HI rrclark13,

You are indeed correct about the two brothers and two sisters. I am sister #2 (the youngest of 5, Terry is my oldest sibling and there were no other children born) and our family is from Delaware. I'll contact Terry and let him know that you wrote to him. I think he's been very busy recently.

You can contact me at bgansel9@gmail.com if interested.

Check out this web site for accurate, documented information about James.
http://home.earthlink.net/~scmullikin/
Concerning Patrick (my ancestor) -- he and James are NOT brothers and there is no interaction between them in the Maryland Archives in Annapolis. Patrick arrived in 1647. He acquired a tract of land on Leonard's Creek, on the Western Shore. He purchased this with James Ganion, Andrew Scott and Thomas Ayers. The name of the property was "Scotland." That's all I know. I don't know where Patrick originated but he was in the colony long before James arrived.

There are so many misconceptions out there about these two -- most are assumptions and not proven.

Tom Mullikin

Mr. Mullikin: Do you know if there was a Theodore Mullikin who served in, or was associated in any way, with the Civil War? The reason I ask is that I have a small (3") framed original medallion-type photo of Emma Mullikin, dressed in what appears to be mourning attire. The photo appears to be from the Civil War era or the years immediately following. On the back, written in pencil, is the following: "Emma Mullikin (Mrs. Theodore Mullikin)".
I would be happy to send you an image of this photo if you like.
Hi Nancy. It was a good surprise to hear from you! Yes, I would like whatever you have on Jeremiah's family. While I am not a Mullikin (at least not now, but maybe further research will add that name to my list of directo ancestors, I am a Sherlock. My great aunt kept some info on Jeremiah Mullikin. After his first wife died, he married Eleanora Sherlock (her sister was my direct ancestor). I wanted to verify that Jeremiah's first wife was Maria Osbourne???? also I have somewhere that a Jeremiah Mullikin married a Polly Suit?? I dn't know where that info came from though because a few years ago, I had a corrupted back-up disk which made a mess of my genealogy files. It took out names, and only left dates, for example. It did other weird things and I lost my sources.

So anything you may have on this famiy would be great. My great aunt said that Jeremiah and his first wife had two children, Benjamin and Alice. Is this correct? He and my relative, Elenora Sherlock had one daughter, Katherine Honora "Kate" Mullikin, born 1857. I'd be interested in anything you have to share, and of course I would be happy to share whatever I have that may help you! Ann in Oregon

My 2nd Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Mullikin Crandell she was married to James H. Crandell. Jeremiah left the land to my GG Grandmother Elizabeth, her husband James and her brother Benjamin Mullikin. My GG Grandfather own the Hotel in Upper Maroboro and the house he built on the land that Jeremiah left them. I have lots of information on the property and pictures of the house. Please contact me if you would like details.

Nancy

I have a copy of the book and it says that James and Patrick may have been related. However, there is no proof that they were related and there is no interaction between them in early colonial Maryland records. I've done extensive first hand research regarding Patrick and there is no evidence that he and James were brothers. Also, there is no evidence regarding Patrick's country of origin. He may have come from Scotland, but there's no evidence. Please use caution when making assumptions. Thank you.

Later, when the local Irish began to resent their being there, many emigrated to the US and elsewhere. I think that theory is mentioned in the Mullikin book by Ridlon.
Bonnie scurro@earthlink.net

Came across the postings. There is a site called RegardeBein.com There it will tell you everything you need to know. All decendents of James Gunnel are decendents to the Amuliganes. Amuligane is the derivitive of the word Mullikin. The reason they were in Ireland, because the " mullikins" were basically always on the losing side of the wars, so they got kicked out of scotland, moved to ireland for a couple generations, then moved back to scotland. but that site it completely dedicated to the family name. Hope this helos

I have decided my ggmother came from the cabbage patch and am looking for help to prove that wrong.
This is the accurate information I have based on the family paperwork I was given (mind you I was not given birth certs etc)
Annie Rebecca Mullikin (went by Annie, from what family is telling me her birth name was Annie as far as anyone knows)
b: 2 MAR 1865 I thave info that she was born in Montgomery Maryland, however I am not at all sure that is correct
m: 19 AUG 1885 Charles Wilbur Stephenson
d: 28 AUG 1944

