Mounce of Wayne County Kentucky

I am interested in knowing more about the Mounce families of Wayne county and how or if they connect to the Mounce families of Pulaski county. I come across several Mounce marriages in Pulaski county but the Mounces are from Wayne and I can't seem to connect them to the Pulaski Mounce families.

I am wondering if John Marion Mounce is my Grandfather. I was always told his name was Marion. If this is the same person, he was married to my Grandmother and lived in Illinois. When he was away at WWI, she divorced him. He was born in Oklahoma on a reservation, his Mother being Native American. I'm looking at the Family Search Index this is the only Marion Mounce who served in the war and lived in Illinois.

Please respond.
Jan Barrett

Elane - We have corresponded in the past. I am also descended from Milton Squires and Elizabeth Jane Mounce. They are my great-great-grandparents. You said that you were descended from Jacob S Rauch and Emeline Squires. I have not been able to find them in the 1930 census but did find them in Oregon at the time of the 1920 census. Do you happen to have an obituary for either Jacob or Emeline?
I have searched at different times for the grave for Smith Mounce [James Smith Mounce] but have not had any success. I will get in touch with the City Hall in Center Point and see if they have any record of his burial in the Center Point Cemetery.
Keep in touch -

You're correct about there being more than one Smith Mounts. The Smith Mounts you referred to being born in Fairfield, Ohio is not of the Smith Mountses of Indiana. My James Smith Mounts, Sr. and son, James Smith Mounts, Jr. lived in Owensville, Gibson County, Indiana. Sr. is laid to rest on the homestead farm along with his wife and children. The cemetery has been almost totally destroyed as the person that now owns the farm raises beans and then turns his cattle louse. This may also occurred also by previous owners. I was sickened when taken there in 2003 by a fourth cousin who lives in LaFayette, Indiana and saw how the gravemarkers were laying on the ground and some were broken and others were either completely covered by dirt or part of the stone only buried in dirt. The present owners will not give permission to go to the cemetery; which is not enclosed in any type of enclosure.

Henry Mounts
San Diego, CA
1967 to now
and hope for many
more years [now 82 +]

Her father was Lafayette Junior, grandfather Lafayette Sr, son of Isaac and Priscilla. We would like to get any further info we can-we have a tree my mother has worked on for years but we lack many citations and the name of the earliest Mounce and how and when they came-help?-Marsha

We are also related to Isaac Mounce-he came here to Lewiston, Idaho to settle on farm land south of town-his sons, one of whom was Lafayette Mounce, is my great grandfather-my mother, Jean Elizabeth Mounce Buchanan is the daughter of Lafayette Mounce Junior. My sister, Cheryl Buchanan-Petty is the principle researcher in our family-we went to Cedar Rapids to one of the last Mounce reunions about 20 years ago and met Robert Mounce, among others. we saw the farmhouse Isaac came west from and graves in an old graveyard in someone's field-we would love to have any information you have and can send you a copy of what we have so far-we still don't know when the Mounces came to this country, how, and when-Help?-Marsha B

I received the Mounce family information from my former sister-in-law whose mother was a Mounce. This family was from Kingsbury. My sister-in-law's mother's name was Millie Mounce Stansbury. Since this is not my direct family, I can only rely on information received. If you would like, I can contact my sister-in-law and ask if this is the same person.

I am responding to your post of 2001 on the Mounce family message board. You requested info on the family of John Mounce who married Rachel Wade. John and Rachel had a son,Joseph Mounce, who married 1)Nancy Roberts and 2)Elizabeth Moody. A daughter of Joseph Mounce and Nancy Roberts was Lucinda Emetine Mounce. Lucinda married Jacob Caylor of Wayne Co.,Ky in 1859. Jacob Caylor was the brother of my great grandfather Pleasant Caylor. Jacob and Lucinda eventually settled and raised a family in Sumner Co.,Kansas. I was able to track down one of Jacob and Lucinda's children and her descendants all the way to today. Unfortunately, I have had little success with locating any other descendants of Jacob and Lucinda through their other children and so I am hoping that maybe you could shed some light on this. I thank you.

George Caylor

My dad was raised in Oshawa, I think that his father Ross was from there. My father was born in 1931, so his father would have been born in the earlier 1900's.

Here is what I have:

Smith Mounce (b 1842 Fairfield Ohio, d 1888 Ohio) was married to Clarissa Shaw (b 1842)

Parents: John W S Mounce (b 1786 KY d 1878 OH)
Sarah Cave (b 1796)

After this I have a conflict, some records show John W as the son of John M Mounts and Mary Lydia Smith but both of them passed away 5 and 7 years respectively before John was even born. Just a slight issue. If you can offer any assistance it would be greatly appreciated.

Christopher Henderson

I have been trying to find someone from the Mounce family that might know of Sarah Blight who married Dick Nethercott of Mitchell, Ontario.

My great great grandmother was Mary Richards who married John Blight in Devon, England in 1856. Her 2 sisters, Lucy and Sarah came to Canada. Lucy Richards married John Mounce in 1864 in Devon England. They were living in Perth County at the time of the birth of their son Albert Edward Mounce (father of Ross Mounce)in 1869.

John Mounce and his wife Lucy Richards are found living in Township of Darlington, Durham county in 1871 census, and in the 1881 census the Mounce family is residing in Oshawa. John Mounce was a blacksmith.

By 1910 John Mounce and his wife Lucy Richards were living in Toronto, and in 1909 my great great aunt Sarah Ann Blight (daughter of Mary Richards and John Blight) immigrated from Devon to Toronto, living near them. After Lucy's Mounce's death in 1913, Sarah Blight moved to Perth County near other Devon folk. My grandmother Ada Glover 1897-1946 immigrated from Devon in 1913 and came to live near her Aunt Sarah.

I have seen postcards that refer to Lucy (Richards) Mounce as aunt, and Albert Edward Mounce (of Oshawa) as dear cousin from Sarah.

Albert Mounce and Martha Agnes Byam were married in 1890 in Whitby, ON. Murin Ross Mounce was born Nov 27 1902 to Albert and Martha. Other children were Ernest Albert, William John, Ruby Lillian, Aubrey R. E., and Doris Madeline.

Please email me at
mail_for_heather@yahoo.ca

Would you happen to know where Elizabeth is buried, I read that it is Smith co KS in Stuart Cemetery and that she died sometime in 1880. I have read that she went to Kansas but never found her on a 1880 census. Also do you know why Smith and Elizabeth separated (that is how it sounded by reading Smith's will), maybe it was because they were getting older. In 1870 she is living with a Granddaughter and he is living with his son Isaac in 1860. I haven't found Elizabeth on an 1860 census. Do you happen to know where Smith Mounce is buried? I have his death date 2-19-1864. Hope this is not to many questions! :)

Re: Talladega, AL to Bienville, LA Mounce/Baker

My greatgrandmother was Lucinda Erp Mounce. I have tried to find information on her mother's lineage. Her mother was Mahala Hargis. Mahala's parents were Lucinda Baker and Napoleon Hargis. Is anyone familiar with this part of the family? Lucinda Erp married John Riley Mounce. They lived in Somerset, KY, however, I believe Mahala Hargis may have been born in Tennessee and that her parents may have been further south. I also believe that one or both of them may be Cherokee.
