Jacob Snyder Nottingham would be my great, great, great, great grandfather. My family only knows of three children of him and Diana; Phineas, Salmon and Wellington. I am wondering if Simeon could be Salmon and William be Wellington? Salmon would fit in as being a biblical name as Phineas is.

Phineas had Roderick, who had Kenneth, who had Annette, who is my mother. Roderick's family lived in Michigan.
Sarah, daughter of Clarence, married her uncle Wellington.
Wellington and Sarah had Birdie, who is my great grandmother.
Birdie and Roderick had Kenneth, Helen and Mary.

I am trying to find more information on Diana Brant. Her parents listed in Abbotts cemetery listing was changed. Doe anyone have more information of her parents?
Betty,
My gr gr grandfather was Simeon Nottingham, older brother of Phineas. His son Salmon, my Grandmother Mabel Nottingham Conklin's father. I have a document that lists 11 children: Simeon 1813-1889,William Henry 1814-1889, Elmina 1816-?, Sally Ann (Sarah Ann?) 1817-1868, Seth 1819-?, Phineas 1823-1891, Prudence 1825-1826, Diana 1827-?, Calvin 1831-1841, Lucinda 1834-?, Jacob 1836-1913
Family legend says that Diana Brant was daughter of Joseph Brant, Mohawk chief who fought for the crown during the Revolutionary War. The dates, however do not line up, unless Diana was the daughter of Isaac Brant, Joseph's son, but one paper that my mother had lists Simeon Brant as her father. Do you have any information?
Penney Mapes Cook
To: Harold Vance Jr, I am Mary Schoolcraft and have been working with Nick Vance on grandma's geneology. Grandma's full name was Mary Susan Nottingham Hughey Vance.
She married George Washington Hughey in 1904 and had 4 children. She then married Sevitus Columus Vance and had 8 children. Grandma's parents were John Jackson Nottingham and Meda Phoebe Deal. When I have completed the history I will be sending Nick a copy and he in turn will make copies for his siblings. Thanks, by the way I am on your facebook. Correction it was 1904 she married Hughey! I am named after Grandma

Re: Method to sort a dead end

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

I do have a birth certificate for one of the known children of Joseph and Theresa, confirms parents as Joseph Richard Nottingham and Theresa. I may be missing the point, but I do not see how that helps find the parents of Joseph Richard Nottingham.

I know Joseph and Theresa are the correct names and people. The census records, I have so far only been able to locate them in 1891 and 1901, hence Josephs father is not shown, didn't expect him to be.

Joseph noted as being born - St John's Wood, London, England - c.1861

So I know Joseph and Theresa are the correct people. I can trace Theresa back, but Joseph is the issue.

As noted before I can only find one marriage certificate that matches the couple and one birth certificate, that is within a wide date range. But they do not tie together.

At present I am ignoring both records and I am attempting to trace him back further in the census records in the hope that will help to narrow it down. If I get time, will also see if I can find anything in newspapers and parish records.

Regards,
Nick

When you searched for Joseph Richard and Theresa in the census, what did you find?

Instead of getting a marriage certificate that may not be for the right couple, you should have gotten the birth certificate of one of their known (emphasis on known) children. That would give you the parents' names and father's occupation.

HH

Hi All,

I am having an issue with two people in my tree and would like some advice on how to proceed. I have the following two individuals.

1. Joseph Richard Nottingham
2. Theresa Louise Bromley, b. 1862, Redditch, Worcestershire

I am 100% sure they are correct, they are married. I am trying to trace them back further but thats where the problems come in. Other members of the family have traced them back all with different lineages and I want to be 100% sure I have the correct ones.

This is what I have done, but need advice.

------------
1. Searched for a marriage between the above between 1860 and 1890. They had a son, well two, in 1880s/90s. Anyway I can find only one marriage between any such individuals in that range. I assume that is the correct one and order a marriage certificate. The certificate shows Josephs father as:
------------
Richard Nottingham, Vet. Surgeon.
--------------
2. I search for Joseph's birth and find only one candidate. I order the birth certificate and find father noted as Joseph Nottingham, Gen Labourer.
---------------
The fathers are not the same person, either by name or family when you trace them. So the question is What/How do I solve this?
---------------
My instinct says the marriage certificate is correct, but then where is his birth?
--------------
I would appreciate any advice?
---------------
Regards,
Nick

Does anyone have information on Mary Nottingham who married Edward Belote? My ancestor Edward Billiter supposedly married Mary Nottingham in Dorchester Co. MD in 1760. I found a Mary Nottingham who married Edward Belote in 1760 in Northampton Co. VA. The Billiter name has been found in old records as Beloter, so this might be a variant spelling of the name.