She had 8 children
Ellen Mcniel Stephenson m Authur Eugene Simmons, the family owned or still owns a funeral home either in Clinton or Washington DC. Under the name of Simmons Funeral Home.
Orie May Stephenson
Charles Auliffe Stephenson
Mary Evelyn Stephenson
Joseph Godfrey Stephenson
Annie Virginia Stephenson
Ada Gertrude Stephenson
Dennis Wade Stephenson

Family tells me my grandmothers family lived in the Clinton area all their lives. When I mention Prince George's County, they say yes that is accurate information, I can't seem to get or find accurate informaiton on the census reports that show an "Annie" and there are so many Ann's or Anna's.
I also can't find any confirmation that the family changed the spelling of their name from Mullican to Mullikin. However I do have newspaper articles that do show Mullikin as the proper spelling of ANNIE'S name.
I am not at all sure where to head for a birth certificate for Annie, or how to even begin a search through Washington DC or Maryland as a proper starting point.
I would greatly appreciate any help and guidance anyone could give me.
Thanks

Re: Patrick Mullikin

Patrick Mullikin received tracts of land from Lord Calvert (not the king of England) for paying the passage for other settlers to the colony. Three separate documentary processes were required to authenticate grants of land -- Warrants, Certificates of Survey and Patents. All of this cost money. It would appear to me that Patrick had sufficient resources to not only bring others into the colony, but to also pay for the steps to acquire land. Calvert provided 50 acres for each immigrant. Patrick ultimately accumulated more than 1100 acres!

I have searched the records at Annapolis, Talbot County and a few other places looking for evidence related to Patrick. I can find no relationship between Patrick and James, other than the fact that they shared the same last name.

I recently participated in a DNA project comparing my DNA (I'm descended from Patrick) with descendants of James. While this is a very complicated process, and the study is still ongoing, simply stated, my DNA did not agree with those descended from James. The study is in the early stages, however. Patrick's family originated in Scotland, but his origins before coming to Maryland still remain a mystery.

I may not be from Missouri, but I say "prove it." The first property that Patrick acquired was 50 acres on the Western Shore, in Calvert County. He named it "Scotland." He continued to acquire more land and made money selling most of it. He settled on the Eastern Shore on a plantation he named "Patrick's Plains." I've been there: the original plantation buildings have not been located and the plantation divided into large, very expensive estates.

Your emails on
Ancestry.com mention that you have a very old atlas that show land grants. You also mention that Patrick (and James) lived in London, England, Ireland, and then Scotland. I am highly interested in this history. Would you consider sending a copy of this information to me? I would be thrilled and very appreciative. Thank you.
-Julie

The 1500 info is from this geneology site:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mullikine/

They surmise from the book, "The Mullikins of Maryland" that there is a relation to both James and Patrick. Patrick being the poorer relation and most likely the Patrick we are related to. The Laird of Blackmyre (Amuligane) part may be stretching it... but could be plausible? I am more interested in why Patrick's family was in Ireland for a few generations.

Joan:

I am also a Mullikin and as children, we spent a lot of time on the Eastern Shore, Maryland. That was our Annual Family Reunion spot, after we visited the family grave sites at the Greenboro Cemetery, Route 440. Then we would go on to Cousin Rumsie Mullikin & Beanie's Farm for a day of reuniting and laughter beyond belief. However, there was only one-outside convenience spot that occasionally got turned over. Of course, not one Mullikin would admit doing so. R. Mullikin Clark

My father-in-law, Manson Patrick Mullikin II lived in Racine, WI for about 30 years, ending in about the mid 1990's when he moved to Seattle. He was referenced in an earlier reply by my stepson, mpmIV. Manson P. II was the son of Manson P. I, who was son of Alva, son of William P. Alva was in the Civil War and served under a General Manson and so admired him that he named his son Manson. At least that's how the story goes. We have a bible with some dates and location info. Manson P.II was born in Montana on an Indian Reservation when his dad was working for the railroad. I think that was 1921. His second wife still resides in Seattle and knows lots of Mullikin lore. (She was married to one of his cousins first). Anyone please feel free to contact me via email if you're interested in what other info we have. We have old photos too.

I too, am a Horstead, also related to Mullikin's of Eastern Shore Maryland, and I currently have an extensive Mullikin family tree, so far back to early 1500's.

I have to admit, I am astonished to find another Horstead family, in relationship to the Mullikins.

I do know that my grandfathers brother (reginald Horstead) came to New York in early 1910s, and then went to Canada, where we lost track of him.

But Horstead is my fathers side of the family, while Mullikin relations are from my mothers side.

Please reply!
