Max naumann was my grandfather. My Mom, Maxine, is 92 yrs old and the youngest daughter. He had 12 children and my moms 1/2 sister Hulda. She often talked of uncle Paul and Arno. I have a transulated copy of Johann's journal of his trip here to see his boys in 1901, his picture and his wife's picture, amalia naumann. Richndeana1@juno.com

Interesting that you should ask. I got interested in genealogy because of a similar question.
To answer your question. Yes, it's possible that some Naumans or Naumanns are from a Jewish background. They are variants of the name Neumann, which is very often Jewish, as is Newman. They all mean "new man" in German. Now, are YOUR Naumans Jewish. I don't know, but its probably not very likely. I have not been able to find anything that would suggest MY Naumanns were Jewish. But, that doesn't mean that either your or my ancestors were not Jewish before the name became Nauman/Naumann. Over the centuries there was very strong pressure on Jewish people throughout Europe to convert, if for no other reason that to escape the incredible abuses that befell them from the majority.
You might want to dig further with JewishGen.com.

Lavina, wife of John Nauman

My great-great grandfather was John Nauman (Birth: 13 Aug 1829 in Paradise, Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Death: 9 Jul 1894 in Boyceville, Dunn, Wisconsin.) I'm looking for more information about his first wife, Lavina, whose maiden name I think was Crotcher. According to a family history that my grandfather, Alex Nauman, wrote down, she was born 7 Sep 1838 in Pennsylvania & died 12 Oct 1869. She is buried in Eau Claire, WI - although it's possible that she died somewhere else. They were married in 1851 (she would have been only 13), although their first child (Sarah Ann) wasn't born until 1856. The 1860 census has them listed as John & Lovina Namin, in Madison, Luzerne, PA, (along with their daughters Sarah A, 8, & Mary E, 1.) The 1870 census has John Nauman (Nouman) in the town of Wheaton, Chippewa County, WI (with children Elizabeth 12, Emery 10, & John 7.) He married Julia Ann Baker Culp (the widow of Cornelius Culp) on 13 Sep 1870.

John & Lavina's children:
Sarah Ann 1856-1940 (married Philip Albert Kingsland)
Mary Elizabeth "Libby" 1859-1938 (married Jacob Eclistic Culp)
Emery Isaiah 1861-1933 (married Carrie May Decker)
John Frederick "Fred" 1863-1941 (married Emma Lena Kolb)

Any help is appreciated!
I have Leonadis Ossian Nauman b 23 Oct 1867. He was from Keokuk County, Iowa. At one time there were a lot of Naumans in that area that came directly from Germany to settle. His father was Charles A. Nauman b 29 Jan 1833 in Germany.

I also have a marriage certificate stating Leo married a Anna Slattery at Jackson, Missouri, when he was 48. No one in the family knew he re-married after his first wife passed away. They were married 2 Dec 1915. Would enjoy hearing the rest of the story if anyone knows.

There is a rather large group of Naumann/Nauman's who are, and were, Jewish. My immediate family escaped the small town of Unsleben in Bavaria where they had lived for generations. I have been able to trace the line back to Untersotzbach in Hesse to the mid 17 hundreds.
There are also significant parts of the family currently in Israel.

He emigrated to America May 10 1896. He joined his older brothers, Paul and Max in Iowa. Their father visited them there in 1901, returned to Germany, and died there in 1903. Max and Arno had the same mother...and had two sisters who remained in Germany.Paul's mother was Johannes' first wife. The story is that Johannes oldest son died while in the army and he sent his other sons to America before they were of age to have to go in the army.
Arno married Freda Bornstein about 1904 in Iowa. They moved about 1918, and lived the rest of their lives in LeRoy, Mower Co., MN. They had 10 children, the last three born in Minnesota. If this is the Arno Nauman you're looking for, I can send more info.

Johannes Friedrich, Paul, Max, Arno Nauman of Iowa/Minn

These are my husband's ancestors. All were born in Frankenburg, Saxony, Germany...and the father, Johannes, sent his sons to America when they were 17, 17, & 14...starting in 1888. His first son died while in the army and he didn't want to lose his other sons to war, so he sent them to America. I know a lot about Paul, and some about Arno...but not much about Max. He was born in 1875 and married a woman named Lydia. They had 12 children. I don't know if they stayed in Iowa.
I'd love to hear from anyone who knows anything about these Naumans.

Hello,

I am looking for any information on William Reiff Nauman and his family who lived in the Bethlehem, PA area. I believe that he was my great-great grandfather; William Nauman Jr. would have been my great-grandfather, William Reiff Nauman III was my grandfather, who married Mary Bluder, and they had my mother and her brother William Reiff Nauman IV. If you have any information at all and would be willing to share it, I would be very grateful.

Thank you kindly,

Kate Hohman

hello! i am new to this thread, but trying to begin a bit of family research nonetheless. i think william reiff nauman is my great grandfather--he had a son, also william reiff nauman who married my grandmother mary bluder. mary and william (william died around 1960 i think) had a son whom they also named willian reiff nauman, my uncle who died in 1981. i would be curious to know more about the first william reiff's parents, elizabeth and peter nauman. where were they from? what did they do?

It is interesting to read this question about Nauman/Naumann being Jewish? I have not heard this before. I have been told some who spell it Neumann may be Catholic. Well anyway, I'm wondering if what you mean by "Jewish" is one who practices Judaism or one who is by lineage Ashkenazi or Sephardic? If it's the former anyone can be considered Jewish. If it's the latter, perhaps DNA testing could answer the question. I have done the Y-dna testing. It can be interesting what you learn.
Now I believe Paul Newman's (the actor) father was Jewish but not his mother.

I am interested in genealogy for this reason as well. One of my professors (I'm in grad school), has converted because of a feeling she is Jewish. Apparently it's a fairly common phenomenon. I did find out about the Neumann thing. I still have a few other options I'm looking into, Berline/Czplinski, Agan and Baker. I know about the pressure in Germany, but the Ashkenazi Jews resisted that for quite sometime, especially when Poland was expanded and larger than it was. Not to mention the Ashkenazi Jews taking up residence in the Rhineland, which from what I understand is largely where my Naumans are from. It would have been a lot more convenient if they had written this down...

One minor correction: According to her obituary, Emily died at Banner Boswell Medical Center in Sun City, not at home as I wrote in my first post.
Sorry for the mistake.
Richard Aurand Sherer

Unrelated to the first post. However, I am from the Floyd County region in Iowa. My great grandfather was Emmett Nauman, married to Johannah Janssen. His father was Paul Nauman, married to Lillie May Gerholt. I think there is a strong possibility there is a connection there.
