Noakes family of Kent, Surrey, Sussex
I am seeking information on ancestors/descendants of the following:
William Noakes (b abt 1784 Ticehurst?) m Mary Thompsett (b abt 1786). John Thompsett Noakes (b abt 1814 Wadhurst) m Elizabeth Wickham (b abt 1810 Hastings) Wickham Noakes (b abt 1840 Kennington) m Kate F? (b abt 1844).
There appears to be a connection to US Noakes's through Benjamin Thompsett Noakes (son of William) b abt 1828. He had a son, Charles L Noakes (b abt 1857 in Uckfield).
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Noakes family of Kent, Surrey, Sussex
the correct spelling of William's middle name was Maplesden. The Maplesden Noakes family were quite wealthy land owners from Strood, Kent. There is in fact a school named Maplesden Noakes school in Maidstone, Kent.

Re: Noakes family of Kent, Surrey, Sussex
My mother's maiden name was Maplesden Noakes (daughter of Myee's brother Sydney)and she was the niece of Myee Maplesden Noakes, after whom the school at Maidstone is named. It was named after her as she was Chairman? of Kent Education for many years. I taught at the school which bears the Noakes family crest as its insignia. Sydney and Myee were brought up in Australia and New Zealand where their father was MD of Clyde Shipping. They returned to UK in early 1900's.

Hi, I came across Myee Mapplesdon Noakes possibly in the company of my grandparents Eric and Helen Noakes on their return journey from Argentina to England in 1936. Any connection?

Re: Noakes family of Kent, Surrey, Sussex
Myee Maplesden Noakes was my great aunt, sister to my grandfather, Sydney Maplesden Noakes. Her name is a Maori (New Zealand)name as her mother was daughter of Prime Minister of New Zealand. The family returned from Australia to UK in early 1900's where her brother met my grandmother, daughter of vicar of East Malling. Myee was first woman to have private pilot's licence in England and was in Kent County Council and prominent in Kent education for many years until her death in 1965. She was awarded the MBE. Maplesden Noakes School is named after her. Also one of the buildings at Hadlow Horticultural College is named after her.

Re: Noakes family of Kent, Surrey, Sussex
My maternal grandmother was a Noakes of Ticehurst. She was the last one and she married a Reeves, another farming family, also of Ticehurst. The Noakes are an old Ticehurst family who can be traced back in the village to at least 1645 and several descendants live there still. I was brought up there. Amongst the many Noakes to have lived in Ticehusrt and surrounding villages are several called William. A william was buried in the Ticehurst Churchyard in 1824 and another in 1842. The headstones remain. My records which are not exhaustive, as they follow my own line, show Williams born in 1699,1726 and 1814.Happy to discuss.

Re: Noakes family of Kent, Surrey, Sussex
My grandfather was Ernest Noakes who lived and died in Crowthorne, Berkshire, married to Emma. He was born in Wadhurst. My father was Reginald Noakes.
I think I have correctly traced Ernest's father as Edwin Noakes, a farm bailiff from Catsfield, but I am not sure of his father being Thomas Noakes.
Do you have any further information? With thanks

Re: Noakes family of Kent, Surrey, Sussex
I wonder if you could help me to confirm that my grandfather Ernest Noakes' grandfather was Thomas Noakes, a shoemaker. Ernest Noakes was from Wadhurst Sussex and lived and died in Crowthorne, Berks where he worked as a butcher. His father was Edwin Noakes of Catsfield, Sussex.
Any information gratefully received. G. Noakes

Re: Noakes family of Kent, Surrey, Sussex
G'day Gillian
Was Ernest born about 1868 and did he marry Mary Emmaa Skelton?
If so, then his grandparents would be Edward Noakes/Sarah Sinden. His father Edwin being born about 1830 Catsfield and dying about 1902.
If the above fits with what you know about Ernest, then I can provide more information on his ancestry as I'm a descendant of Edward and Sarah.
Best rgds
