Hi my name is William Brandstadter son of Marilyn O'brien, grandson of William and Mabel O'brien William Neftelberg before the name change. William O'brien was born in April of 1898. In the 1960's and 70's we lived in Canarsie, brooklyn ny. on east 88th street. Walter's name came up a lot, and I met aunt Frances one time around 1967. I did not know of any other family. If anyone would like more info or would like to add more info feel free to contact me at bil1131@aol.com

Hi Neftelbergers. Fascinating history about the name changes! I am not a descendant of this line, but while looking for Mary Ellen Wilmot (see wife of Sigmund in previous post) I came across some info that might help you with your research.

Sigmund Neftelberg(er) died at Metropolitan Hospital in Manhattan 4 Nov 1928 at the age of 54 per death certificate #27503. His parents are listed as Nathan Neftelberg and Bertha Mueller (not Adler). The undertaker was the Superintendent of the Odd Fellow Home and it notes he was admitted on May 24, 1926. It also indicates he was single, not widowed or divorced. He is buried at Kensico Cemetery.

I also have a Mary Neftelberger (that is not Mary Ellen Wilmot)who died 19 Nov 1933 at age 45 at Bellevue Hospital, Manhattan per death certificate #24771. Her parents are listed as John Hazen and Mary Miller, and her husband's name is Ly______ ? Neftelberger. They resided at 193 East 7th St., NYC. She is buried at Lutheran Cemetery.

Some other random notes I have come across:
Sigmund Neftelberger married 2/22/1890 Manhattan
Walter Neftelberger married 3/24/1907 Brooklyn
Walter Neftelberger married 8/23/1930 Brooklyn
William Neftelberger married 12/10/1923 Brooklyn
Pauline Neftelberger married Max Stern 11/25/1900 Manhattan
Henry Neftelberger died 1915 @ 52 yrs.
Joseph Neftelberger married Julia Rhiel, and he died 1939 @ 67 yrs and she died 1/10/1939 in Brooklyn
Charles F. Neftelberger was charged for leaving the scene of an accident in Brooklyn in 1931
Leopold Neftelberger married Gisella Gluck 6/17/1900 in Brooklyn and died 5/16/1948 in Manhattan @ 66 yrs
Alexander Neftelberger married Frieda Birnstiel and died in Vineland, NJ
Nathan Neftelberger died 11/1/1918 Manhattan and Bertha Neftelberger died 8/22/1910 in Brooklyn. I see from a previous post that your ancestors are buried in a jewish cemetery in Bayside. I don't know which cemetery, but you might be interested to view the current status of this Bayside Jewish Cemetery if this is where they are; it is a very troubling situation.
http://citynoise.org/article/8696
My grandfather, Raymond Neftleberg, was also one of their brothers and Grace Neftleberg was the other sister. Raymond and his wife, Marie Rodenbach (Germany descent) had 10 children, Philip, Raymond Jr., Theresa Rose, Marjorie Anne, Henry John, William James, Gerard Joseph, Mary Julia, Linda Ruth, Caroline. Only Marjorie, Henry and Mary are still living. The rest have passed within the last 7 years. They grew up in Ridgewood, Brooklyn on Linden Street. We visited the O'Brien's many times. I think Willie and Pat lived in Canarsie. I hope this helps your search.

Hi! I am actually Florence Neftelberg's granddaughter (and Dave Neftelberg's great-niece). My grandmother has been fascinated by the amount of work you have done to trace her family line. She has always told me about Nathan and Bertha, and showed me some document from Immigration (?)that showed family members and their ages at the time. If you have not already spoken to my grandmother, and have any questions for her, feel free to contact me and I will convey the word. Good luck!