Hello Cousins and other researchers,
I have been trying to research this for years and found the following regarding Eleanor and John Nottingham. It appears the correct last name is Mottingham. In the Sussex archaeologic record from 1872 page 110 it gives a family tree this family tree states the following: Eleanor daur. And heir of John Mottingham, of Higham Court in Milsted, co. Kent . This also states that Symon Cheyney her husband was the owner of Crale and Milsted and he was one of the gentry of Sussex 1434.
http://books.google.com/books?id=N0MJAAAAIAAJ&pg=RA1-PA1...=
Hope this helps.
Sean Chaney
As documented in hundreds of family trees, John Nottingham is incorrectly shown as the son of the 1st. Earl of Nottingham, 4th Lord of Mowbray. If my research is correct, as is found in several English historical documents, John Nottingham was the son of Robert de Nottingham, having a daughter, Eleanor Nottingham married to Simon Cheney. As much as I would like to believe in the lineage shown in many trees, I believe this evidence I have provided to be more accurate. I would be happy if someone could prove me wrong and provide valid information to support John Nottingham having been a son of the 1st. Earl of Nottingham. The reference to 'John Nottingham as the son of Robert de Nottingham, with a daughter, his sole heir, married to Simon Cheney, of Crall, in Sussex, is found in the 'Parishes-Sittingborne' section of this British history online site.

The excerpt from this site:

BAYFORD-CASTLE, where his ancestors had resided for several generations. Robert de Nottingham lived here in the reign of king Edward I. and dates several of his deeds apud castellum suum de Bayford, apud Goodneston. Robert de Nottingham, his successor, who became possessed of the manor of Goodneston as beforementioned, was sheriff in the 48th year of king Edward III. and kept his shrievalty at Bayford, bearing for his arms, Paly, wavy of two pieces, gules and argent, in which year he died, and was found by the inquisition to die possessed of lands at Sharsted, Pedding in Tenham, Newland, La Hirst, Higham in Milsted, Bixle, now called Bix, in Tong, and lastly, Goodneston, with Bayford, in Sittingborne; all which descended to his only son John Nottingham, who died without issue male, leaving Eleanor his daughter his sole heir, who marrying Simon Cheney, of Crall, in Sussex, second son of Sir Richard Cheney, of Shurland, he became, in her right, entitled to it. His grandson Humphry Cheney alienated both Goodneston and Bayford, at the latter end of king Henry VI.'s reign, to Mr. Richard Lovelace, of Queenhyth, in London.

From: 'Parishes: Sittingborne', The History and Topographical Survey of the County of Kent: Volume 6 (1798), pp. 150-163.

Cut and paste link:

http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=62956

Additionally in 'The Domesday Book' showing 'Sussex Domesday Tenants', 'The Cheyneys of East Sussex', it provides evidence to support Simon Cheney being married to Eleanor Nottingham, daughter of John Nottingham, on page 48.

Cut and paste link:

http://www.tim.ukpub.net/Genealogy/articles/SsxArcCol_v65_pp...

see pages 47-51

Children of Andrew Jackson Nottingham and Hannah Bragg, Braxton County, WV

Looking for verification that Laura Alice Nottingham, born about 1867, third wife of Nathaniel Robert Meadows, was a daughter of Andrew Jackson Nottingham (born about 24 April 1826) of Braxton County, VA/WV.

Based on the information I have been able to dig up, it looks like Laura Alice Nottingham was possibly a daughter of Hannah Bragg Gill and Andrew Jackson Nottingham, Sr. (not Floyd Nottingham as noted on her Certificate of Death). The only Floyd Nottingham that shows up in the records of the time is William Floyd Nottingham, born about 1862, a son of Andrew Jackson Nottingham, Sr. and his first wife wife, Cynthia Hamrick. This Floyd Nottingham would have been a half-brother of Laura A. Nottingham.

Laura Alice Nottingham had a brother Andrew Jackson Nottingham born about 1868/69 whose mother was Hannah Bragg.

Any help appreciated.

Arley Meadows
ameadows@zoominternet.net

Philip Nottingham of St. Mary's County, Maryland & Washington/Nelson County, Kentucky

Philip Nottingham was married to Elender, not Manerva. The "Manerva Nottingham" listed in the household of Stephen Nottingham (Philip's son) is in fact his daughter, not his widowed mother. Stephen's daughter was 16, but it looks like 86 on the 1850 census. Because of this, some have shown Philip Nottingham's wife as Manerva, born 1764 in Kentucky. This is totally incorrect.

