James Marsh  (View posts) Posted: 5 Jan 2000 10:03PM GMT
My great grandfather was Michael Moungovan who was born in county claire, Ireland in 1840 he emigrated to the us and eventually ended up in point arena, California. I know for sure that he had two sons. My grandfather James Daniel Moungovan and Tom Moungovan. He was married to anna schultz from southern germany. I believe his name was spelled Mungovan when he came to america, but somehow got changed. I would appreciate any info on Michael and his family tree that anyone might have. even though my last name is marsh the moungovan name means alot to me because I was named after my grandfather.

I am one of those "Michael Mungovan"s

I think that Michael seems to be the favourite male name according to what I see... The Michael in Eden New York, I have talked with, but the rest of the Michaels do not return phonecalls.. Snooty??? Unknown... perhaps just too bust to care. My Dad was Robert Emit as was his dad b-4 him... they were from Ft. Wayne, Indiana... I understand that all Mungovans in this here USA are all related.
God bless you,

Cajun Mike (aka: Michael Sean Mungovan

More about Michael

My grandmother, Mary Moungovan Grant, discribed her father Michael as having red hair and the fairest skin she had ever seen. I'm not sure he ended up in Point Arena exactly. He was a logger at Duncan's Mills and his wife Anna ran a boarding house there. I have photos of him with the logs and oxen and at the boarding house in 1904 which I believe is shortly before he died. My Grandmother used to write to a cousin, Margaret Cahill in Ireland. This was in the early 70s and I'm not sure if this was a first cousin or not. Anyway, that address was Mrs. Patrick Cahill, Clonigulane, Kilmihil, County Clare, Ireland. If this sounds familiar to anyone please respond. Perhaps we can then see how "our" Michael fits into the family tree. She also mentioned cousins who served in WW1 who were a head taller than the other men in their outfit. They were 3 brothers and I heard once that they were triplets. If true, they shouldn't be hard to identify if anyone has information about the family in Ireland. Lastly, one of the descendants of Michael's yougest daughter Rose, compiled a fairly extensive family history in the late 60s. My mother had a copy, but it has been lost. You might see if any of the relatives you know can track down one of the copies. I seem to recall from that family history that Michael was about 20 years older than his wife Anna. This may help if you try to find more information about him through her.

Anna Schultz

James-- Here is some information about Anna. I believe she was born about 1865 and her full name was Anna Johanna Katrine Schultz. She had a younger brother named Johnny.

The story goes that her father came to the US first, but disappeared and was never heard from again. Anna's mother later married her husband's brother, Johann Schultz. He then became the family head and they came to the US as a family group. As I noted on the Moungovan page, Anna ran a boarding house in Duncan's Mills. There are Schultz's in the cemetary at Gualala. I haven't been there, but a cousin has. They are no doubt relatives. Anna died of kidney failure know then as Bright's disease.

James-
My parents are Tony Joseph Fernandes and Agnes Ruth Grant, and I don't have a family tree listed anywhere, just one on paper that I'm working on.

My e-mail address is willow14@micron.net

Are you interested in any photos of Michael Moungovan, Anna Schultz and James Daniel Moungovan? I got started with the family history through the photos; preserving them before they were lost and then I wanted to know who exactly these people were.

If your computer can receive the photos, I can sent the image for you to view. (would JPG be alright?)

I would need your e-mail address if you want to do this. Let me know.

In any case I will continue to let you know any more Moungovan information that I find out.

Shel

Shelby, My email is jmmarsh@frontiernet.net and I would be glad to have any photo's you may have of the family. As soon as i get a scanner I will be loading a bunch of family pictures on to my computer and I would be glad to share them with you. I thought you might be in the Grant family line. I have met several of the Grants at a School reunion in point arena in the late 70's. The one i remember the most is Art Grant(the Pilot) I will email you direct from now on.

Mungovan Family History

Hi Ho Michael:

Yes, indeed there are quite a few Mungovans, here in this fair city. Are you new to the area? The sect from which my family originated, and yours for that matter, as its ALL the same....are the Mungovans from Caherrush, County Clare, at the Western-most tip of the County. Ironically, I was just on the "phone," to Ireland, yesterday, speaking with the Mungovans that remain, still on the same land that we basically all originated from.

My backround is such that, my Great-Great-Great GrandFather was Thomas C. Mungovan, who came to the states in about 1845, at the age of 15, on a vessel owned by his Uncle....yours and my Great Uncle five times removed. He settled first in New Jersey, then in Lancaster, PA,....and then moved across the country to take up permanent residence, here in the Midwest, by way of Fort Wayne, Indiana. He met and married, had nine children, of whom one was my Great GrandFather, William Ellsworth Mungovan. William made his home Fort Wayne, for a good portion of his life, but later, all of his children, including my GrandFather, Joseph moved to Chicago. William, in turn had 5 sons and two daughters, one of whom was my GrandFather, Joseph A. Mungovan Sr. who was born in 1902. He, Joseph Sr, had 6 sons, of whom my Dad was the oldest, is still, for that matter....we live in the Western suburbs, and he, Joseph Jr. my Dad, had five daughters, of whom......I'm #4.

So, there's a bit of an abbreviated run-down. I've got lots of documentation. But, I'd love to know about your Great GrandFather John, as I'm sure he may be a cousin of Thomas'. Thomas may have been an Uncle or something, even, which would make John and our William, possibly first cousins, or at least of the same generation.

Would love to compare data, if you have it. In the interim, yes, you do have "lots," of family here. Again, would love to get in touch, if you'd like. E-mail me here, and I'll forward phone info.

Was actually just made aware yesterday, that a cousin of "ours," in Ireland, met with a very tragic and unfortunate death, on October 9, 2000. He was struck by a train while he was on a job. He was from all acounts, a wonderful person, gifted athletically, commendably talented, handsome, intelligent,an all around wonderful person....and his name, too, was Michael. I told his Father, Danny, that I'd keep him in my prayers, as well as his family. He left behind his devoted parents, and five siblings, who adore him.

His career as an athlete, his medals, and other awards for high-jump etc. for all around Ireland, are accessible via any Mungovan search, on the Internet. God protect and keep him, and hold him close. For those shared Mungovans....keep him in your prayers....and his folks' and brothers, and two sisters, as well. Thanks....

So, best wishes Michael, and I'll look forward to speaking with you.

Fondly,

Barb
