The baptism record for Antonin Mohelnicky (Anton Mohelnitzky) has been located!

Anton Mohelnitzky was born March 24, 1848 and baptized in Seltschan on March 25, 1848. At that time, the town was located Bohemia in the Austrian Empire. Today, the town is known as Sedlcany and is located in Czech Republic.

More info:
http://sites.google.com/site/auswanderer20/Home/mohelnitzky/...

I finally checked the series of books, "Germans to America: Lists of Passengers Arriving at U.S. Ports 1850-1897, 1840s" and looked for Mohelnitzky. I found nothing that sounded/looked close.

The last name is spelled wrong in so many places, though, so maybe I'll never find him on a ship list.

Here's my updated website URL:
http://sites.google.com/site/auswanderer20/Home/mohelnitzky

Julia and Mary Mohelnitzky - lived at St. Rose Orphan Asylum

I received an email today with the good news that Julia and Mary's names are listed on index cards at St. Rose Orphan Asylum, Milwaukee, Wisconsin (now called St. Rose Youth & Family Center, Inc.).

The sisters' last name was listed as "Mowhometichkie" -- birth dates and parent's names were not listed. I'm assuming the spelling of the last name is phonetic because the name is usually spelled "Mohelnitzky."

Both girls entered the orphanage on March 14th, 1858.
Julia was discharged on April 5th, 1861.
Mary was discharged on June 4th, 1862.

No record was found of their baptism or confirmation.

There was a reference to Book #1 on the index cards. It's possible the book is still in existence in the archives at the orphanage. If it's found, it may list the town where the girls were born in Bohemia.

When I receive the copies of the index cards, I'll post it here: http://violetblue20.googlepages.com/juliamohelnitzky%2Canton...
I haven't checked "Germans to America: Lists of Passengers Arriving at U.S. Ports 1850-1897, 1840s" yet, but I found a link that shows where the books can be found:
http://www.genealogienetz.de/misc/emig/gta-holdings.html

The years are about right, as I think the Mohelnitzky family emigrated between 1854-1858.

Will put that on my "to do" list for when I get to the big city.

Thanks for the reminder, I almost overlooked it!
Debbie

If so, from which source - Leo Baca's books, or Germans to America? And was there more information?

Thanks for the info,
Debbie

I have sent you an e-mail off the board.

The SKY, CKY is Czech and Slovak meaning that the surname is originated from a town by that name. SKI is Polish.
Hungarian " i " means from and " y " means of.
Mohelnice is in Slavic language not Hungarian.
Even if they met in "new land" their ancestral villages could be within 10 miles radius.

Thanks for the info. I did find out that every Mohelnicky in the German phone book are all from the same family. The eldest was born in Märisch Ostrau in Czech Republic. Someone had told this person that the name Mohelnicky was possibly Hungarian, about 500 years ago, because of the "y" on the end.

I've traced the Ruskauff family to the early 1800's to the town Bissendorf in Kreis (county) Osnabrueck in the state of Niedersachsen, Germany. One group went to Holland, another group went to America.

My Mohelnitzky and Ruskauff great-great-grandparents found each other in Wisconsin where they married in 1872 in Richland County.

Mohelnitzky: Anton, Julia and Mary and their parents

In a reference to Anton Mohelnitzky's two sisters, in a May 2, 1953 letter written by Frances Mohelnitzky Kussmann, she wrote, "Both sisters have died since - Julia Klein & Mary Schmidt."

I'm wondering if there may be old letters or postcards written to the Anton Mohelnitzky and Mary Ruskauff family from Anton's sisters, Julia and Mary. The letters would have addresses on them and other interesting facts, and the address could be traced by looking at old city directories, to see who lived there.

Another clue is a little vague, that Mary Mohelnitzky Schmidt's descendants lived at 52nd and Layton in Milwaukee. According to a current map, 52nd Street is no longer there (it's a park), and I don't know how I could find out what the address would be at the house on the corner (sometime before 1965). If I knew the address, I could look in a city directory for the name of the resident.

