Hi, Chris,

I am researching Winnefred, born abt 1832 Ire, married a James or John Mongovan. They immigrated to Davenport Ia area because they had relatives there. Then they moved to the Kansas city area in the 1860s and had their own business, which had something to do with laying RR right of way. He was killed in the Civil War and she remarried Michael Deloughry probably from Co. Clare. Her dau, Hanora Agnes born 1862 was a Mongovan..as spelled on a marriage certificate and my husband's great grandmother. Does any of this sound familiar to you? thanks, Judy Bethel

How wonderful to find a Mungovan contact. I haven't found a connection to your Mungovans as I too reached a "dead end", so I swapped sides of my family to research and have been working on my father's side. I still have all of my Mungovan information though and will go through it all to see if I have come across your family. My great-great grandmother is Anne Mungovan born Ennis circa 1843 and her parents were James Mungovan and Anne Duffy but I haven't found out much about them. Anne came to Australia in 1861 on the SS Great Britain. I know she had two brothers, Patrick & Martin, who also came to Australia and I would say that there may be more brothers and sisters. My Anne worked as a domestic servant for a family in Keilor (interesting story there!) and then moved to North Melbourne. With your family coming from Ennis as well, I will work through a try and find some connection. When I started my work on the Mungovan family many many years ago, I did not have the internet to access records like I can today, so now you have given me the incentive to do some digging, but from experience the Irish records (most of which were destroy) are difficult to trace. I seem to remember coming across Michael Mungovan and Mary Egan, so I will check my records. Good luck with your research and I will keep in touch. Regards

Hi there - I am living in Australia too and am related to the Mungovan's - my great Grandfather was James MUNGOVAN born 1862 in Ennis, County Clare. His parents were Michael MUNGOVAN born abt 1845 in Ennis and Mary EGAN. James moved to Australia - but I don't know when and later married Caroline LANGDON born 1873. They lived and died in Goulburn, NSW. Their children were Magdalene, Mary, Roy and William MUNGOVAN. My Grand Mother is Magdalene - my fathers mother. Are you related to this line of MUNGOVAN's? Maybe Michael and your Anne are related (brother and sister??) I am also finding it hard to locate any info from the Ireland side of things and am trying to find details of the parents of Michael MUNGOVAN and Mary EGAN but have hit a dead end.

Hello,

I have a Michael Mungovan born 4 Feb 1840 in County Claire, Ireland. He left Ireland as a young man, late teens or early 20s for Australia, I am not sure where in Australia. This Michael arrived in the US in 1870 (this arrival year is documented) and eventually married and raised a family there. This Michael was a tall man, with red hair, blue eyes and did not read or write.

This is probably not your Michael, and if the sons George and Michael are younger than son James, who was born about
1870, the year my Michael arrived in the US, then I would feel comfortable saying definitely different people; however these would be two men with the same name, of the same approximate age, in the same country at about the same time, so you might find the information on "my" Michael useful to differentiate the two in any records you may find.

I have given you all the information I have about "my" Michael prior to his arrival in the US. If you find anything about him in your research I would appreciate it if you passed it on to me and I will certainly do the same with your Michael.

Hi Mungovans!,

James Joseph Mungovan (b. 12/2/1865 - d. abt. 1946) was my great great grandfather on my father's side. He had a daughter named Marion (b. 1/30/1895 - d. 1/10/1980) with his wife Sarah R. Robertson (b. 11/9/1864 - d. abt. 1917). Marion married Harold Roberts and they had a son James is my father.

I'm trying to find our more about James Joseph Mungovan. I'd like to find his exact death date (he lived/died in Belmont, MA) and more about his decendency.

I know your posting was from awhile ago but I am trying to tie Michael J. Mungovan (his wife was Jane Guthrie) to James, Thomas (your great-grandfather) and Anne Mungovan Chappelle. According to Thomas' obituary, he had 2 brothers, James J. and Michael J., both of Lowell and a sister, Mrs. Frank Chappelle. Anne's marriage record lists her parents as John Mungovan and Mary Quinlan. James death record lists the parents as John Mungovan and Mary Quinlan. Thomas death record lists his parents as John Mungovan and Mary Quinlivin. But Michael J. Mungovan's death record lists his parents as John Mungovan and Ann Ginivan (which could be a typo). Do you have any information on Thomas parents or other siblings? Have you done any research on the other Mungovan families living in Lowell (Frank Mungovan, Patrick and Ellen Carey Mungovan)?

