The name Morelock is German. Initially I thought it was Irish, but more research indicates German decent. My mother's maiden name is Heim, which is also notoriously German. Her father however, was Irish. My grandmother's maiden name was Compton which is Irish as well.

Thank you so much for your reply. We are looking for pictures of those buried there. We also are trying to locate documentation (it would be EARLY, I know) of marriages for Rufus and Nellie and Thomas Porter's marriage. We don't have a lot of documentation on the deaths either as they are recent enough we haven't pursued the more recent death records. Would love to have an obituary on Jerry Bob Billington as well.

Any help you can give is greatly appreciated. We are getting many of the blanks for the 484 graves filled in.

Thanks for your help. --Eva

You are correct about the first marriage info except his name true name is John Harvey Morelock, but he went by Harvey. The second marriage date I'm confused with, because that's around the time he would have been living with Cleve's mother. Then I saw the Chancery record and got more confused. Harvey had dropped off the face of the earth with Mandy Davis (Cleve's mom)after Cleve was born until I saw the divorce record. Back then it was better to be thought of as a widow than a divorcee, so I believe Emoline lied to the census taker on that issue. I do have some correspondence from Rosa Morrison about the Morrison family and maybe from others mentioning Emoline. I would be most interested in sharing info.

This helps a lot in that it rules out Maude and your Cleve although distantly related to me anyway. So to correct my query, I am looking for Cleveland (Cleve)Davis Morelock who at 10 yrs old was in servitude to the Barnards. I know for fact he did father two children, one named Alverna and a son. So it appears he was married at least twice. I know for fact his last wife's name was Annie. I have letters from them to my g-grandmother, Martha Rachel Ellen Morelock Bailey (aka: Ellen:Ella) who is his half sister. They share a father, John Harvey Morelock who married Margaret Emoline Morrison. But I believe the Chancery records show they divorced. It is rumored he married Cleve's mother, but I can't seem to find that record. Can anyone help with that?

Do you know what happened to Maud and Woodroe? Cleve married a 2nd time and had 2 children from her. I believe and I could be wrong, she died and left the children with her family in Kentucky where they were born. Cleve then married wife #3 Anne (?).
Regarding Cleve's mother's name I have found only heresay about her name. Does someone have or know of documents to her identity? I know when he was 10 he was living as a servant to the Barnards.Harvey and Amanda were not to be found.

Cleve Morelock

Cleve was 1/2 bro to my g-grandmother, Rachel Martha Ellen Morelock. He was b 1890. Their father John Harvey Morelock is a road block for me. He just fell of the earth. I recently acquired old letters from various family members of Ellen's. Some of which are from Cleve and his wife Annie. Cleve died in March 1968. What happened to Annie? Cleve's letter in 1944 mentions he was married twice before and that he has 2 children from his 2nd wife. Willie age 17 still lives in KY and Alberta age 18 is living with Cleve and his 3rd wife who is age 21. Does anyone have info leading to his decendants so I can contact them? They might have a clue as to Cleve's mother's real name and what happened to his parents.

Not sure if this helps but....
I recently found an entry for marriage for Harvey (Yancy?? It's hard to read)Morelock & Emmeline Morrison 2 June 1876.This would fit better with the birthdates of SarahT, Rachel Martha Ellen ,etc.
I also found the divorce entry in the chancery records for 1898.
To confuse matters further I found a marriage record for 1891 for John Harvey morelock & Emmeline Morrison for 1891.
In the 1900 & 1910 census Emmoline Morelock is listed as a widow.
Another Morelock researcher lists John Harvey Morelock as dying in 1948. But i'm still not convinced it's him. in the obituary there is no mention of "previous family". Although the dates could fit.I also have the obituary of Sarah T which mentions Cleve and Rachel Martha Ellen.
Any mention in your letters of Emmoline? I am descended from her sister Hannah.

Hmm. You are probably right about the "widow" issue. I found the second marriage date confusing as well, especially as it pops up on some family trees(even though Amanda is listed as his 2nd wife with Cleve's birthdate as 1890.) Then I ran across the document myself(could be a mis-transcription or two people with the same names.
Could you e mail me directly. That way I can send you what I have. I would be happy to share info and pool our resources.
I would love any information on the Morrison side of the family ...especially Hannah, Emoline's sister.
I know that Rosa also corresponded with My Aunt Claire in California, but sadly I don't have access to it.
natridjr at yahoo dot com
Natalie

Many are buried at the Morelock Cemetery. My mother was a Morelock. My grandmother was an Alger, and her mother was a Pickins.
I'm not sure which Cleve Morelock you're looking for but,the Cleve Morelock who married Maude Morelock(daughter of John Harvey and Mary Ellen Morelock)was the son of Marion Morelock and Hannah Light. Maude was Cleve's first wife. They had Woodrow, Cleve (Gib), Hester and Annie. When Maude died in 1926, Cleve married Emma Morelock, the daughter of Yancy and Francis Morelock. They had Grover Cleveland, Esther, Beulah and Jack.
This is my family. I hope the info helps.

Thanks for your email. We have currently identified 474 known or suspected burials. We are trying to get copies of births (certificates or newspaper articles), marriages (certificates or newspaper articles), deaths (certificates or newspaper articles), obituaries, military and land records. Have most of the census records for them. We are also interested in copies of pictures of them. Our 3-ring binders now number 9 (2") binders. Eventually this information will be available in the local Adair County historial society. I will look to see if I can identify your relatives(or you can make it easy on me and tell me who they are!) and then email you about what we have and would LOVE to get! Since this is an active cemetery, the job will never be finished.

For Elbert, I have birth date, marriage date (would like proof), death date & certificate, have obituary, grave picture, need probate records, have some land records and census records for 1880-1920. Because he is related, we also have much more on the Bachman family.

The newspaper posting was from the historic newspaper collection of the GETTYSBURG COMPILER, Gettysburg, PA 11 Sep 1915. As you stated, the date in the newspaper would indicate a date of birth of 1837. The 1870 census for Maryland, Carroll Co., HH506 Family 1532 for MORELOCK, Saml and Susanna also indicates a birth date of 1837 and the 1900 US Cenus for Maryland, Carroll Co., Westminster, HH82 Family 83 states MORELOCK, Samuel P. was born in July 1837. Wife Susanna was born Jun 1832. I have in my notes that the newspaper article may not be for my Samuel P. MORELOCK, but I posted the article for other researchers to respond as you have done. This is all the information I have.
