ALLAN MITCHELL - bio
Allan MITCHELL was born in Blake, Ontario, Canada in 1836. Mary A. McDERMOTT was born in Utica, New York in 1841. They were married in Bolton Village, Ontario in 1860.
In the late 1880's, Mr Mitchell and family moved to Grandin, ND where he was the bookkeeper for the Grandin Farms.
Nine children were born into this family:
Jack Mitchell
Kate Mitchell
Alice Mitchell
Annetta Mitchell
Bob Mitchell
Ida Mitchell
Tom Mitchell
Will Mitchell
Mary Mitchell (died while very young)
The family moved to Towner in 1882 or 1883 and made their home there. Mrs Mary Mitchell, Allan wife, passed away in 1891.
Mr Mitchell, with Jack as his assistant, opened a dry goods store on Main Street. They had piece goods and notions (buttons, ribbons, pins and lace) to be used for decorations on pillow covers, dresses, etc. At that time of the century, women made their own dresses, or had a dressmaker do the job. Jack and Mr. Mitchell waited on the customers and were very polite and helpful to the people. In busy times, Kate Mitchell and Mrs Annetta Soule helped out in the store. Annetta married George Soule and lived in Towner until her family grew up.
Most of the children fra the Mitchell family left Towner: Ida and Alice married; Tom and Will went back to Canada and Bob moved to the Soule ranch near Towner, to work and raise his family there. Later he moved to California to be near some of his older children. One of his daughter's, Edith Mitchell lived in Velva, ND.
Now with the small family consisting of Father Mitchell and Jack; Kate Mitchell, who was a primary teacher, cared for the family home at Towner. She helped at the store when needed. Kate taught many years and was interested in children. She was attractive and had beautiful brown hair and eyes. She's very patient with everyone and liked to visit with people. She was to be married, buther father put a stop to that. After Allan Mitchell passed away in 1926, the store was sold; Jack and Kate spent most of their time in Norwich, ND; with their sister: Mrs Ida Stubbins. Jack passed away in 1932 and Kate in 1935.