Thank you.

Hi ~

I've completed the Y-chromosome 37-marker DNA testing at Family Tree DNA. My results are available there at www.familytreedna.com and my results are shown next to kit 51271. I also posted my results at the Irish Heritage DNA Project website at http://homepage.eircom.net/~ihdp/ihdp/dna_results.htm . Perhaps it's time for other Mongoven/Mungovan/Mongovan/etc. males to be tested. With solid traditional genealogy, the science of DNA is a powerful tool...let's find out where we originated in Ireland/Europe.

Sincerely,
Jan Patrick Mongoven

Hi all ~

The Irish Heritage DNA Project is another valuable site. It can be accessed at http://homepage.eircom.net/~ihdp/ihdp/ and my (Mongoven - FTDNA #51271) Y-chromosome DNA markers can be compared to others of Irish ancestry. Perhaps you can find a name that fits with your own family tree. Given the paucity of Irish records, many more of us need to get involved, in order to help solve our genealogical mysteries. Surely somebody in the U.S., UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada, etc. has pictures, Bibles, notes, etc. that can help us trace our family.

Jan Patrick Mongoven

It is believed to have expanded throughout Europe as humans re-colonized after the last glacial maximum 10-12 thousand years ago. This lineage is also the haplogroup containing the Atlantic modal haplotype" (from the Family Tree DNA website).

In a few weeks I'll have my 37-marker test completed, which will provide much stronger linkages to a most recent common male ancestor. It will also be important as we ask the question: Was the Mungovan/Mongoven name Norman? Basque? Other??? I strongly urge any Mongoven (including variant spellings, of course) males to take part in this project.

Sincerely,
Jan Patrick Mongoven

Hi Jan
Glad to be able to help.
Judging by the lack of postings lately it seems that the rest of the Mungovan/Mongovan clan have either solved the puzzle of their origins and are keeping quiet or they are just resting. Lets hope the DNA project can inject some life back into things.
While it is important to share infomation via these boards they do have their limitations re exchanging copies of documents via attachments and/or personal information. I can still be contacted via my freeserve email which you should have from our exchanges of a few years ago or on this Mungovan board 13 Oct 1999 Mungovan Research.
Look foreward to hearing from you.
Chris

Hello, Chris ~

What a FABULOUS St. Patrick's Day gift you've given me with this information. I'm typing this at the library, but will write in much more detail to you when I can actually sit down and look at my maps in the comfort of my home. I also need to relay my DNA results to you!

Take care!
Jan Patrick Mongoven

Hi Jan
Have not replied until now as I wanted to go through as much of my collected notes etc as I could and take a fresh look before comparing with your most recent researches.
From my experience some information is invariably less useful than it at first appears. For example almost everyone finds that their research leads to a family from “Ennis” and then to a James Mungovan. But when you actually look in Ennis you find anyone but James.

It is clear that you have been most thorough in your investigation and I agree with your conclusion.
Furthermore I would say that Lismulbreeda is the townland they left, though not necesarilly one they might have resided in for many generations.

Lismulbreeda is about 6 miles from Ennis and is now in the parish of Clarecastle ( Killone + Clareabbey) . James and Catherine’s first son, Dennis Mongoven, married Cath Darcy. Cath’s parents were John Darcy and Ann Hayes and the parish records show that the parents of Susan Darcy, Cath’s sister who married John Mongoven, were John Darcy and Ann Hayes of Lismulbreeda.

This information came from Clare Heritage Centre in 1990 and was provided for John Thos Mongoven of Orlando who generously gave a copy to me.

