Trying to find death of Frederick. Last official mention of him was on a birth certificate 1914 St Austell, Cornwall. He also went by Frederick Charles Stevens, profession was Master/Journeyman Tailor.

There is a brief mention of a Father sending a parcel from South Devon Hospital Plymouth 1921 to a son in a Barnardo's Home, but we are unsure if it was the above or the son's stepfather.

Many thanks in advance.

John Mortimore Misinformation

Hi all!

I have noticed that A LOT of people have the wrong information about John (Jonathan) Mortimer/Mortimore who emigrated to Bedford County Pennsylvania in the late 1700s and died in Redbank Twp in 1820. The popular thought is that he emigrated in 1809 and became a citizen in 1813-1814. Not so. The Mortimers are first on record in Bedford County in 1774. I think they arrived in 1772 as I have one of John's brothers (James) on record. Both, plus their brother Thomas, served in the Rev. War.

John and family moved to Western PA in about 1803. They settled in Redbank Twp, often seen as Toby, Catfish Run, etc.

If anyone has info on the fam before John, I'd love to see it....

Thanks!
Pamela Mortimer

Fred married a french lady in 1940 in london left her and took up with blanche, they had a son in 1948 born in Croydon all 3 emmigrated to Australia in 1955 and are believed to have lived in Littlehampton from 1950-1955. Fred was an engineer very good with engines, they would also have had to marry to emmigrate but can find no trace of that.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Seems unlikely that your William was the one who married Hester Freeman. If William was born in 1669 he would have been 71 when his daughter Mary was born in Nov 1740 and 91 at the time of his death at Ixhill, Oakley, in 1760. While William's year of birth is uncertain, we did find his will dated 27 Aug 1760, which was how we identified his off-spring.

Vivian Kahn, Oakland, CA

A belated resonse to your message of 23 Jan. I found record of William's marriage to Hester FREEMAN of Arncott in an FHL film of transcribed Oxfordshire marriages 1538-1754 in the Oxford Local Studies Library. It says that William and Hester were married 27 Dec 1714 in St. John the Baptist. No info on his parents. Although I haven't found records to prove it, I think that William might be from Brill, Buckinghamshire, where name shows up in parish records from the late 17th century. My husband Larry Mortimer is a 5G grandson of William and his second wife Ann through their son Michael (1733-1805). Do you have any info on this line?

Vivian Kahn, Oakland, CA

Yes I think you are in luck. There are a couple of trees matching yours and one of them at least seems to go back to an Elias Mortimore born 1796 son of John and Mary at Gidleigh, Devon and later lived at Walkhampton, Devon.
The dna project that I help with is with familytree dna and we have three Mortimer/Mortimore families originating in Devon who have joined with male members sending in mouth swab samples. So far the mini dna results show that these three families are not closely related but your Mortimore family might match one of them. Please let me know if you are interested. Regards - David

Thank you so much for that information that will certainly help fill in the gaps. Would you be will to send me information on the following generations? Since most are probably living I would prefer to do that privately. I put no information regarding the living on any website (other than my own immediate family), it is only for personal use. If you are willing to share please e-mail me privately.

j c b u k e r @ g m a i l . c o m (please removed the spaces). Thanks so much for your help, Jan.
P.S. Let me know if there is any information I can pass along to you.

If you wouldn't mind I would appreciate it a lot if you would pass along what you have so that I can fill in my blanks. If there is anything I can provide you with I will be happy to do so.
Thank you so much for replying to me.

Hi,

I'm descended from a different branch of the Devon Mortimores. I just want to point out that William Mortimore b 1773 in Silverton did NOT marry Elizabeth Webb.

The Elizabeth Webb/William Mortimore couple who married in 1800 in Exeter are my GGGG-grandparents, and he was from Zeal Monachorum NOT Silverton. I can confirm the link because their son John named his eldest child "Thomas Webb Mortimore" after his mother's maiden name.

As far as I can tell, another poster on this thread is correct and your Silverton William married Elizabeth (or Betty) Dilling.

I have further confirmation of this on census entries, please contact me if you need further info

Alix

Mortimores of Devon (again)

Hi all

This is my once a decade pitch for Mortimer/ore cousins. Sooner or later someone is bound to find the following names familiar:

From the top, my G-grandfather Percival George Mortimer was born in 1882 in Melbourne Australia and was killed in WW1 in 1914.

His father was George Stephen Mortimore, b 1830 in Exeter, Devon, who emigrated to Australia about 1865 and married Isabel Anderson in Sydney in 1877. Their other children were Lilian Isabel (b 1880), Reginald James (b 1883), Rubina Evelyn (b 1885), Isabel Sarah (known as Sadie, b 1889). George Stephen Mortimore was a brushmaker and died in Melbourne in 1897.

His father was John Mortimore, born 1800 in Exeter, and married Dorothy Wall in 1823. Their other children were Thomas Webb (b 1823), John (b 1826), William Henry (b 1834), Edward (b 1838) and Elizabeth Dorothy (b 1840). John's wife Dorothy died in 1843, and he remarried in 1845 to Melony Ellard, with whom he had another son Charles (born 1845). John was a brushmaker, and probably had a shop on Paul Street in Exeter in the mid-nineteenth century. He died in Exeter in 1871.

