In our local paper is a color photo taken Memorial Day, May 27, '02 of this man's gravesite/stone at Ivy Green Cem., Bremerton, WA. The paper says he was a Civil War sailor and Medal of Honor recipient. Standing next to the gravestone is a Vietnam vet holding the American Flag and saluting. If anyone is related to John Nibbe and would like a copy of this picture--send me your mailing address via my email. I will be happy to provide a copy for a short period of time.

John Nibbe was the quartermaster on the USS Petrel, a Union gunboat patrolling the Mississippi in April, 1864 and captured by the Confederates. He was one of 3 captured - my great great grandfather Thomas McElroy, Master of the Petrel, being another. Nibbe was awarded the medal of honor.

I will scan you the obit, however there isn't any info concerning his ancestors or his children. You might be able to obtain a death record from Olympia, WA. Have you seen the WA website via http://www.usgenweb.com/ ?

Hi Gayle,

I was wondering if you heard from any relatives of this man. I found an article about him and his niece Annie Tollner of Sydney (I'm not sure if this is Sydney - Australia, Canada or America) . I from an Australian Tollner line and need to know where she was from.

Thanks, Jennifer

Lief Erickson (steamer)
The Lief Erickson, built this year, met with a terrible fate in December while off Al Ki Point en route from Seattle to Sydney. The steamer was in command of John H. Nibbe, with W. W. Gates, chief engineer, and Charles Poulsen, mate. At 5:00 P.M., when about five miles out from Seattle, a lamp exploded, setting fire to the boat. The flames ran through the cabin, creating a panic among the thirty people on board, and several jumped into the water and were lost. Captain Nibbe at once launched the raft, and many of the passengers put on life preservers. A niece of Captain Nibbe, Annie Tollner of Sydney, drowned almost within reach of her uncle, who made frantic efforts to save her. The steamers Skagit Chief and Mountaineer, were about four miles away when the fire broke out, and crowded on all steam possible in order to be of service. When within half a mile of the steamer they began to pick up the survivors, and in this manner over twenty were saved. The Henry Bailey, Politkofski, and Edith also hurried to the Citation: Tacoma Public Library

I recieved a few requests for copies of the newspaper picture but no one has given me much info about him. I'll check to see if I still have their emails. They would probably be on this site somewhere requesting the copy. I'll see what I can find. That is an interesting article you have. Do you want me to scan you a copy? I't's in color and I would send it via my other email.
