Rose Muffoletto from Cefalu

I am trying to locate info on a family from Cefalu. My great grandfather was listed on his wedding as Samuel Radice Muffoletto, mother Rose Muffoletto & father unknown. This was Feb 1, 1891. They later came to Baltimore using other names. He arrived in 1898 as Samuele Radice Esposito and she & 1st 3 kids traveled in 1900. She used her maiden name as usual but kids were listed as Radice for last name. After arriving in Baltimore he began using the name of Michael Sanfilipo. It has always been assumed by the family that he knew his father's name but couldn't use it while in Cefalu.

Mary Sanphilipo-Ward

Samuele/Michael was born Aug 25 1864 but I have not found a birth for him yet. All help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, I've kind of gotten away from ancestry.com....I hired a geneologist that specializes in Sicily and she has gathered me tons of information, including copies of birth, death and marriage certificates dating back to the early 1800's.....If you can give me any more information, birthdates, death dates, etc. from any Muffoletto's, I may be able to pin-point the branch on our tree, which stretches some six feet wide when printed out.....my personal e-mail is Fanyak@aol.com......What part of the country do you live?.......Sam Muffoletto

Hello I know this is long overdue but this is the first I've seen this group.
First, I just wanted to say that women travel under their maiden names. That should give you a bonus. ;-)
Next, I am from a Muffoletto line from Cefalu but have not found much. My great-grandfather's (Michael Sanfilipo also known as Samuele Radical Muffoletto and Samuele Radice Esposito) marriage record (Feb 1, 1891) lists his mother as Rosa Muffoletto of Cefalu. The father is listed as unknown but after Michael came to America (1898), he claimed that Joseph Sanfilipo was his father.

Hi Sara,

I got the information off a surname map lookup. So it could be that for some reason your branch of the muffoletto's failed to be listed anywhere to make the map. Given is a relatively uncommon surname, it is likely that missing a branch or two of the name might lead to hugh variation in possible locations of orgin. I also suspect that marital customs and small towns moved the families back and forth, Cefalu being one of the magnets, like Valledolmo.

Dale David West

If I wouldn't be so sure when you say that 99.9% of the Muffolettos are from Cefalù and that there are some who live in Termini. In Termini there are hardly any.I'm a Muffoletto and my father was from Gratteri and that is where most of the Muffoletto's come from. They immigrated to Cefalù because in Gratteri there was nothing to offer. And there are many other Muffoletto's who live in Campofelice.
Hi DonnaMarie,

As with 99.9% of all Muffoletto's they came from Cefalu and like many not only started out in Western NY, but stayed in the area. The other 0.1% is mostly from Termini Imerese (but I even they were originally from Cefalu). It seems to me that I mapped out (speculated) someplace the various routes they took from Cefalu, but if you have some data, then I can rethink some of this. I feel a new burst of research coming on. In any event, the place of origin doesn't help much in sorting the Muffoletto's other than to say we are clearly ALL closely related (moreso than the rest of the island :)) coming from the same small town . I have the trees scattered about this site and others about the net. Look for Pasquale Muffoletto and Rosa Pulvino and you should come up with lots of hits. I have even some of my library research and such enshrined of halls of the family trees at ancestry.com. I myself refuse to submit a GED. (Hopefully you will ask me why....hint hint) :)

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. There are a few changes in the Pasquale tree. It is just so long, I hate to repeat it here unless you ask me to (hint hint). though I suppose I could email it. Well, enough of being a pain.
thanks in advance...
Dale

Hi Sam,
At some point along the way my name became Mike Inglisia, supposedly temporarily, through some email access I got and it just seems to appear in various places even though it is still me, Dale David West. In any event, yes, at this point I tend to agree about the widower issue. I think it was a second marriage for BOTH of them and that they BOTH had prior children that need accounting for. I seem to have addressed this somewhere on these pages. I am sure it will come back along the wheel with a few more bits of data.

Whether we like it or not, I think all of us Muffolettos are related.....back to Cefalu.....The earliest Muffoletto's I have detected are Antonio Muffolett, who married Mario Catalano (early 1800's) , who had at least one child, maria Muffoletto (born Sept. 22, 1835 in Termini, Sicily...........and Guiseppe Muffoletto, who married Stefano Culotta(early 1800's)....those two's children were Maria Grazia Muffoletto (born April 18, 1825), Salvadore Filippo Muffoletto (born June 2, 1823) and Luigi Antonio Muffoletto, born Jan 10, 1828.........

