Hello again Olwen, I am sorry to hear of the recent loss of your husband, it must be a very sad time for you.

As far as our family history is concerned, I live in Aberdeen so my research has been restricted to online so far but I have some census details for our family from 1841 to 1901 and many certificates from 1837 onwards. I had never managed to find a birth entry for either Augustus or Kate to confirm names of their parents. I had the marriage cert for Augustus and Kate (1861) which gives his father as George Nisbett. I then found census entries showing Augustus living with his father James Frederick and this has puzzled me for a long time. I was also contacted by a descendant of Annie Maria's Upsall family a couple of years ago who shared their family line with me back to 1800.

I am looking forward to sharing all this information with you. Kindest regards meanwhile, Jill

Hello Jill, thanks for the reply. My husband Robert was your dads cousin as Henry Norman was his uncle, known as uncle Norman. Sadly my husband 'Bob' passed away in March this year but we would still like to carry on the search as far as possible. Bobs dad was Arthur Frederick, brother to Henry Norman, Raymond, Constance and Annie May, both sisters still living. We have the baptism certificate for Augustas Frederick, his parents are named on it as James Frederick and Eliza. Birth certificate of Arthur Edward born 1881,Wrangle, Lincs and the marriage certificate of Arthur Edward and Annie Maria Upsall which took place at Leverton, Lincs. Hope your house move is successful and i will hear from you soon. Olwen.

Hello Olwen and sorry for the delay - I have only just seen your message. I haven't done any family history for a couple of years and we are just about to move house so my records are all packed away at the moment! If you can bare with me for a few weeks I will happily share information with you.

Who is your husband's father? We must be fairly closely related! Arthur Edward was my great grandfather, his son Henry Norman, (married to Jessie) was my grandfather (and grandmother) , and Trevor is my Dad.

I have quite a bit of detail and a few photographs of Arthur Edward and Augustus and Kate. I have never managed to get concrete evidence of Augustus's childhood and parentage - I have snippets but have never quite managed to tie it all up and make sense of it! Maybe you will have more luck than me!
Thanks for getting in touch,
Jill
Hi there Derrick and thanks for your message. I haven't done anything with my family history for a couple of years and we are just about to move house so my records are packed away at the moment!!! Bad timing, but bare with me I will get back to you with more information when I can get my hands on it! Off the top of my head I do recall that Ellen Jessie ( I think I only knew of her as Jessie) did become untraceable at an early age but I didn't know the story which you told.

What was the name of your Grandmother and who brought her up? I do have patchy information on Augustus and Kate after 1901 which I will happily share with you when I can get to it! My g Grandfather, Arthur Edward moved to Sheffield to work and Augustus and Kate followed him and were there until their deaths. I have never had much joy tracing the childhoods and parents of either though in London. I have patchy clues but have failed to find concrete evidence! do you know any more about them?
Jill, Aberdeen

John Reid Nisbet / WIlliam Begbie Nisbet - Scotland to Australia

I am searching for information regarding John Reid Nisbet (b. 8 Dec 1909) and William Begbie Nisbet (b. 3 Feb 1913), both born in Edinburgh, Scotland. John and William are the sons of Robert Nisbet (10 Dec 1883 - 23 Mar 1918) and Elizabeth Mill Taylor (24 Dec 1886 - 15 Jan 1917) who were married 27 Nov 1908 in Edinburgh. Robert Nisbet was killed in France during WWI and, as his wife Elizabeth had predeceased him, both John and William were apparently sent to Australia.
A recent letter has been returned with the advice "addressee has gone away". Steve took great delight in telling me of their new Oakwood address so that we would not lose touch.
Colin, how nice it was to receive your e-mail. You know as much about my Thomas as I do. Yes, you have found my husband's great great grandfather. Since posting my request for info I too have found much of the info you have written. We think the eldest Thomas was born in Ayr, Scotland. Having three Thomas' in a row is quite confusing and at first I gave up. I keep returning. I have no clue as to what brought him to Papplewick or much of his life whilst living there. It appears he only had the one son, Thomas. I tried searching the neice Sophia from Scotland to try and locate siblings or parents in Scotland. Only find one possibility, parents Robert and Elizabeth (Campbell) Nisbet from Kilmarnock, note one t, married about 1895 and did have a son Thomas born in or about 1816. Have never been able to confirm this or find siblings to prove this is in fact him.
My husband John and I have visited the village of Papplewick in the spring of 1997. It is so lovely. The Rev. a the time gave us a tour of the church and grounds. You are right, both Thomas and Dorothy died in Bolsover, Derbyshire on the dates you indicated.
Are you from Papplewick? We live in Northern California near San Francisco. The youngest Thomas came to SF in 1923 with his wife and two sons. He too was a gardener, both in England and America.
I will look through my papers and see if I have anything of interst concerning Papplewick and let you know.
Thank you again for all your hard work and info. If you have any suggestions as to how to proceed in confirming the eldest Thomas and his Scottish family, I would be grateful.
Sincerely,
Nancy Nisbett
Stuck in California
Thomas Nisbet ran a phonography society from his occupational address in Whitehall - I think. He worked for the Poor Law Board around 1857. His brother (who may be called james) wrote to him regularly in shorthand. There could be a link to Hangchow - China between 1858-1866. There may also be a younger family member or close friend called Dick who worked as a clerk.
Any bells ringing?

Hello there Jill,
I have been researching the execution of Mary LEFLEY of Wrangle Lincolnshire. I'll cut a very long story short...I generally waffle on for hours without breath....anyway, i finally received the Home Office documentation, and your Augustus was a witness for the prosecution! Exciting stuff eh.
There is rather a detailed statement from him....should I post it here, or send it to you privately? My e mail address is b.jordan@ntlworld.com. Let me know if you would like a transcription of the whole of the document. I think its a bit long to type up in one of these messages.
Thanks for replying
Brenda

3 Nesbitt / Nesbit Brothers

I am looking for information on 3 Nesbit / Nesbitt brothers - William, Robert and John - who came from Aberdeen (maybe just sailed from there) to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia in 1820. One of these men is my ggg grandfather. William started building ships for Archibald and Company in Sydney Cape Breton in 1829 and became a well known shipwright building ships all over Cape Breton. He was commissioned for most of the Archibald ships. William's nephew, Andrew also built ships and William's son, John also joined them in this occupation. One would think that since William was so well known as a shipwright there would be something on him. William was born 1803 and died 1877. Any help or information will be GREATLY appreciated.
Ann Lewis,
Weymouth, NS
