Would like to have some holes filled or other sources to research on George Washington Neafus, father of Squire Hines Neafus. George was around Nelson Co., KY not sure of birth or area. Squire was in the Butler and Ohio Co., KY area. Any information or leads would be appreciated.

Like you, I am still running into brick wall with Wash Neafus. Wash was my great great grandfather, Squire H. was my great grandfather and John Franklin was my grandfather who married Flora Belle Tucker and my father being John Henry Neafus who married Anna Jo Wilson. I have Squire's Marriage Bond listing Wash's county of birth but nothing more.Wash was 60 years of age at the time of the 1880 census - meaning he was born in 1820. I have TRIED to place him in several families but can't fit him in! I have lots on the Hudsons (Hannah married Wash) but it is like he dropped from the sky. Of course, we are all operating under the assumption that he was George Washington Neafus but everything we have just uses Wash or Washington Neafus. Why?

Debbie, I would like to see what you have on the Hudsons. Also, we spoke about a year back, did you ever stop and see Squire Hines Neafus oldest daughter? I will be in Baizetown, KY for the EMBRY family reunion the first Saturday of September prior to Labor Day--if you have the time stop by, lots of cousins will be there. You will know that you are there--it will be located across the road from the New Zion Missionary Baptist Chruch. The food is great and we would enjoy meeting another part of the family. I am flying in from DC. So hope you can make it.

Have been out of town and did not get message about reunion. Would have loved to have attended reunion. Did you make it in? Still hitting brick wall on good ol' grandfather Wash Neafus. I know he was born in 1820 in Mercer County and that's as far as I can get. He was 60 in the 1880 census. He just doesn't seem to fit anywhere. Yes, I did speak with Squire's daughter about a year ago but have not made it down there to visit her due to mother's deterioration. Keep me posted on the Wash hunt and I will do the same.

Years later, here's a possible clue. My gggg-grandfather was George W. Neafus (1779, Virginia - 1844, Meade County, Kentucky). Perhaps he may have been father or grandfather of the George W. Neafus born in 1820.

I was just going to look for Neafus in the 1850 census of Meade County, but ancestry.com is not responding at the moment. On Heritage Quest I find a George W. Neafus born in Kentucky about 1813 (age 47) and residing in Meade County in 1860. There were 8 people with the surname in that county and two more in Hardin County.
