My family lived in the Netherlands from the early 1600's... until an undetermined date. I know that by the late 19th Century they were living in Salonica, Greece. From there, they migrated to the US in the early 20th Century. From family history, I understand that they left Spain after the Inquisition -- and, took the name Naar in Holland because they were supposedly treated well by the Dutch people at the time. That's about all I know, but I'd be fascinated to find out more about their earlier history. Regards, Stu Naar

My NAAR family originates in Spain before 1492. Upon the inquisition, the family fled to Portugal. In 1497, the NAARs were forced to convert to Catholicism to avoide persecution. (At some points in the time, their name is also spelled NAHAR.) From there, the family branched to many places. By c. 1550, a branch had been established in Salonika, (present day Greece) then part of the Ottoman Empire, where the NAARs reverted back to open Judaism. This is where my grandfather was born. From there, the family came to the US by c. 1920, specifically the NY/NJ area. The branch that remained in Portugal finally settled in Amterdam, Holland by c. 1620 and likewise reverted back to open practice of Judaism. From Amsterdam, due to comercial relations, the NAARs branched out to Hamburg, Germany by c. 1630, to Curacao in the Netherlands Antilles by c. 1660, to Livorno, Italy by c. 1670, and to London, England by c. 1830. From Curacao, the first NAARs came to the US by c. 1790. From England, NAARs came to the US by c. 1910. IF YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION REGARDING THE NAAR FAMILY PLEASE CONTACT ME!!!!
