Minerva was my great great great grandmother. Her daughter was named after her sister Lavina. The daughter, Lavina Madell, went only by Madell and for some reason has shown up as Amanda Madell and Hattie M. Do you know anything about Eliza, Minerva and Lavina's mother? We are trying to find out who Minerva and Lavina's father was and where they were married. Any info you have would be greatly appreciated. :) Thanks!!

Greetings, Cousins--though I have no idea how distant we may be. I am the only son of Pearl Arthur (Art) Stirling.

Dad was the sole surviving child of Sherman Stirling and Mathilda Ouile (I think was her maiden name). He had no cousins bearing either his or his mother's surname. But I remember visiting Uncle Orville, Aunt Florence, and one of dad's few cousins, Harold (I think) Moccabee as a youth.

Harold lived somewhere near the Ohio State Fairgrounds (Clara Ave, or Velma Ave) in Columbus, Oh. I remember Harold having 2 children, roughly my age (I'm 54), though I don't remember their names.

Dad also occasionally visited Aunt Gertie and Uncle Bob (Ouile), who lived a few blocks south of the Fair Grounds. Aunt Gertie and Uncle Bob were quite old. They were a brother and sister who never married, but shared what appeared to be a tiny converted garage. I don't remember when Aunt Gertie died. But Uncle Bob died in May, 1965 at age 83, while in either the Franklin County poorhouse, or Alum Crest Hospital. I think he died of TB.

I don't know if any of this is helpful to you in tracing ancestry. But I know I've encountered an hereditary cul-de-sac in trying to trace my dad's family tree on his mother's side, the side which we appear to have in common.

Moccabee, born about 1846 in PA; F.M.Moccabee, born about 1848 in PA; Hattie M. Moccabee, born February 12, 1851 in PA and died May 15, 1929 in Toledo, Lucas, Ohio; Catharine Moccabee, born about 1853 in Ohio; Emeline Moccabee, born about 1857 in Ohio.

As for William Gazaway Moccabee, he was the son of William Moccabee, George E. Moccabee's brother.

Marie M. Duncan so were second cousins I think. Do you remember your grandfather or your father talking about Orvilles' brothers Harold or Gazaway. Harold was my father. I can remember Daddy speaking of his brother Gazaway and I remember living in Columbus near Uncle Orville and Aunt Florence. He was 50 years of age when my dad was born and died in 1927 so I really don't know a lot about this family and I'm just starting my research on this surname. What research have you done, Molly? Have you spoken to your Moccabee grandparents, or asked your parents about them? Have you looked at their marriage records, or even birth (and perhaps death) records? Have you looked in the Census for them? It's always best to work from the known -- you and your family, to the unknown -- the past.

There are 8 Moccabees listed in Ancestry's Index to the 1930 Census, and they all lived in Ohio; all but one was born there. The remaining individual, Ruth Moccabee, listed her birthplace as California, and was the head of the family at age 45, making her birthdate around 1885. This could be an interesting story. It looks as if most of the Moccabees in Ohio lived in Cuyahoga County, Cleveland township. Besides Ruth, the only Moccabee living in Franklin County Ohio was William M., age 54, a prisoner! The actual census image is for Ruth is missing, for some reason. :(

If you can find the name of your grandparents, I'll see if I can find them in the Census for you.

The only information I have in my Bible is my husbands parents name and grandparents name, and location.
My husband was Jack Joseph Moccabee b 02/19/1929 d.08/29/1995. His father was Orville Moccabee d.06/04/1957 Columbus, Ohio.
Don't have a birth on him, but born near Ross County, Ohio. Orvilles parents were Nancy Cydrus and Albert Moccabee. Contact Linda Moccabee on the surname message board. Her father and brother did research.
