I am researching the NOAH surname. Arthur Noah was born in Berkhampstead in Hertfordshire, England in 1886. I have found out from looking at census records that he was the second youngest of 11 children. His father’s name was William Noah (b.1844) and he was born in Ley Hill which is just outside of Chesham in Buckinghamshire. His wife’s name was Hannah and I think her maiden name was Puddephatt.

Williams father’s name was Joseph (b. about 1817?) and his mothers name was Elizabeth (né Scott). I have found quite a large number Noahs in UK census records, the BMD index and the IGI with connections to either Chesham or Berkhampstead as well as a larger number in other places in Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire as well as Bedfordshire and London.

I would be happy to share any information I have with anyone who is researching the Noah surname (and of course receive any information they may have). At the moment I am trying to establish the connection between Joseph Noah and his family and other Noahs in Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire.

By the way I am in the UK. I am aware that the surname exists in the United States and elsewhere but so far I have not established any connection (although I would be happy to hear from any Noahs outside the UK who think they may have British ancestors)

I have tried to research my Noah family. My grandfather was Arthur Noah (1890-1948) born in Chelsea and married to Mary Jane Campbell. My great grandparents were Francis Anthony Noah (B 1867 in Berhamstead)and Maria Jane Owen (B 1863 in Marylebone). They married in 1885 and lived in London. He abandoned the family and went to find gold in south Africa (where family rumour had it he had a second family in Peitermarisburg).

Francis father was a William Noah (about 1838-1878) born in Northchurch, Hampshire and married to Sarah Ann (about 1838) from Bushey. William & Sarah had 6 children including Francis. The older ones were born in Berhamstead & the younger ones in London. She returned to Herts when he dies.

In 1841 census William aged 3 is living with a James Gewer (b.about 1816) & Elizabeth Gewer (b.about 1821) in Berkhamstead. This did not make much sense and there were more than 1 William Noahs in the area. However Williams first child was called Cornelius Gewer Noah (born 1863) with Francis Anthony Noah the second son. Given the Gewer name being used for the eldest son, I wondered if William Noah had been 'lent' to the Gewers to take care of and was really born to Noahs in Northchurch, Hampshire.

Thats as far as I got. Not sure if this links with your research at all but if you are still looking into it then get in touch and I can add any more I have.

I have a John Noah of Christ Church, Spitalfields who married Lavinia Cooper in 1748 (Fleet Marriage). They moved to Whitechapel & near St George in the East, so in the East End before it was built up and descended into the stark poverty of the next century. Several children - John, Thomas, Henry, Shem, Elizabeth, Margaret, James, Adam ( (died young) Esther b 1765. John was a 'musicioner' but hasn't appeared in any directories that I have checked so far, so I suspect that he was a street musician. I've spotted other musicians in the family and, I think, possible sister's marriages to other musicians. I can't find John's birth and wonder if he came from Herts or Bucks originally. He would have been born in the mid 1720s if he was in his mid twenties when he married. Anyway, there's a small clutch of Noah's in 18th C East London that I've researched, to add to the information here.