His father was William Mortimore, born 1777 in Zeal Monachorum, Devon, who married Elizabeth Webb in Exeter in 1800. Their other children were William (b 1803) and Thomas (b 1807). William was a servant and died in Exeter in 1819.

His father was another William Mortimore, born about 1750 somewhere in Devon as yet unknown. He married Frances Crispin in Zeal Monachorum in 1774. Their other surviving children were John (1775-1858), Mary (b 1783), Robert (1785-1866), Betty (b 1788) and William known as Thomas (b 1795). William Senior died in North Tawton in 1818.

Some of these siblings and their descendants moved to Sidmouth, Colebrooke and Plymouth, as well as further afield. Others I haven't traced, so if anything here looks like it matches something from your tree, get in touch!

Kind regards
Alix Mortimer

Hi

Just a shot in the dark, but I'm researching the Mortimores of Devon, and I've seen the name "Elias Mortimore" running in a family of farmers based around the southern half of Dartmoor (plug it into the IGI or Ancestry.com and you get a sprinkling of them around places like Walkhampton, Chagford and North Bovey). Both names are reasonably unusual, so it might be worth bearing in mind for when you're done with the US bit of the tree. Maybe your William's father emigrated to Ohio from that area?

All best
Alix Mortimer

Dear Vivian

The trouble is that there are too many Williams floating around the area to be able to identify him with any certainty. I like to think that he may have been the William from my line who was baptized at Duns Tew,Oxon., St. Mary Magdalen, on 30 March 1669, but he would have been 45 at marriage if it was to Hester Freeman. This William, his parents (Thomas & Beatrice, my seventh great grandparents) and siblings moved to Stratton Audley, Oxon,, which is where Thomas had been born and where I can trace them back to about 1565. Members of the family were sometimes recorded under the alias of Baker and I have found another branch which I so far haven't been able to connect, at Hardwick (then known as Hardwick Audley), Oxon. This branch goes back to about 1480. Arncott and Hardwick are both within four miles of Stratton Audley.

Kind regards

Keith

Elias is my husband's great grandfather. He was born in Ohio and on a previous record it indicates that his father is Wm Mortimore and his mother Polly Boles; but I have hit a dead end with both of these names matching my Mortimore family tree. I have considerable information on Cora Blanche Westenhaver whom he married, but am wanting to trace the Mortimore line. Elias' youngest son, Max is my husband's grandfather. He grew up in Brighton, Iowa. I do know that Elias and Blanche were married in Belmont County, Ohio and that they were both born in Ohio. I believe both of his parents were born in Ohio as well, based on a census record. ANY information that anyone can lend is greatly appreciated!

My Dad,(Bertie Keith) was Sam's grat-great grandson, he died in 2009 aged 93. My great uncle Percy Mortimer died aged nearly 101, so the Mort's are long livers.

Hope to hear from you in the future. I have another cousin (by marriage who has spent years tracing the Morts and she has gone back to 1100 odd.
Bessie's name was Elizabeth Louisa, although even her children thought it was Bessie Elizabeth(on her headstone).

From my mother's side, Surname, Jane; her father Frederick Jane, Commissioned Gunner WW2 married Marie Louise Mortimore in 1922; Marie is the daughter of Earnest James Mortimore (bn 1872) a tailor, original working in Exeter, moved to Plymouth for financial reasons.

Earnest was the son of Charles(1845)and Harriet Salter Fenwick (1844) whose father was a Master tailor. Charles was the Son of John and Melony, when then they were married she is listed as a servant, his father, William is also listed as a servant. Are you sure that William died in 1818 or was that William's father??

Earnest James had one son, Horace who my grandmother said was the black sheep of the family- possible because of a divorce. Earnest was married to Sara Louise Hutchison (1874,
Exeter).
Hello Peter and other Mortimer/Mortimore/Mortymer researchers,
I've traced back to 16th cent Mortymers in central Devon (sheep farming) and think they moved closer to Exeter and became involved in manufacture eg felt-making ( John Mortymore of Exeter St. Sidwell, many children including our possible first-known ROBERT b 1592. Robert began a new line centered in Eastbourne Sussex. My Windows Live entries are at http://mortimergenealogy.spaces.live.com/blog/ . See my optusnet web site link (Jan), and Mortymer names on 16th.cent Subsidy Rolls in blog entries for Feb, March.
Are these name variations significant -? - am curious what other researchers have found out. Have Devon Worthy wills CD if you want a look-up, and am involved in familydna testing, awaiting results shortly.
Hello Pete - I can see Elias Mortimore in the census returns living at Walkhampton and he is part of the farming community. There is no Alias or Elias mentioned in any of the wills that I have but this does not mean to say there are not other Mortimore wills that might mention him as there are several more Mortimer / Mortimore wills in the area which I have not seen. If you would like to make direct contact my email address is Lodgefarmhouse@aol.com
regards David