Philip & Elender Nottingham moved to Washington County, Kentucky about 1792. They had six childen:

1) Ignatius Nottingham m. Mary Birns, 1805.
2) Ann (Adria) Julia Attaway Nottingham m. William McAdams, 1809.
3) Joseph Nottingham m. ????
4) Elizabeth Nottingham m. Samuel McAdams, Jr., 1810.
5) Benedict Nottingham m. Mary (-------)
6) Stephen Nottingham m. Nancy Ann Basham, abt. 1821.

Elender Nottingham signed consent notes for Ignatius, Adria/Ann, & Elizabeth/Eliza Nottingham to marry.

The last mention I have of Elender Nottingham is the marriage affidavit of her daughter, Elizabeth who married Samuel McAdams, Jr. on May 25, 1810 in Harrison County, Indiana. The marriage affidavit shows Elizabeth's mother as, "Elender Notingim."

Jesse Stamper
Philip NOTTINGHAM and his wife, Elender had six children:

1) Ignatius NOTTINGHAM m. Mary BIRNS, 1805.
2) Ann (Adria) Julia NOTTINGHAM m. William MCADAMS, 1809.
3) Joseph NOTTINGHAM m. ????
4) Elizabeth NOTTINGHAM m. Samuel MCADAMS, Jr., 1810.
5) Benedict NOTTINGHAM m. Mary (-------)
6) Stephen NOTTINGHAM m. Nancy Ann BASHAM, abt. 1822.

Phillip NOTTINGHAM'S wife has been incorrectly shown by some as Manerva/Minerva/Menerva. This was apparently based on a census error.

The marriage records of Ignatius, Adria/Ann, and Elizabeth/Eliza NOTTINGHAM all list "Elender NOTTINGHAM" as their mother. The will of Bennet NOTTINGHAM (1801), Philip's brother, names all of Philip's six children. Philip was a son of Athanasius NOTTINGHAM. Philip NOTTINGHAM moved from St. Mary's County, Maryland to Washington County, Kentucky in about 1792. Philip seems to have died there sometime prior to 1801. Several of Philip & Elender's children married in Nelson County, Kentucky. Some of them moved to Breckinridge County, Kentucky.

Philip's widow, Elender NOTTINGHAM moved to Harrison County, Indiana with her daughter (Elizabeth) and future son-in-law, Samuel MCADAMS, Jr. about 1810. I don't know when she died.

Jesse Stamper

Philip Nottingham is my ancestor. He was married to Elender (last name unknown, although "possibly" Attaway) in St. Mary's County, Maryland at an unknown date. The Manerva Nottingham mentioned in the 1850 census was Stephen Nottingham's daughter Manerva (age 16, not 86; born KY; married Jesse Stanley). This error has been repeated by many others, but has no foundation in fact. The marriage bonds of three of Philip's children (Ignatius, Ann/Adria, Elizabeth) all refer to their mother as Elender Nottingham.

I'm descended from Philip and Elender's daughter, Elizabeth Nottingham who married Samuel McAdams, Jr. (died 1864 per will) in Harrison County, Indiana in 1810. Elizabeth mother, Elender Nottingham gave her permission for the marriage as Elizabeth was underage.

Philip Nottingham was the son of Athanasius Nottingham and is so alluded to in his will. Philip's brother, Bennett Nottingham also came with Philip to Washington County, KY in the early 1790s. Bennett's will mentions Philip's six children.

Jesse Stamper

Philip Nottingham, son of Anthanasius Nottingham of St. Mary's County, Maryland.

Searching for information concerning Philip Nottingham of St. Mary's County, Maryland who later moved to the Washington/Nelson Co., KY area about 1792.

Philip Nottingham is said to have been born about 1749 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. The 1749 birth date apparently stems from the fact that when Anthanasius Nottingham, Philip's father, wrote his will in 1767, Philip was mentioned first, probably indicating that Philip was the eldest child.

Anthanasius had apparently not reached his twentieth birthday by the time his father, Stephen Nottingham, wrote his will in 1745. Thus Anthanasius is thought to have been born about 1725 or slightly after.

In the will, Anthanasius bequeaths his plantation called "Nivitts St. Ann" to his son Philip. Assuming Philip was at least eighteen (18) years old at the time Anthanasius wrote his will (1767), this would place his birth about 1749 or possibly before.

Anthanasius's nine other children: Basil, Catherine, Eleanor, Bennett, Barbary, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Ann, and Enoch Nottingham were apparently all underage (?) since Anthanasius requested that his brother, Matthias Nottingham "have care" of them. Thus it appears Philip Nottingham was the eldest son of Anthanasius Nottingham.

