Yes, we tend these days not to appreciate the wonders of modern science, and how this has changed our lives. Personally, if I had lived at that time, I would not be writing to you or any one else at my current age - I'd have most likely been long dead from acute appendicitis in my early 20s.

Perhaps one day when I'm flush with funds, I might buy Bertha's death certificate to find out what exactly killed her at such a tender age.
