Information regarding the Opera Singer

Hello we are related. I heard stories of her, she died on a cruise ship coming back from Europe where she had performed. I actually have seen her photograph. She was obese and died of a heart attack in the ship after drinking a glass of water. Her father was John V. Monsanto my Great Grandfather who was the Dutch Ambassador to Haiti and whose home is still in Curacao. John V. Monsanto had many children and was of his daughters married the Pharmacist that created the Monsanto Chemical Company. I have more family history if interested. A Pena one of our relatives researched our family successfully to 79 AD.

Hello,

That is a good question "main progenitor". Monsanto name dates back years, in fact it is an ancient surname. There is an ancient city in Portugal called Monsanto Monsanto means "Holy Mountain". Monsanto is a Sephardic-Jewish last name. The Jews who were kicked out of Rome (some of them) came to the Iberian Peninsula -- spain, portugal, netherlands, etc. and they settled their and took on the customs of the native people. Many were expelled during the Spanish Inquisition. They call those Jews Sephardic. Anyway, that is where the last name came from, like I said it is ancient.

The Monsanto Company was started by a man who named the company after his wife's maiden name, and she was from spain, see the connection. So back from ancient times, this is the name we inherited, and we inherited it in many different ways.

Hi Elizabeth;

This sounds like my family. I have pix of Jacob and Louise, Carlos was their son,a banker from New York. Armand was Carlos' son. Armand was my mom's dad. I have pix of them as well. It appears that Louise did not live long. She was also a singer in New York. Any information you have would be appreciated.

Charles Fisher
chfisher2004@yahoo.com

Re: Mendes Monsanto

My research into the Mendes Monsanto family has not come across the name Gustavo before. The Mendes Monsanto family I am researching were Sephardic Jews who emigrated to Curacao. Around 1800 Jacob Mendes Monsanto moved to St Tomas where he raised a large, apparently Christian, family. His son Charles Cadet, also known as Carlos married in St Thomas had several children and then moved to Puerto Rico in the 1830's. One of his son's was educated in Europe and then moved to NYC where he married, had children and died.

While researching the Mendes Monsanto family I looked though a record of people who emigrated to Puerto Rico. I found Carlos in the 1830's and Josias Tomas Monsanto. Tomas, from St Croix, was Jewish and converted to the Catholic Church on March 7, 1810, the day before he married Lucy Shritch (?sp). They had a son Thomas Josias who was baptised on April 12, 1812.

I am not sure how much research you have done on your family and you did not mention any dates in relation to your grandfather, Gustavo Monsanto. I checked the census records and found entires for Gustavo Monsanto in Puerto Rico. He was unmarried in 1910. In 1918 his WW1 draft registration lists his birth as February 29, 1878. He is married with three children in the 1920 census and married with 8 children in the 1930 census. Gustavo Monsanto y Garcia was married to Consuela Leon y Rivera. The children named in the 1930 census were Mercedes born 1916, Luz Maria born 1918, Elisa Angelia born 1921, *Gustavo born 1923, Antonia born 1925, Ella Rosa born 1926 and Luis born 1929. There may have been other children born after 1930, but there is not computer access to those records.

I also found census records for Tomas Monsanto y Bartolo and Antonia Garcia de Monsanto. They were married around 1877. Tomas was born around 1851. I think they may be Gustavo Monsanto y Garcia's parents and possibly a descendant of the above Josias Tomas Monsanto. That would be research for you.

Hope this was helpful. I made copies of the census and draft registration. If you would like them send me your address via email.

Elizabeth

I have information about the Louise Mendes Monsanto's family. She was one of five daughters born in NYC. Louise and Jacob Mendes Monsanto had two sons, Carlos and Armand. Armand settled in Connecticut. and I think that is probably who you are descended from.

Elizabeth

Mendes Monsanto

Herman Mendes Monsanto was born May 16, 1831. There are conflicting reports as to where he was born. Some say St Thomas and others say Puerto Rico. I do have a record of him traveling from Mayagues, Puerto Rico with Carlos M. Monsanto age 36 in 1841, Herman was ten years old at the time. In later census records, Herman states that his father was born in St Thomas and his mother in Martinique. I believe Herman may be the sibling of Louise Monsanto born in 1841 in Puerto Rico and married Gorham Hubbard in 1877. Herman Monsanto married Clemence Rouvillain in NYC in 1867 and they had five daughters.

Thank you,

Elizabeth

Hello,

So good to read your post. I have been trying to do research off and on regarding the Monsanto family name. My grandfather was Joseph Monsanto and his youngest son was Leroy Monsanto. Leroy Monsanto was born in St. Thomas, VI. I was just in St. Thomas last year. My grandfather Joseph Monsanto was born in Haiti and his parents brought him to St. Thomas at an early age. There is a town in Portugal named Monsanto. I do know that the Monsanto company was started by a man with the last name Queen and he named the company after his wife's maiden name which was Monsanto, and his wife was from spain. I just ordered a book from ancestry.com named "The Monsanto Family name in History to find out more about the origin of the name.

My research showed me that the name is Sephardic-Jewish which makes sense as the sephardic jews were Jews who migrated to spain after they were dispeled from Rome.

Hello,my grandfathers name was Herman Lucidro Monsanto,he would always tell our family that we descended from the royal household of Mendez in Portugal. He even had the family crest engraved on chalices, what Ive heard amongst you all sounds so familiar because he would often talk of his father being a merchant marine and St.thomas.What I do know is that Monsanto s have distinct physical characteristics, very strong genes in spite of the mixture with a myriad of nationalities.

Hello Family,
My name is Lorraine Monsanto of the St. Thomas Monsanto family. I was born and raised in New York, my father was named Verne the son of George and Rose Monsanto of Charlotte Amalie, St.Thomas. My grandmother was a nurse and everyone called her Grannie Rose, I saw mention of a family member who worked at the airport, that was my uncle Babe Monsanto who did run customs at the airport. It would be great if I could get feed back because we share a very powerful name with a wonderful history.

Hi - We have been searching for a Monsanto Family that settled/spent time in Puerto Rico. From what we know, Ysabel Monsanto Folch was born wither in The Netherlands, Curacao, or St Thomas. She is my great grandmother. Her husband was Julio Olivieri Piermont. Her father did business in Puerto Rico and we think his name was either Charles or Thomas. All we know about my grandmother's mother is that her last name was Folch.

We'd appreciate any information that you have concerning Monsanto Family. We have not been very successful for a year now. Looking forward to hearing from you and the powerful Monsanto name.