I have read that some of St. Mary's County (SMC) early records were destroyed in a courthouse fire possibly explaining why little is apparently known of Philip Nottingham while he resided in Maryland.

Philip Nottingham signed an oath of allegiance to the state of Maryland in 1777. John Basil Nottingham and Benj. Nottingham (?) were also signers. A typical example of the oath Philip signed is below:

"I do swear, that I do not hold myself Bound to yield any Alegiance or Obedience to the King of Great Britain his heirs or successors, and that I will be true and faithful the the State of Maryland, and will, to the utmost of my Power, support, maintain, and defend the freedom and independence thereof, and the Government as now Established, against all open Enemies, and Secret and traiterous Conspiracies, and will use my utmost Endeavours to disclose and make known to the Governer, and or some one of the binations, against this State or the Government therof, which may come to my knowledge. So help me God."

Philip Nottingham was married to Elender (---------) sometime prior to the birth of Ignatius Nottingham (born about 1784?). This is evident by Ignatius' marriage bond in Nelson County, Kentucky which clearly identifies his mother as "Elender Nottingham."

Some have shown Philip's wife as Manerva/Minerva/Menerva Nottingham born 1764 in Kentucky. This error was caused by a misreading of the 1850 census regarding the household of Stephen Nottingham (Philip's son). Included in Stephen's household was one "Manerva Nottingham." On the census page, Manerva's age is somewhat difficult to read. At a glance, it looks like 86, but it is in fact 16! Additional research shows this "Manerva Nottingham" was actually Stephen's daughter, Manerva (born 1833 in KY) who married Jesse Stanley in 1854.

Philip Nottingham was enumerated in the 1790 Maryland census.

1790 St. Mary's County, Maryland
Philip Nottingham: 1 free white male [over 16, presumably himself], 1 free white male [under 16, presumably Ignatius Nottingham (son)], 2 free white females [presumably Elender Nottingham (wife) and Ann Julia Attaway Nottingham (daughter)], and 3 slaves.

Philip Nottingham and family moved to Washington County, Kentucky about 1792. Some of Philip's siblings and their spouses also came to Kentucky about this same time. Assumingly, before Philip left Maryland, he sold his plantation called "Nevits St. Ann." Philip had received this "plantation" from his father, Anthanasius Nottingham in 1767, who had in turn received it from his father, Stephen Nottingham in 1745.

Philip died in Washington County, Kentucky sometime prior to 1801. Philip Nottingham and his wife, Elender had at least six (6) children:

1) Ignatius Nottingham (c.1784?-aft.1805) married Mary Birns(?), 1805, Nelson County, Kentucky.
2) Ann (Adria) Julia Attaway Nottingham (c.1789-1855) married William McAdams (c.1788-bef.1850), 1809, Nelson County, Kentucky.
3) Joseph Nottingham (c.1791/2-aft.1801) married ????
4) Elizabeth Nottingham (c.1794-aft.1870) married Samuel McAdams, Jr. (c.1790-1864), 1810, Harrison County, Indiana.
5) Benedict Nottingham (c.1796?-aft.1850) married Mary (---------).
6) Stephen Nottingham (c.1797-1866) married Nancy Basham, abt. 1821.

There may have been other children, but these are the only children I have documentation for.

In 1801, Bennet Nottingham, Philip's brother, made his will. In this will, Bennet names six (6) children of Philip Nottingham, dec'd: "The balance of the money is devised to the heirs of Philip Nottingham (deceased), to wit. Ignatius Nottingham, Ann Attaway Nottingham, Joseph Nottingham, Elizabeth Nottingham, Benedict Nottinghan and Stephen Nottingham. If any of them die before they come of age, the others are to inherit their share. They are to be paid as they come of age."

According to Bennet's will, all of Philip's six children had not yet "come of age." I have listed Stephen Nottingham as Philip and Elender's youngest child because Bennet Nottingham appears to have named Philip's children in order of birth, although census records may possibly suggest Benedict was the youngest.

I haven't found any additional information for Ignatius Nottingham and his wife Mary Birns(?).

I haven't found any mention of Philip's son, Joseph Nottingham after 1801. Because his uncle, Bennet Nottingham, listed him (Joseph) between Ignatius and Ann, I assume Joseph was born about 1791/2, either in Maryland or Kentucky.

There was also an "Altivia Nottingham" who married "Henry Quiggins" in Nelson County, Kentucky in 1818. I haven't found any additional information concerning Henry or Altivia.