Hello Neftelberger family. My name is Dr. Thomas G. O'Brien II. I am Tracielyn Ann O'Brien-Rydzewski's (Tra) older brother. I would love to speak with family members and learn more about our family. Below, I will provide some information my sister and I gathered over the last few years. First, Nathan Neftelberger married Bertha Adler. They were German Jews from Bavaria. Bavaria is the largest state in Germany. They immigrated from Germany early to mid 1800s to New York City. They had nine children. Eight siblings I can not locate. They either died without marring ending thier blood line, changed their name or were female who married and took their spouses name. The blood line I was able to track was, Joseph Neftelberger who Tra and I are from. Actually, everyone who I've spoken to are from this blood line. Joseph Neftelberger, a German Jew who spoke English, German and Yidish married Julia Byle who was a Irish Christain. They had eight children. These children are our great grand parents. Tra's and my great grand parent was, Joseph Gerard O'Brien. Ok, I know your wondering, where did the O'Brien name come from... well, appearently, Joseph Neftelberger left Julia and returned to his Jewish people, possibly Williamsburg section of New York City leaving Julia to raise their children alone. From what I understand, Julia allowed her cousin, Ann O'Brien to raise her kids. How many, it is not clear, my grand parents can not recall. Maybe another relative can clearify how many were raised by Ann O'Brien. The children raised by Ann O'Brien thought they were O'Briens not Neftelbergers. Some of children offically took on the O'Brien name by petitioning the courts for an offical name change. I have an official document dated 1920 granting our great grand father, Joseph Gerard a name from neftelberger to O'Brien. In this letter, it also states that Julia Byle, his mother allowed Ann O'Brien, his mothers cousin, to care for him. Other children of Jospeh Neftelberger and Julia Byle kept Neftelberger root but dropped the er, hence Neftelberg. I was told by Cousin Marcy, wife of Cousin David Nefteberg that one brother changed his name to Sparkel. So, if your name is Neftelberg, your name most likely changed in the 1920s. Back to the family, Joseph Neftelberger married Julia Byle, they had 8 children. Tra and my great grand father was Joseph Gerard O'Brien who married Lillain Moll (German Lutheran). They had a son, our grand father Gerard O'Brien. Gerard O'Brien married Helen Hally. They had four children. Thomas, Alice, Kathlene and SueEllen. Thomas Married Carole Ann Cerrela. Had two children, Dr. Thomas and Tracielyn Ann. Alice married Ralph Perigene (now Divorced) and had two kids. Michael and Jean. Kathlene married Thomas Boudry(Now divoreced). They had two sons Christohpher and Scott. SueEllen Married Randy Warren and had one daugther, Auragea. I would love to hear from family.
Hi Tracie, its cousin Billy here, I have to say hello to aunt Marcy too her and uncle Davey were always very good to me growing up.... Aunt Marcy I also met Tyler on Myspace so the family gets bigger and bigger even tho we lose some,

as you know my Dad and uncle Ray and Gerry are gone as well as Aunts Theresa and Linda, but Aunt Margie and Uncle Henry remain, and a Whole truckload of us Kids Remain.

The thing I have to add to the discussion is that Whether our names are Neftleberg, Neftelberg, Neftelberger, or OBrien, there is one characteristic that shines through and really it is the only one that matters, and that is Love.
from my earliest memories, Love of family and and Love of life in general, were the guideposts that we followed, whether it was Stephen and Michelle and Louis, who were the cousins who taught me, or Uncle Charlie and Aunt Florence, whowere the models of love for my Uncle Davey or Tracie's and Tommy's Parents who, though I've never met them, obviously taught the same wonderful lessons because as I've grown to know them, they are indeed "fruit of the same tree." it is that All encompassing love that marks us all.

We are all very fortunate, and for those of you I haven't had the Pleasure of meeting yet, dont worry I'm just like you and I hope you teach your children what it means to be part of this wonderful family.

PEACE AND LOVE TO YOU ALL

I'm an O'Brien. My grandfather is Gerard. His father was Joseph Neftleberger O'Brien. Joseph was raised by Julia's sister or Aunt. We're not sure because there really isn't any records. I have been in touch with quite a few Neftleberg's over the last 5 years and it is wonderful to find family. The O'Brien's are a small bunch. We all seemed to grow up on Long Island so close to each other but not knowing we could have had a larger family then we did. My brother Dr. Thomas O'Brien (baccracr@aol.com) is doing some research. I know he would love to hear from you.

Hi!
I was just browsing the internet and I saw your entries! Nathan and Bertha are actually my great-great grandparents (if I got all those "greats" right!) My grandmother talks about them all the time. If I remember correctly, they came from Bavaria. I do vaguely remember her talking about the name O'Brien (spelling?)and a son that was adopted into another family. My grandmother was just Neftelberg by the time I got around. (dropped the "von" and the "-er")

Grace, Are we sure Julia's last name is Blyle? That is a German name. I was wondering if we have any information on Her family and the O'Briens. As far as the censes..I found that Julia didn't die but was living and in the 1910 censes didn't have Joseph living with her. I have heard from O'brien side that he drank but I don't know for sure. I thought she died and gave the kids up but by the looks of the censes 1880 and 1910 that is not true. Joseph my g-grandfather was in the 1880 but not in the 1910 so he had to been given to the O'Brien's during that time. Any information please email my brother Dr. Tommy O'Brien at baccracr@aol.com

Hello,

My great grandfather is Joseph O'Brien, he changed his name from Joseph Neftelberger. He was raised by Pat O'Brien. William and Joseph were the only children of Joseph Neftelberger that changed their name. Most of the children have shorten their name down to Neftelberg or Neftleberg. You can locate family on Long Island today and family in Queens. I've seen Nathan and Bertha's Information online but thought that was 1 generation prior to the "abandonment of Joseph's children to be raised by O'Briens". I would like to find out why these children where raised by non-family and why the family abandoned these children because Joseph married outside of the jewish faith. Do you know any history..email me tjrydzewsk2@msn.com

Kris,

There is a possibility that your surname might be shortened from Neftelberger. My great grandfather came from Austria/Germany. They were from the Jewish faith. I don't have first names but can get them from my grandfather. From my understanding. The 4 youngest neftelbergers where raised by a family that live across the street from them called the O'Briens (In NYC) ..this is how my grandfather's name changed as well as his faith.
