharon M.
We are talking about the same book. It has no index and I will have to read several pages to find info. Send me an email to reblady with info and I can print it out and try to find info.

I had eye surgery for cataracts and having trouble reading. I bought reading glasses but still it is an adjust ment and my eyes are watering so much due to the surgery. I guess it will just take time

Mary Francis Nunnery did alot of research but would not send sections of her book to people to proof. Was so interested in getting the $50 the book cost. Some lines she might have documents to proof the linage but my line from Benton Co,. TN is a mess. I even wrote her to tell her that Rebecca Nunnery the mother of all the Benton Co, TN nunnery's gave sworn statements of when her husband died and where and info on her children. She refused to believe this information. She just wanted to believe Elmer an old man she talked to for years. I finally broke down and ordered the 1812 pension records from National Archives and all the mystery of Rebecca's husband came out. But for years many thought his name was John and that he died near Franklin TN while out hunting by indians. When he actually died in an unknown location on the way home from War. A death date was given which opened a can of worms because my great great grandfather was born after he died and WHO IS HIS DADDY???? Oh well, things happen. Maybe why all this info was swept under the rug for so many years.

Later

I would go to the 1930 census for Rafting creek. I went there but there are three districts to search. To get there do a search on Edward Nunnery (I woudl actually search on Catherine since she is younger and could have lived longer)and if no results come up (which I alread did and found nothing) scroll down to just below the 1930 census select the browse individual records. Select SC then Sumpter co then Rafting creek. It will take you to the individual census pages and scroll down the results to see if you can find a spelling close to Nunnery. If you find Catherine or Edward with incorrect spelling you can select the name that is wrong and add a corrections. Then you need to write down the incorrect spelling exactly and do another search with the wrong spelling or correct the search results area so that you get to the actual screen and make all the corrections for the data and print or link the page to your family.

I do this for my family but I am going to an appointment and do not have time to search all the enumeration districts for you.

Volunteers added the data for Ancestry from the census images and some had to guess at the correct spelling. It is not their families so it can be difficult where we see the name since we know what we are looking for. If you add the alternate name it gives others the ablity to search and find this data at a later date. Email me if you need any further help. I have a Nunnery book but there is no index and I will try to find something on your line when I get home later.

Sharon

I did a rough search and came up lucky for you. I found Anderson Nunnery born 1837 and Laura Johnson Nunnery living in Rafting Creek, Sumter Co, SC in 1870 and 1880. Their Son Edward Nunnery born 1875 and Catherine Deas Nunnery born 1896 are found on the 1920 census for rafting Creek. All listed are born in South Carolina.

I did not find them on the 1930 census to find your mothers father. I am guessing that their is a name spelling or the family moved from South Carolina. Since we are getting closer to your mother maybe you know where they moved.

Do you have an Ancestry.com subscription? If so there are some family trees listed with family members mentioned that you could use for clues for further research.

Please contact me for further assistance

Sharon reblady@flash.net

My name is Sarah Nunnery. On March 27th, 2000, I posted on Ancestry.com that I'm trying to locate my dads family. It's been 11 years, but I'm looking to start looking again. I'm 26 years old now and feel an emptiness because I don't know any of my dads family. If you are willing to help me and see if we are related in any way, I would very much appreciate it.

Here are the facts that I know.

My dads name is James Willis Nunnery.
His siblings:
* Donnie Nunnery
* Older sister
* Older brother
Parents:
* Mother: Sarah Ellen May
Born: 1935
Died: April 19th, 1969
* Father: William McKay Nunnery
(Not sure) We had someone tell us his middle name was McKoy, but my dad is certain it's McKay.

That's all I know. My dad has a mess load of stuff that he has gotten but it's all in storage. I'm starting fresh, so this is all I know. If you can help me in any way, I would be very greatful. I would love to have a family and for my dad to meet his family as well.

Thank you!!
Sarah

Please email me at burban1985@aol.com

Hi Lisa,

Is your offer to photo copy the 10 generation Nunnery book still good. If so, I would love to have a copy of it. It has been several years since I spoke with Kirby Carter and he never mentioned the book at that time. It must have been something that he obtained since I last spoke with him. Do you think Kirby would still have copies of the book? If you are still willing to copy the book, please let me know how much it will cost.

My Nunnery line comes thru Amos Nunnery and Susannah Horn(per Kirby Carter,) thru their daughter, Elizabeth J. Nunnery and William James Grice, thru their daughter Susannah Harrison Grice and her husband John S. Herring. I have a little info on this family and will be willing to share what I have.

Please contact me at:
bettyw41@yahoo.com

Betty Bishop Willoughby
11353 Highway 1064
Tickfaw, La 70466

Thanks much for any info you can share with me.

Betty Bishop Willoughby

Not to my knowledge. There are only three maked graves, although many un-marked including Mary Bullock (Nunnery) who was Troy Clark Nunnery's mother. Her death certificate (1925)says she is buried in the "Nunnery Graveyard near Autryville". His father Henry Nunnery died in 1900 which predates the NC death certificate requirement, but may be buried there as well. He could also be at Concord Church, there are several Henry Nunnery's there.
Do you have birth and death dates for Troy Clark Nunnery? I would appreciate that information.

Hi Sharon -
I haven't had a chance to do much with this in a while. Your last reply helped a good bit. I was able to track down a few more pieces of information. Thank you.

The Nunnery book that you mentioned - was it put together a few years ago by a lady and/or her husband in North Carolina? My mom's sister recevied a phone call from this person several years ago, but she never heard anything more from her. I was just wondering if your book was that same one.

Did you ever get a chance to take a look in it and find some info on my line of the Nunnery clan?

Thanks.
Rhonda

I am looking for information on the Nunnery-Deas clan.
My mother's father was C. Edward Nunnery. Her grandparents were Edward Nunnery and Christine(a) Deas. I can go back one more with Edward's parents being Anderson Nunnery and Laura Johnson and Christine's parents being Scriven Deas and Liza Tidwell (I've been told she was Cherokee). That's all I'm able to find as of right now.

Would love to get more if anyone has heard of this crew. Thanks.

Troy Clark Nunnery update. Born 1 Aug 1877; Died 24 Feb 1908. These dates were copied from the headstone many years ago by my sister. She does not remember the exact location of the cemetery. Her recollection is that it was near Autryville but in Cumberland County. It was located in a large field accessible via a 2 wheel rut dirt farm road. There were other Nunnerys buried there and, at that time, the cemetery was not being maintained with the gravesites overgrown and some of the stones toppled.

I believe Troy Clark Nunnery was born August, 1878. He married my grandmother, Nora Elizabeth Butler on April 17, 1907. He died about March, 1908, approximately 6 months prior to the birth of his only child, Troy Cleveland Nunnery(my father). Troy Cleveland was born September 8, 1908.

At the time of Troy Clark's death, he and Nora were living in the household of Henry and Mary. Soon after his death, Nora Elizabeth and Troy Cleveland moved back to her father's home in Sampson County.