I searched and searched for Mary Mohelnitzky Schmidt's marriage record and so far found nothing. No Mohelnitzky is listed in the pre-1907 records, but lots of Schmidt/Schmitt names. And we don't even know if Mary was adopted after living in the orphanage, and maybe took another last name. If we are lucky, Mary's marriage record may list the birth town in Bohemia for her father and mother. (Julia's marriage record did not list the town).

I haven't found out what orphanage Julia and Mary were placed in. I'm thinking it may have been St. Rose Orphan Asylum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Their brother, Anton, lived at St. Aemilian Orphan Asylum in St. Francis (now Milwaukee) from March 1858 to May 1, 1859.

And what really happened to Anton, Julia and Mary's parents? There is no record of death for them that I've found. Did they really come to the USA, or both die on the ship to America? Did the mother remarry? I haven't found a record for that either, not in Wisconsin anyway. And I have not found the family listed on a ship list; I think they may have immigrated about 1854.

~Debbie
http://violetblue20.googlepages.com/home

Anton Mohelnitzky - possible birth place

Seltschan - Could this be Anton's birth place?

The name of the town where Vincent's brother Antonin Mohelnitzky lived in 1825 was Sedlicanech (Sedlcany).
The German spelling and Bohemian pronunciation for the town "Sedlcany" is "Seltschan" and would be pronounced, in a Bohemian dialect, as "Sel-tsch'n." A person hearing this dialect, may think the spelling would be "Sellgan" or "Zellgan."

From Wikipedia: Sedlčany (German: Seltschan) is a town in Central Bohemian Region, Czech Republic. It is located at 49°40′0″N, 14°25′0″E.

More info about Anton Mohelnitzky can be found here:
http://violetblue20.googlepages.com/home

Mohelnitzky - Anton and his sisters Julia and Mary

Julia Mohelnitzky Klein and Anton Klein were married on Feb. 25, 1873 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. See Wisconsin Marriages, pre-1907, volume 13, page 0254.

Unfortunately, Julia is listed as "Julie Muchanetschki" in the Ancestry.com search results because that is the spelling of her name on the marriage certificate. Her last name is actually "Mohelnitzky."

Julia's parents are listed as Andreas Muchanetschki and Maria Muchanetschki. Obviously, "Muchanetschki" is incorrect and should be "Mohelnitzky" according to other documents for this family.

Julia and Anton Klein had two children: George Klein and Katy Klein. George was married to Ida M. Meunier on July 5, 1902 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. See Wisconsin Marriages, pre-1907, volume 34, page 0026. Julia Mohelnitzky is listed as the mother of George J. Klein.

Julia's brother, Anton Mohelnitzky, was a resident of St. Aemilian's Orphan Asylum located in St. Francis, Wisconsin. He was admitted there in 1858 (he was born in 1848). The orphanage has a file card with his name, birth year and admission date listed, but no other detailed records.

If anyone has found Mary Mohelnitzky's marriage or death certificate, let me know. It's possible she was married to a Mr. Schmidt or Schmitz.

For further information, please see my website:
http://violetblue20.googlepages.com/home

~Debbie

Anton Mohelnitzky - 1858 - St. Aemilian's Orphanage

The date of Anton's immigration from Bohemia to America is not known at this time.

In March of 1858 Anton was placed in St. Aemilian's Orphan Asylum located in St. Francis (near Milwaukee), Wisconsin. This was a boys orphanage and was established in 1850.

Girls were placed at St. Rose Orphan Asylum which was founded in 1848. Anton's 2 sisters (Julia and Mary Mohelnitzky) may have been placed in St. Rose.

Information found on a file card found at St. Aemilian's orphanage:

* Name: Mohanitzky Anton.
* Born: 1847
* Father deceased: yes
* Mother deceased: yes
* Admitted: Mar. 1858
* Placed Out (Relatives, Strangers): 5/1/59
* Register: St. A.O.A.
* No. 138

To read more about my research, go here: http://violetblue20.googlepages.com/

~Debbie
