Does anyone have any info on John Neagle a famous portrait painter of the time? He was born in Boston in 1796 his parents were visting Boston from Philadelphia. He married a daughter or step-daughter of Thomas Sully another famous painter in 1820. Any info would be appreciated.

Some important information may be obtained by writing the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, 1300 Locust Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107-5699. Ask for the R.W. Torchia catalogue: John Neagle, Philadelphia Portrait Painter. $19.95, plus shipping, 44.00. If I can help in any other way please advise.

Dear Jim,

Thanks for the info. Do you have the Torchia catalog? I am looking forward to getting it. Just wondering if it has any info on John's children? I know he had a couple of daughters, trying to find out if he had any sons.

Classification: Marriage
Surnames: Neagle, Sully, Taylor, Jones
John Neagle, son of Maurice Neagle and Susannah Taylor, married Miss Mary Chester Sully on 28 May 1826, aged 22 years, 8 months & 10 days, in the front room on the second story of Sully's house in Philadelphia.
I have done some research on John & would be happy to share. His mother was a sister to Lydia Taylor who married Christopher Marshall Jones. Lydia & C M Jones are my great-great-great-grandparents.
Hope to hear from you.

Hi Andy,
So glad to see your post!
I would love to have some photos or scans of the family Bible and some of the artifacts that you have, plus the line of descent from John Neagle to your wife Lorraine. I did some research on Neagle in Philadelphia a few years ago and saw some of his paintings and read some of his letters. He painted a picture of Lydia Taylor Jones, his mother's sister, among other relatives.
