My third-great grandmother was Gertrude Moebs, daughter of John George Moebs and Anna Julianna Dietz, born in Nieder-Moerlen, Hesse-Darmstadt, in 1785. Her daughter, Catherine Morschel was born in nearby Ober-Moerlen, and was married and died in Detroit. It's possible your George is a cousin line. Gertrude had a brother Peter, born 1780, who married Elisabeth Wolf in Nieder-Morlen in 1810, but I didn't research this line further.

There were other Moebs in Nieder-Morlen as I recall that could also be ancestors of George. My purpose is to bring this to your attention. If you're unsure of a particular town in Hesse-Darmstadt, this could be a lead. Baptism records for Nieder-Morlen are available through LDS; 1808-1851 are on microfilm 0948084, which would cover your George.
