The ship, Fresia, left Hamburg and Havre and arrived in New York, 4 April 1883. Among the passengers was Gottlieb Moke, his wife, Anna, and their three children: Anna, Emma, and Bertha. The next family listed on the ship log was Gottfried Herbst, his wife Susanna, and their five children; the three daughters were Anna, Emma, and Emilie, who was always called Bertha. Susanna Herbst, my great-grandmother, was a Moke; Susanna was 38 and Gottlieb was 30 years old when they immigrated. The families settled on adjacent homesteads in Douglas County, SD, and had additional children. As family and friends immigrated together and settled in the same area, and given the ages of Susanna and Gottlieb, and the names of their children, I believe that they were siblings, although they possible could be cousins. Gottlieb and Anna's daughter was the correct age and in the right place to be Fred Neugebauer's wife. A trip to the county courthouse probably would clear all this up.
There were other Neugebauer/ Moke connections; in addition to his wife, Fred Neugebauer's sister, Anna, married my great-uncle, Herman Herbst, while his uncle Ernest married my great-aunt Bertha, both children of Susanna (Moke) Herbst; his brother, Edward, married Clara Luebke whose brother Helmuth married Gertrude Moke and her sister Hedwig (Hattie) married Gottlieb Moke, both children of Gottlieb and Anna Moke. Additionally, Fred's sister, Pauline married Ernest Misterek, my grandmother, Emma (Schnell) Herbst's cousin ( but no Moke blood lines). Many of Fred's cousins married people related to me by blood or marriage; we are talking about 50 years here - and it seems that everyone is related by blood or marriage - and, since they all came from the same area in Germany, they probably were inbred before they got here.
The internet, which has many errors and must be used with caution, lists a Johann Gottlieb Moke, born 12 March 1853, in Ottag, Kreis Ohlau, Silesia, Germany, son of Paul Karl and Rosina (Hoffman) Moke, and husband of Anna Susanna Misch. Based on the federal census, this is the correct birthdate for Gottlieb Moke; my family bible has Ottag as the place of birth for Susanna (Moke) Herbst.
