Colin, I've been working on the East Anglian NORTHROP family (my wife's grandmother was a NORTHROP) for many years, and it sounds as though we may have information to share - but I don't know how to access your public tree at Ancestry. Could you contact me off list at rootsweb.only@virgin.net?
Regards
Don

Hi Cindy,
While Amanda Northrop is not in my line of Northrups, I can tell you that the COLE name may have been COOLE or COOL. I am doing research in that part of New York for a client and one of their ancestors married into the COOLE line in Albany County and migrated to Cayuga, Onondaga and Oswego Counties in central New York. The original COOLE was of Dutch stock and saw many records where the spelling was changed to COLE.

I hope this helps you find James COLE who married Amanda Northrop.

Novtrux --> Northrop?

I have a 3x gr-grandmother from Germany whose last name appears in documents as both NORTHOP (or Northrup) and NOVTRUX. The data in all documents match, so I am certain it is the same lady, but I can not work out why she has 2 maiden names? Is it possible that Northrop is an Americanized version of Novtrux? Or that Novtrux somehow translates to Northrup?

Other specs for this lady are:
Maria A. Northrop (or Novtrux), b. Oct 1823 in Germany; d. Jun 1893 in Louisiana; m. Frederick Robbert (1823 Germany-1898 Louisiana); had 6 children

If anyone has any thoughts on why the name change (Novtrux appears on earlier documents, Northrop on later), I would be very grateful.
This lady was my Mum. She was always known as Northrop before her marriage to my Dad. Her birth certificate though has the father missing and she has been registered by my Grandmother Lily who was then the widow of Mr Brown. She is therefore registered as a Brown. The whole situation is a puzzle to me. It could be that as my Grandmother registered the birth Mum couldn't have the name of Northrop on her birth certificate as they didn't marry until 1926. Does anyone have any information that they can share with me?
Thanks Sarah

Hi Clyde,
I hope this finds its way to you. It's been a long time since I worked on this history. I have since found that Anna Maria McCoy married Philo A Northrop in about 1848 and had two sons, Pierpont and Courtland (Cortland?) Pierpont N married a Mary MacDonald but they later divorced. No children. Cortand must also have married because his son, William b. 1876, was living with him and Anna Maria (also Pierpont) in NYC about 1900. I am most interested in finding out what may have happened to William Northrop and if he married and had children? I can't find anything re Wm nor his father Cortland after about the 1910 census. Any clues? Best regards, Tom Chesrown

Hi,
I was in touch some years ago with Clyde Northrop, who also may have had this book on your family. I was seeking info on Dr. Philo Northrop who married Anna Maria McCoy in Rochester, NY, in the mid/late 1840's. They had two boys, Pierpont Northrop and Cortland Northrop. Cortland Northrop had a son, William, who was born in 1876. Philo and Anna Maria separated/ divorced and she moved to NYC in the 1870's. She remarried one James Austin. Her Northrop sons continued to live in NY. Anna Maria died in about 1909 and son, Pierpont in about 1913. Any idea what became of Cortland or William Northrop or their father Philo?

Hi. I believe that Joseph Northrop born 1637 was a brother to my 7 great grandfather James Northrop born 1635. Do you know where Joseph was born so I can confirm my suspicion.
Thanks Michael Northrop

Sorry can't help. The only James Northrop's I know are one very distance relative born in 1635 and my son who was born in the 1980's. However if you trace any of the family back to Cambridge England do get in touch so we can compare notes as my husbands family of Northrop's seems to have come from there. Good luck!

