Hi Christine,
I can completely understand your concerns about the ydna testing. I did the same thing for years!! I had more questions than you can shake a stick at before I finally asked my father who was the Last of our Moody line that I had access to at least. There are/were very few males on our side of the family tree and the others I am not in contact with as they are all out of state.
Anyway, the testing is completely safe and easy.
Our group is through FTDNA (see the LINK that -deltamike- gave on his reply to this very thread and that will get you in touch with our Administrator Bob Moody who can answer all of your questions....he is Very nice and helpful, but travels so it may take him a few days to get back to you. Just put something about Moody Ydna questions in your Subject line and he will reply back).
Anyway, it sounds like you are in the same situation that I was in several years back. Our male MOODY line was diminishing rapidly and I wanted to know once and for all which branch our line came from.
Three or more different times I was absolutely convinced from Genealogical research and I mean good sound research (I've been at this for 30 yrs now, so know my way around the genealogy market very well). However, 3 times, I had my genealogy rug yanked out from under me because I didn't have one piece of critical documentation that I needed, but someone else did. This went on and on over and over and I was really frustrated by the repeated disappointments.
So in 2006 my Dad took the simple test and our results floored me.
Thats when I found out that I been barking up all the Wrong Trees all along and never did I once imagine that we came out of Norway very very early on and then over to Scotland again very early on and eventually ended up in Nor. Ireland with the Presbyterians during the upheavals of religion that took place in Europe in those days.
Our MUDIE/MOODIE/MOODY family has been in Nor. Ireland since the 1600's. I know I've mentioned it before, but we do have documentation of Baptism records for our branch of MUDIE's/Moody's going back to 1700. That says that those childrens fathers were born in the latter 1600's.
One of them was named "Robert". Other early MUDIE's were James, Edward, Alexander, Joseph etc. and those are all names found in our several branches of matching Ydna Moody cousins family trees.
These records are from the Ballykelly Presbyterian Church in/near Lenamore/Magilligan, Co. L'derry, Nor. Ireland which is way up at the top in the country of Ireland, on the coast. There is a ton of stuff on line about our Moody family (Alexander Moody and wife Priscilla Dick) and our other common and oldest ancestors (Thomas Moody and 1st wife Jean McQuiston/McCuiston) also from Co. L'derry, Nor. Ireland.
We do know that some of the Robert Moodey/Rev. John Moodey
line links to some of our inter-married ydna family branches.
The CRAWFORD's for one link back to Pres. Andrew Jackson's family. Have you seen J. Atchison's MOODY family tree here on Rootsweb? That line of MOODY's/Moodey's, has a Lot of inter-links with our branches and I've written to the owner of that webpage many times exchanging info.
I do hope you will consider having your son or a MOODY Uncle ydna tested because you will be leavning your children the True legacy of our MOODY family and I personally think its very important.
Its also fun to finally Know without a doubt your Moody branch and with the documented genealogy you have, it will just really broaden and round out the satisfaction for your family as well. Its been so much fun meeting new cousins and exchanging info that some of us knew nothing about our Moody branches.
Our Alexander Mudie/Moodie/MOODY's family came over from Scotland (either the Dundee area or the Dunfermline area, 2 cousins have conflicting areas, but All of their descendants state that their Moody's came to Nor. Ireland from Scotland). We found a new "cousin" in Canada whose Moody line also ties into ours and her branch was from Co. Down, Nor. Ireland and Co. Armagh...going back to John MOODIE (as his name was spelled in the old records but later changed over to MOODY) who married Elizabeth SHANNON. This couple had sons William MOODY and Rev. James MOODY.
Rev. James Moody m. Frances KENNEDY and her line goes back to Scotland and Ayrshire where our very ancient MUDY's/MUDIE's/MOODIE's came from...Gilbert MUDY/Mudie, who was married into the Kennedy family and was a brother to Rev. William Mudy/Mudie who was the Bisop of Dornoc Cathedral in north eastern Scotland. (Caithness/Thurso area).
There are letters written between the two brothers and documentation regarding lands etc.
It is believed that the John MOODIE/Moody of Tandragee/Clare, Co. Armagh, Nor Ireland who married Elizabeth Shannon was from this line.
No proof yet, but it seems very probable from documentation and genealogy.
Anyway, I ramble on and on, but having your MOODEY ydna added to the mix would be so beneficial to your own family as well as to so many others.
There are so many various branches of Moody's out there its mind boggling.

If your Robert MOODEY was in the Rev. War and left a will, and you have a copy of the names from that will,if its not too much trouble for you to locate it, I would be very interested in the names he mentions or places he might name from that will.
Was he the Robert Moodey that was married to Mary/Margaret HUTCHINSON/Hutchison?? There are Two Robert Moody's who married HUTCHINSON women from the same area and I spent a great deal of time trying to sort them out. It was extremely confusing to me and still is to some degree, perhaps you could help me to sort this out as well.
I do hope you will contact Bob Moody for info on the ydna test, and if you do and get your resuls, Please do stay in touch.
Take care and best of luck in your searching.
