hi

I am a descendent of Balthazar and Louise Montag, Prussia to Osceola, Fond du Lac Co, WI in 1872. I found imm records for a Jacob and Anna with a son Ignatz from Prussia via Bremmen (Baltimore) 1860 to WI. see #228 on list. http://www.immigrantships.net/v10/1800v10/uhland18600627.htm...
are your Montags Catholic ?
I am searching for more info on a Anna Maria (Montag, poss first husband was Montag) b 1804 married to a Carl Berg in West Bend from about this time. I think Anna is somehow related to my Balthazar because his 2 dau are with the Berg fam on 1880 census. If you find any clues, please let me know, thanks.

Some Degenhardts are from the same place as the Montags.

From the 1880 edition of The History of Fond du Lac County:

Jacob Degenhardt, proprietor of the Railroad House, Campbellsport; born in Kreis-Mullhausen, Kullstadt, Prussia, Sept. 6, 1832; was educated in the Fatherland, where he traveled nine years for a firm, selling woolen goods; came to America in 1857, locating in Grant Co., Wis., and attending the Platteville school two winters; was two years in the European Hotel, Milwaukee, then traveled a year, selling dry goods, notions, etc. He then married and settled on a farm in Ashford, also acting as an insurance agent; has owned and kept the Railroad House since May, 1874, having in connection a bar and livery. Married Mrs. Regina Mauel, by whom he has three children--Regina, Michael and Henry; Mrs. D. was born in Rhenish, Prussia, in 1826, her former husband, Bernhardt Mauel, leaving her at his death with a sixty-acre farm and four children--Anna, John, Frank and Margaret. The family are Roman Catholics, and Mr. Degenhardt is a Democrat, having been Supervisor three years, and Assessor the same length of time.

I just sent this and some other details to Lisa Jones, and I will post this a second time on a different thread from 1998 where someone asked about Jacob.

Hi Melissa,

My name is Michael Montag and I didn't know that much about my past family history until I opened an account here on ancestry.com. I found out that my great grandfather, Bernard Montag, who migrated to California was born in Oshkosh Wisconsin in 1896. His grandfather, Bernard Montag who was born in Nackenheim, Hesse-Darmstadt Germany in 1834 was married to Agnes Link. So you guys are my distant relatives!

Obit: Marguerite (Montag) Wirtz of Iowa (1910-2010)

Marguerite Dora Wirtz, 99, died on January 12, 2010 at the West Bend Care Center. She was born July 10, 1910 near West Bend, the daughter of Henry and Luna Sloan Montag.
Marguerite lived in the West Bend community her entire life and was a lifetime member of Sts. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church. She married Alfred Wirtz on January 24, 1933. Together they farmed 36 years before their reitrement and then enjoyed life in their comfortable home in West Bend.
Marguerite was a past member of the Ladies Aid Society and the CDA of the church. She volunteered for a number of years at the Care Center, helping with activities for the residents. She was a quilter. Family and friends received many of her hand crafted quilt and lap robes. She provided quilts which were raffled at the fall parish dinner for a number of years.
Survivors include her seven children and 18 grandchildren: Mel and Gretchen Wirtz and their daughters Chris, Laurie and Kari; Dorothy Wirtz McEnany and Larry and their children Terry, Patsy, Katie and Tom; Betsy Wirtz Rukavina and her son Jason; Bernie Wirtz Zimmer and John and their children John, Michael and Jennifer; Harry and DeeDee Wirtz and their sons David, Andrew and Brian; Don and Alyce Wirtz and their daughters Elisabeth and Erin; Ray and Pam Wirtz and their children Jeremy and Robbin, 25 great grandchildren, brothers Philip, Robert and Martin and sisters Dora, Florence and Rose.
Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband Alfred in 1989, grandson Patrick Zimmer, and Son-in-law Tony Rukavina, parents, 4 sisters and 6 brothers.
Our mother was an unfailing optimist, and her quick wit kept us smiling. She always told us how well she was cared for at the West Bend Care Center and liked our phone call visits more than anything. Her stories of her growing years and hard farm work, working alongside our Dad while taking wonderful care of 7 children, will long inspire us to do our part to honor her memory.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Wirtz will be held Saturday 1:30 PM at Sts. Peter and Paul's Cathlolic Church, West Bend with burial to follow in the West Bend Cemetery. Visitation is from 4:30-7:30 Pm Friday at the Harris Funeral Home in West Bend.

Montag/Wirtz Connection West Bend IA

I am looking for any info regarding these two families. My grandfather is Paul Montag, son of Henry and Luna Montag. My grandmother is Lena Montag, daughter of Jacob and ? Wirtz. We know virtually nothing past my grandmother's siblings about the family, except that they emigrated from Switzerland to Argentina, then up to the US about 1910? (Where did they come in?) Then went to West Bend, IA. I would like to pursue the Wirtz line as we have almost no knowledge of my grandmothers father and mothers' families. We are connected with the Sloans as well on my grandmothers mother side and that's about all I know there. Thanks for any/all info. Please feel free to e-mail me and I will get back with you soon. Thanks!

