Hi, I can't claim it as a maiden name, butI was born Jonathan Peter Moakes. My father die in a road accident and my mother later remarried, so my name was changed to Scott. I have no relations in your area, but I could give you a great deal of background information on the name. My Moakes family come from Marylebone in Londo back to 1780. The main groups of Moakes families oringinated around the Mansfield area, around Eaton Socon, and several families in London back to 1780ish, but these most likely came from one of the other two sources. I have some historical information, also from the "northern" Moakes families. If your interested contact me.

Lynne,
could you tell me what your father and grandfathers names were/are? I have a list of all Moakes and Mokes birth, death and marriage registration references upto 1880. Many are from Normanton. The earliest reference I have is from the LDS of a Sussanna Moake who was baptised in Howden in Yorkshire in 28th September 1579. I've heard two origins for the name. One is the name of dregs in beer brewing, which I doubt is the origin. The explanation I prefer is that it was a viking word for a meeting and drinking hall. There is suposedly a pub in England called the Moakes, but I've never been there. My uncle told me about it. I have to finish now. My year old daughter has just woken up and wants to help with the typing.

Hi Jim,
you can contact me at Jonbar@t-online.de
I don't remember all that I've written, so I'll give a short synopsis ofmyMoakes researches. First. I'm interested in Moakes families, bacauseI was born Jonathan Peter Moakes. I#ve done a great deal of research into theMoakes families from London and particularly my family from Marylebne London. I'm also in contact with 3 other English people, who are researching South London Moakes families. The main group of Moakes families cme from Mansfield/Nottingham area of England.
I think I can most likely help you, specifically with Moakes from Marylebone, very well with London Moakes familes, and quitw well with the family in general.

I was very interested to read about your Moakes family tree. I have just started on mine and the name Moakes has come up. My Grandmothers name was Eileen Margaret Moakes born Apr 1924 Lewisham as was her brother James Edwin in Aug 1915. Their father was called James Henry Patrick Moakes born 1886 in Marylebone and then I get stuck. It seems fom various family members that he was illegitimate and therefore took his mothers name which may have been Margaret. His father may have been Irish but had little or nothing to do with his son and there appears to have been other children born to various mothers. But tales tend to get longer and wilder as time goes by. We're all very respectable now anyway!
Can you help?
