William, Albert F and Joseph Notine

I am retracing my records to see what I have found and what I am missing. If you visit the Notini webpage, you will see that there is a very good chance that Notine is, in fact, Notini. This is what I have so far on the above mentioned names:

1970 census Hartford, CT, Ward 4

William Notine, 29 born in Italy
Ellen, 24, born in Connecticut
Almira, 5, daughter born in Connecticut
Albert, 2, son born in Connecticut
Joseph, 24, born in Italy

1900 census, St Edwards Street, Brooklyn, NY Ward 11

Albert F. Notine, b Apr 1867with father from Italy and mother from Connecticut

wife - Mary A., b. July 1874 (parents both English) married in about 1895
Robert W. Notine, b. 1896 in NY
May b. 1899 in NY

The Albert F. Notine matches the son of William Notine listed above.

I have since been searching for Joseph Notine listed in the 1870 census with William Notine. I notice that there are records on the community boards that list a Guglielmo, Frank, John, Lodevico and Joseph Notine(i) as a family group with Luigi as their father from Lucca, Italy. I can't seem to find the for sure connection though. There are Josephs that may match this information, but the age is off. I have found a Joseph through census files from 1910 and 1920, but his age is off by 10 years if we are going to try to match him to the one living with William in 1870. There is, of course, a good chance that the dates or ages have been incorrectly reported on the forms. I noticed when searching for Joseph that he listed his age and date of arrival differently on each of the census records. The exact details didn't seem too important to him.

Hello Patricia,

What are your parents names? I can't believe none of my other research friends haven't written a response to this post yet :). We tend to write a lot, and repeat a lot. You have probably been contacted by some of these people. Just recently we found that we were in fact "from Italy" instead of French Canadian. If I remember correctly, that was the family story that was always told. Many people didn't know that it was a story though until just recently. We have found that most, if not all, Notines in the USA are related through one particular branch. Please let me know more and I will share with you what we know. How long ago did your father come over from Italy? Thanks for sharing any information.

Sincerely,
Lori Gallagher (married into the Notines)

Hi again,

Have you browsed through the Notini board here? If I remember correctly, plastering was something that was common in our families. I will have to check and see what I have in my files regarding someone who's name might be Julius...I don't see anyone that matches what you are saying, but there is a lot of missing information on some of the brothers. Again, check out the Notini board. It would be interesting reading at least for you :).

Sincerely,
Lori
Hi Patricia, Would love to know more about your father & grandparents. My GGF was Guiglielmo NOTINI, who used to name William NOTINE until his death in 1909. His son, my grandfather, was Albert NOTINE, born in Hartford, MA in 1867, both came to NYC aprox 1880. There are NOTINEs in NYC metro area and NOTINIs in Lowell, MA area. Are you from either of those?
My e-mail<sterlingplace@worldnet.att.net>

Hello, My name is Shannon Notine. You should also check the name Notini. Albert Notini, changed his name to Notine back in the early 1900's. If you check the message board under Notini you will find some conversation between a Grace Knoble and myself regarding this.....Good luck

Notines in the Ancestry.com paid places

Just thought I would list some names I found for the Notines through ancestry.com's paid locations:

There were four brothers in Hartford, CT in 1889, 1890 and 1891 who were all barbers. Their names were:
Anthony
John
Joseph
Ludwig

There was a Gertrude Notine who married M. Timothy Murphy in 1916 and had a son in 1917. This was in Rhode Island.

There was a Frank Notine in the Brooklyn directory of 1888.

Finally, there was a Guiseppe Notine who married an Emma Jansen in 1879 as well as a Florence Notine who married Leon Pillion in 1914.

Any matches anywhere?

Hi there!

I finally decided to stop by over here. I will keep my eyes open for any Notines that moved to the England area. Maybe some other "Notinis" moved to England when the ones I know of here in the US moved to the US.

Lori

As far as I know, none of the Notines went to London, but there are a few that I don't know about. For example, I have no information on Fred Notine (born in 1878. I do know that one of the Notini brothers from Connecticut moved back to Italy around the turn of the century, so it is possible to go to other countries from the US. I would also check the name Nodine since that was more common in the Northern European areas it seems. Check back here and the Notini boards every once and a while as I will give periodic updates on information I find.

Hi again,
I am not sure if I mentioned before, but the Notinis that came over from Italy (so we think at least) were all craftsmen (sculptors and such). We haven't traced back to Europe yet but we do have record that they were born in Italy. I will keep in mind to look up ship records from England as well as Italy when I finally get around to that. They could have moved to England first before coming to the US.

Lori

Grace: I really don't have any more information other than what I had written. My father was born in NYC - had 5 sisters - 1 brother who died when he was a baby. Grandfather was Julius Notini from either Milan or Genoa. He did decorative plastering - the kinds of statues and plaques that you see on old New York buildings. I do know that my grandparents came from Italy and that they were from Italian background. That's about all I know.

Regards/

My father came here from Italy when he was a year old. His parents were both Italian. Some say the name was Notini and that the Notine came from someone coming from Alsase Lorraine. I did not know my grandfather who did work in NY and did do decorative sculpture work. I often get calls from people with the name of Notine but they have all been French Canadian. My father had only sisters. I believe my grandparents came from Milan and Genoa - don't know which came from where. Just thought I'd let you know.
Hi Lori! From what I've read, there was a large contingent of Italian craftsmen in London in the 1700s and 1800s, surprisingly enough. They created beautiful objects d'arte for the wealthy, stayed and one assumes, married English women. I'll try Nodine but as I know so little, it will be difficult to pin point specific individuals.
That's what makes genealogy so interesting, n'est pas?
vi p