A Phillip Nottingham shows up in census records for Breckinridge and Meade Co., KY in 1850 and 1860. This Philip was born sometime between 1799 and 1804 according to census records. He was married to Keziah/Kesiah. I don't know how he fits into the Nottingham family.

Philip's son, Benedict Nottingham married a woman named Mary and lived in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. Ann Julia Attaway Nottingham married William McAdams and also lived in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. Stephen Nottingham lived in that county until moving to Illinois; his sister, Elizabeth Nottingham moved to Harrison Co., Indiana in 1810.

The early records for Washington/Nelson Co., KY are both extant, and no doubt contain additional records concerning Philip and his wife, Elender. Guardianship and probate records in either county will provide much more information if someone will check these sources. I personally don't have any Nottingham documents from either of these counties.

The following record was found on the internet:

Guardian Accounts of Washington County, KY: Ann Julia Attaway Nottingham - Orphan,

State of Kentucky, Washington County, November County Court 1807.

Ann Julia Attaway Nottingham an infant orphan of Philip Nottingham deceased came into court and made choice of Henry Lucas as her guardian. Whereupon the said Henry Lucas together with John Newton his security executed and acknowledged bond in the penalty of two hundred pounds conditioned to secure the said orphans estate. Teste: John Reed, Clerk

I John Reed clerk of Washington County, aforesaid, do hereby certify that the above is truly transcribed from the records in my office. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of my said county this sixth day of November A.D. 1807. And of the commonwealth the sixteenth. John Reed. John J. Ray presiding Justice.

Ann Julia Attaway Nottingham is the eldest (known) daughter of Philip and Elender. Her marriage bond identifies her as "Adria Nottingham," daughter of "Elinder Nottingham." The name "Adria" appears to have been only a nickname; she is listed as "Ann McAdams" in the 1850 census. Ann also signed as a witness on the marriage bond of her brother (Ignatius Nottingham), she signed her name as "Anguliatiway Nottingham."

Due to Ann's middle name of "Attaway," it has been suggested that it could be a family name, possibly Elender's side of the family.

I am descended from Philip and Elender's daughter, Elizabeth who married Samuel McAdams (Jr.). It appears Elender Nottingham accompanied Samuel McAdams (Jr.) to Harrison County, Indiana in 1810, because Elender gave her consent for Samuel to marry her daughter (Elizabeth Nottingham) in Harrison County in 1810. I will post their marriage record below:

Harrison County, Indiana Marriage Record:
Man's Name: Saml. McAdams
Woman's Name: Eliza Notingim
Marriage Remark(s): Consent being given by Elender Notingim, her mother.
Date: May 25, 1810.
Marriage Return: Joined together in marriage, Samuel McAdams & Eliza Notingim on May 25? (difficult to read), 1810, by James Lang.
Source: Harrison Co., IN Marriage Bk. 1, p. 3, marriage #21.

Samuel McAdams, Jr. and Elizabeth Nottingham had at least five (5) children:

1) Mary Ann McAdams married Isaac Mowrer. (my ancestors)
2) William McAdams married Cinderella Dennison.
3) Stephen McAdams married Sarah French.
4) John McAdams married a) Elizabeth Amy; b) Martha Ann Curts.
5) Lucinda McAdams.

I don't know if Elender stayed in Harrison County, Indiana or moved back to Kentucky with her other children. Technically, I can't be certain whether she actually came to Harrison County. Elizabeth Nottingham's marriage affidavit only mentions she had her mother's "consent" to marry Samuel McAdams. Elender did not sign the marriage affidavit. I have not checked the 1810, 20, 30, etc. censuses to see if Samuel McAdams (Jr.) is enumerated with a woman old enough to be Elender.

If anyone has any additional information on Philip and Elender Nottingham, please contact me.

Jesse Stamper
Leecorydon(at)juno.com

Wow -- two years ago I followed ONE "false path to royalty" (unwittingly), only to find it disproven.
One year ago, or so, I found the Cheney/ Cheyney path back to royalty/ long ago. I was retracing it to find my connection with my stepdaughter -- I thought we were 25th cousins or so -- and came across this missing link.
I haven't thought to look to see John Mottingham's ancestry if there's any record of it. Another adventure.
Thanks for your research on this!

I saw of your interest in the Nottingham Family from Hessay that you posted in 1999, and hope that you are still working on this. I believe that my daughter, on her mother's side, is descended from George Nottingham (1580-1652) of Hessay, son of John Nottingham (d.1589) Lord of the Manor of Hessay, and his wife, Effam (died in 1597 apparently leaving a Will, which I have not seen). Do you have any information on them? Vincent Tickner