So I started gathering data on a few more lines in the hopes of putting the tree together of this family that scattered its branches to the winds.

Dale

Hey Mike......Alot of which you stated I can verify....My great-grandmother was Anna Culotta (2) and I thought her three childresn Mary (my grandmother), Sam and Rose were indeed her step-children....You have her date of birth correct (May 24, 1864), but it's uncertain if she was born in Cefalu or Buffato.....It could be that she went to Cefalu to retrieve my great-grandfather's (Giuseppe) three kids from a previous marriage...Maybe he was widower........I'm going to have sit down and carefully read everthing you sent....thanks again....until later, Sam

Hello. Giuseppe Muffoletto and Anna LaManna had these children. Not sure really if Giuseppe had Girolama with another woman and brought her to USA. I have spoken to the daughter of Antonio Muffoletto (which she doesnt know anything of her fathers past or the grandfather) but she did tell me that Salvatore came with his father Giuseppe first and then after 1 year sent for the rest of his family. It seems that the Muffoletto family wasnt a close family. I have written to many of them and no response at all from most.Giuseppe is buried in Chicago as well as his wife Anna Muffoletto.
Are you researching this family and what relation are you? Cosima Rose Muffoletto was my great grandmother married to Pietro Caracciolo ( Caracci)

Yes, the 190 Buffalo City Directory shows both a Joseph Muffoletto (carpenter) renting @ 93 Ash and also a Salvatore Moffleto (clerk) renting 93 Ash as well. Since I did not see them before or after at this address, I figured that they were amoung those that moved south either Baton Rouge or Baltimore or joined those already in Chicago area. If we could got someone people in those cities looking up the names in the directories we could get a very good picture of who is probably related to whom.

In 1921 Buffalo City Directory we have two clusters of Muffoletto's

Joseph (barber), Peter (barber) and Vincent (clerk) rent @ 354 Front Ave. Peter has a brother Samuel (barber) rents @ 50 Minnnesota and they own a barber shop @ 349 Michigan called the Muffoleto Brothers. Near them lives Charles (barber) renting 152 Front Ave.

Salvatore (barber) and Vincent rent 1081 Genesee. They are near Joesph (barber) that has a shop @ 1519 Genesee and rents 340 Koons. Nearer the former is Nicholas (barber) renting 1067 Genesee.

This pattern changed such that by 1931 none of the Muffolettos lived on Front, but twice as many lived on Genesee. Some of the moves seem to be accounted for by job changes (not so many barbers) and marriages, but some names also seem to disappear as the early two on Ash did.

Compare this with the 1900 Mofelletto group who all lived on Broadway. Josephine, Peter (barber), salvatore (barber) and Rosa all rent @ 356 Broadway and the barber shop is on 188 Broadway.

The addresses are so taunting because my cousins all lived around these addresses, but these Muffolettos are not linked up. For that matter either are the "cousins." I should say the last names of my cousins all seemed to follow similar address patterns. The Pulvinos, Mogaveros, Mordenos, Zrenners and Parlatos.
:(

Dale David West

Hi,

I had no idea that there were Buffalo Muffoletto's. My family settled in Baltimore's Little Italy and I knew of some in New Orleans. My grandfather Carmelo Guiseppe Muffoletto immigrated to America from Cefalu when he was a boy, probably in the early 1900's. He was a barber. His father was a shoemaker, not sure on his name, Guillermo? There are still quite alot of Muffoletto's in the Maryland area. Do you know of any connections between the families in all 3 cities.

Hoping to get some information on the Muffolettos. My great grandmother was Cosma Rose Muffoletto. Her father was Joseph Muffoletto and mother was Anna LaManna. They hada few children, all born in Cefalu, Sicily. Francesco, Salvatore, Antonio, Anna and Cosma Rose Muffoletto. I do know that one of the nephews who was born in MD was living in Chicago with her ( Rose) at the age of 16. Hoping to connect them. Also........some went to Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Salvatore Muffoletto died in Los Angelos, Calif. but havent been able to get his family information as to whom he was married to and his children. Please respond to me at
Donnamarieboyer@aol.com

Donnamarie

Nothing new on the "Muffoletto" from Buffalo horizon, but I did purchase recently on e-bay a neat old (1888-1907) log, diary and many newspaper clippings (marriages, deaths, etc.) from a grocery-store owner Louis Vetter of Hickory Street in Buffalo.....many names are listed, but haven't found a Muffoletto notation yet........This book however, could be of use for some other Buffalo-related genealogist.......