Hello Sarah,
I was fascinated to read your message, for I think that my wife may be related to some of the people you discuss - and thus very probably to you, But I am rushing ahead too fast.
According to our research, for what it's worth, Stanley's marriage to Maude Emma Challis was registered 4th Qtr 1903 at W. Ham, Vol 4a, Page 641, I believe I have found three children of this marriage:
1. Stanley William J. Northrop, birth registered 1st Qtr 1905 at W. Ham, Vol 4a, Page 505. Nothing more known.
2. Winifred C. Northrop, birth registered 1st Qtr 1912 at Epping, Vol 4a, Page 999 - whose marriage to Percy E. Read was registered 4th Qtr 1933 at W. Ham, Vol 4a, Page 731 - no children found.
3. A son Northrop, forename not recorded, birth registered 2nd Qtr 1915 at Pancras, Vol 1b, Page 58 - nothing more known
Stanley's marriage to second wife Lily S.Brown (born Sarah Lily Silvey) was registered 2nd Qtr 1926 at Epping, Vol 4a, Page 926; her birth had been registered 3rd Qtr 1897 at St. Saviour, Vol 1d, Page 50, and her marriage to Joseph W Brown was registered 4th Qtr 1915 at W.Ham, Vol 4a, Page 647.
I have found no trace of when Stanley's marriage to Maude occurred, nor of what happened to Joseph Brown, but it seems that Joseph & Lily/Sarah Silvey had a son, Stanley J F K Brown, birth registered 3rd Qtr 1917 at Epping, Vol 4a, Page 681.
So, moving on, Children of Stanley and Lily:
4. A possible son: Ernest W. R. Northrop (mother's maiden name = Silvey), birth registered 4th Qtr 1919 at Epping, Vol 4a, Page 10_8
5. A possible daughter: Eileen F. L. Northrop (mother's maiden name = Brown), birth registered 2nd Qtr 1921 at Epping, Vol 4a, Page 920; nothing further found.
6. A probable son, Ronald D. Northrop (mother's maiden name = Silvey), birth registered 4th Qtr 1924 at Epping, Vol 4a, Page 707; The death of a Ronald Dennis Northrop was registered in 1993 at Thanet, Kent, no marriage found.
7. A probable son, Geoffrey A. Northrop, (mother's maiden name = Silvey), birth registered 2nd Qtr 1927 at Dunmow, Vol 4a, Page 1421; no marriage or death found.
So far I haven't found the registration of your mother Elsie's birth on 20th August 1922.
Has Barnardo's been able to help? Were any of the family shipped out to Canada or Australia, as happened to so many thousands?
Hoping very much to hear from you, I'm at rootsweb(full stop)only atte virgin(dotty)net
Don

Re: Ruth Northrup/Northrup b. 1766-1777, Dutchess Co., NY

Thank you for giving your consideration to my query.

According to the book The Northrup-Northrop genealogy: record of the known descendants of Joseph Northrup…by A. Judd Northrup, New York: Grafton Press, 1908, the father Enos “lived in Dutchess Co., N. Y. ; m [spouse not identified], in Mohawk Valley, N. Y.”, and the brothers Enos, Cornelius and Thomas were among the seven, or perhaps more, children of Enos Northrup, who was born (date not known) and died 1812. See page 385, “Unconnected Families.”
According to the History of Ingham and Eaton Coutnies, Michigan by Samuel W. Durant. published 1880 by D. W. Ensign & Co., Philadelphia, “Enos was the youngest in the family of Enos and Elizabeth (Griffin) Northrup which consisted of ten persons.” Seepage 312;

The A Judd Northrup reference does not show that the son Enos had a sister Ruth. The siblings specifically mentioned in this reference were Mary, Cornelius, Richard, Finetta, Sarah, Thomas and Enos.

Ten Ruth Northrups are indexed in the A Judd Northrup reference, but none is the Ruth Northrup I am searching for.

You state, "also i know that enos mother and father died when he was around 17." The son Enos was born Jan 13, 1813, so his father would have died around 1830; but the A Judd Northrop reference indicates the father Enos died in 1812.

In any case, the Ruth I am searching for was born about 1766-1767, about 28 years earlier than Mary, the first child referenced in the A Judd Northrup book.

I'm still searching for parents of Ruth Northrup who married John Jersey/Garsey.
Stanley Augustus Northrop

Hi there I am researching my Mum's family. She was Elsie Northrop born in Chingford on 20th August 1922. Her father was Stanley Augustus Northrop and her mother was Sarah Lily Silvey. They married in 1926 but he sadly died in 1928. Mum and most of her siblings went to live in Dr Barnardo homes in Barkingside and Woodford Bridge Essex. I know he was married before to Maude Emma Amelia Challis but I don't know when this marriage ended. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.
Sarah

Northrop family tree

My father:Henry Harris Northrop had 4 brothers, one of which was named Eugene and a sister named Priscilla which I have reason to believe has passed away. He was married to Carol Searles Bowen from Elba. I was their only child, born in 1938. My mother never wanted to talk about him, so I have only bits and pieces. He was an officer in the Army-Air Force, a pilot, supposedly shot down and a POW for the rest of the war. Lt. Commander? They were divorced when I was 2. He was from Batavia, New York. I did some sluething when I was 16 and found him at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. He had remarried, had a son and that is the last I knew. The wife was called Billy

Northrup/op history in England

I have gathered information on my family line from when they had immigrated to the States but need more information going farther back now.
My line starts with Joseph Northrup married to Mary Norton. He came over to Connecticut on the "Hector & Martha" in 1637/9. I believe that they originated in the Yorkshire area of England. Does anyone have any further information on this line?
email me at teamhair at charter dot net