I have not been successful in finding out much about Jacob and Anna, but will share what I have. I recently gathered a few more clues at my grandmother's funeral last week. She was Lena's sister.
Murders in Newman, KS

Does anyone have more on the story of a Mr. Montag (sp?) who lived near Newman, KS, around 1924? Was drunk one day and tried to kill his wife with a shotgun, but hit her sister by mistake. Realized his error, and then shot his wife. After both women were dead, he supposedly wrote "Blame The Priest" on the wall in blood and then shot himself. Only blew off part of his face, and survived to stand trial and life in jail. He sold his home and spent everything on the huge "Christ on the Cross" bronze statue still standing over the two womens graves in Newman Cemetery. Story told to me by my mother-in-law who was a child living nearby. Hoping to find a newspaper article on what must have been a big story.

My great-great-great grandfather brought our family from Germany to the Wisc. area in the mid-1800s. At that time the family name was Montag. Around the turn of the century, they changed it to Monday. Some parts of the family either changed it back or never changed in the first place. My aunt wrote a book about the family, which can be purchased from my cousin:

Kim Davis
John & Kim Davis
2203 Hamilton Dr.
North Bend, OR 97459
541-756-6168
genebug@quixnet.net

Best Regards,

Jon
Ignatz and Clara Montag lived in Wisconsin and had 6 children: Regina, Tina, Jacob, Peter, Joseph, and Mattias. Ignatz and Clara Montag are buried in Holy Angels Cemetery, in West Bend, Wisconsin. Also buried there is Jacob Montag born: 1813, Mary Montag born: 1851 and Stephen Monday born: 1857, but I don't know if they are related to Ignatz Montag. I am looking for information on Ignatz Montag's parents and siblings. Thank you.
Mary

Jacob Montag - Washington Co WI

Hello,

My ancestor Adam Frank Laufer came from Wendehausen, Thuringia, Germany. His mother is believed to have a maiden name of Montag.

On the 1860 federal census in Trenton, Washington County, Wisconsin, there is a Jacob Montag living next door to Adam Frank Laufer. I'm surmising this is potentially some relation to Adam, possibly a cousin on his mother's side.

Does anyone have any information of this Jacob Montag or a Montag who may have married a Laufer? I believe the Montags in question were from Wendehausen as well.

Thanks in advance.

I believe the Jacob Montag (b. 1813/14 in Germany) that you mentioned is the father of Ignatz. If you have access to Ancestry's records, check the 1860-1870-1880 censuses for Jacob Montag and family. They were living in Trenton, Washington Co, Wisconsin.

Interestingly, Jacob Montag lived next door to Adam and Ernestine Laufer on the 1860 and 1870 censuses. It is believed, but not known for certain, that Adam Laufer's mother was a Montag. So Jacob may be a cousin of Adam Laufer. The Montags may have come from a small town in Thuringia, Germany called Wendehausen.

I'm wondering if it is possible that your Michael Montag is the same Michael who was married to Lillian (Lillie) Bretz. They lived in Omaha, Nebraska in the 1930's. According to census records their children were Lenoard, Florence, Katherine, Robert, John and Dorothy. I have no further information regarding Michael, only Lillie who is the daughter of my great granduncle Albert. I'm most interested in possibly knowing a little about their children if this is possible. Thank you very much. Roberta Bear, Parshall, ND

Sounds good. I'll look forward to hearing from you. Question, did you ever hear anything about Lillian's mother? Her name was Lillian Heaston. I think, but I can't be positive, that Lillian's mother's name was Catherine. In the 1910 census I found Catherine and sister Della living with Albert and Lillie and Lillian. I think Albert and Lillie divorced. Don't know when or what happened to her though. Albert died in 1932, and there was no mention of his wife in the notice. Another mystery.

Thank you for getting back to me regarding Lillian, I appreciate it. Now I have a little something more to go on. I would like to send you the link to the family tree on Ancestry, or on MyFamily.com. If you will contact me at robertabear@msn.com I will send you an invitation. I have a great deal of information on Lillian's ancestors that I would love to share with you. Without looking, I think the tree goes back 5 or 6 generations from her. Lillian's father Albert was my great grandmother's brother. It wasn't until just recently that we found out Albert had died in 1932. All along, we thought he had outlived his other siblings. You mentioned that Lillian and her second husband lived in you Dad's home. Would your Dad be Robert Montag? Do you have a pic of Lillian? I only have one of her aunt Ola who is my great grandmother. It would be interesting to know more about her. Remember to contact me at: robertabear@msn.com

Lillian did remarry. Last name McCarthy. I remember that everyone called him Pappy (I assume its not his given name) but he wasn't well liked. He was a diabetic and outlived her - selling the house by forging my Dad's name on the deed. He knew he wasn't liked and was afraid of not having insulin. Dad owned the house but let them live upstairs. Dad was furious but let it go rather than have a family scandal. Pappy is buried in west Omaha in Evergreen Memorial Park. I remember my Mom stamping on his grave. Made an impression on me - she was usually nicer than that ~L. The house is gone now, interstate went through. It was somewhere around 24th st on the north side. I have the address somewhere. Would love to know where Lillian was born - something about the family. I have pictures, if anyone cares. Would love to see a picture of her when she was young. Michael's brother John was a cop, as most know, but my Dad told me he didn't commit sucide - he was murdered. He witnessed it - saw it from outside a window- and said it was covered up. I remember him telling me that the men who did were still alive and in 'civic' service when I was growing up. Lots of stories.

Was the Elizabeth M you spoke of in your posting a Monday? If not how did Monday and Montag get in the same family line? My last name is Monda, which was originally spelled Monday. So that is why I am wondering. You can email me personally if you would like and we can maybe make some connections between linages.