While trawling through my files I found that one James Mongovan + family (7 total) from Corlea (Kilfinaghta parish 15 miles from Ennis) emigrated to Canada/America in 1840. Another James Mungovan + family (7 total) was evicted from the townland of Boulanameele in 1847.
While this information helps neither you nor me in our quest it may well help another Mungovan/Mongoven in theirs.

So to conclude for today may I wish all Mungovans a Happy St Patrick’s Day, Good Luck with your family history researches and keep keep posting the information on these boards.

Chris Mungovan

I did e-mail you also, which you can contact me by also. I do not have a great deal of info on the Mungovan side but imagine you could help me a lot. Joseph and Margaret were married on April 8, 1869 in Parnell. Margaret was born in Pittsburg, PA on September 29, 1851 and died February 13, 1931 in Cedar rapids, Linn County, Iowa. Children included: Michael J. Duffy, Lawrence Duffy, , Mary A, James Francis (my grandfather), Hanna, Katherine, Elizabeth, Patrick, Margaret Jane, Joseph Peter and Ellen. My line then goes on through the Duffys. fI you would like any info on them, I can send it to you. Lawrence M. and Johanna Sullivan were Margaret's parents. I only have a James and Margaret as children. But Mary sounds good to add (and anyone else you would like to contribute on) along with any info you care to share. My goal is to go back to the Irish roots of Michael and Lawrence along with the Burns family (Joseph's and Margaret's parents). That is the tricky part.

Katie

Re: Mungovan origins-Spanish connection

I don't know if the Mungovan family has a Spanish connection or not, but dismissing it because most Mongovans are fair/red haired and blue eyed has bothered me for some time.

My family tree includes Portuguese as well as Irish and let me tell you not all Portuguese, or Spaniards for that matter, are dark. There are just as many blue eyed blonds on my Portuguese side as on my Irish Mungovan half.

It is my understanding that a constable in Clare, one Boetius Mac Clancy killed any survivor of the armada that happened to make it to shore. This being the case, a fair haired Spaniard should have had a better chance of blending in with the locals and escaping the death on the beach that awaited his more typical dark haired countrymen.

Fair haired Portuguese/Spaniards are generally from the Northern areas of those countries. This would go along with the comment about the frequent occurence of the name James in Mungovan families and St. James having originated in Northern Spain.

No proofs implied, just food for thought.

--Shelby Green

Matthew~
Your question is a good one. Having been involved in my geneaogical search for over 3 years (I'm a relative newcomer by most standards!), I believe your family is the same as mine. I've seen the following variants in spelling, starting with my own: Mongoven, Mongovan, Mongovin, Mungovan, Mungavin, McGovern, Mogoven, Mongove, Mongroven, Mogovern, Mongvern, Mangoven, Mangovin, Mangovan, etc...I could go on and on...the US Census records are loaded with spelling variants depending on the different factors involved in census taking of the time (i.e. pronunciation by family member, spelling capability of census taker, etc.). Mugavin, coming from Ennis, County Clare, Ireland, is probably from the same family. Chris Mungovan is probably the expert in spelling variations. Have you contacted him? I wish you luck, Matthew. Sinerely, Jan Patrick Mongoven

Her sister was Margaret Mungovan, who I think married Joseph Duffy.
Their household (Duffy) lived next door to Martin Murphy, son of Mary Mungovan and Michael Murphy in York, Iowa Co., Iowa. Also living with Martin, was his uncle, James Mongoven. A few households down was a Lary Mongoven and Johanna Sullivan. I believe they are the parents of my Mary Mungovan, Margaret Mungovan and James Mungovan.
I had found that in Mary's will it shows that her sister is Margaret Mungovan. I have to get some more proof, but it looks like these people are siblings and their parents are correct.
What do you think, please let me know.
Sincerely,
Brian Rick.

Hi Maeve:

It is great to hear from you too. We are third cousins, the once removed part comes into play because our great great grandmothers were sisters.....I have been doing ggenealogy for about 20 years and I have acquired quite a bit of information in that time. I have various articles on the Mungovans. I look forward to sharing information with you, please e-mail me directly. at KGiusti639@aol.com Thanks, Kathleen
