Finally, someone wh may possibly be on the same track as my self. If not, oh well. Atleast you gave me a smile. i have been conducting family research on my paternal side. This led me to South Carolina. The surname is Berry. I've gone back as far as 1870. Because slaves were considered as property before this time, there is no other census I can find them on. My search took me back as far as my Great Grandfather. Here is where I may have some information for you. In this census has not yet married, so I have both he and his soon to be wife listed as single and in separate house holds. His wife was Lucinda Mitchel. I had always been told that there was indian in my family and Cherokee was supposedly the tribe. Lucinda's parents were Amelia and JOHN Mitchel (one L on the census.) Lucinda had 3 siblings, Reuben, JOHN and Fannie. Perhaps JOHN (sibling) was your relative. Please e-mail me back, and I'll give you a little more information (DOB, age). Sorry for being so long winded. Libra2@compuserve.com

Hi Carolyn, received your response to message. The only information I can pass to you is the following. (Let me say that I don't know if we are talking about the same Lucinda Mitchel). Lucinda Mitchel (One L on 1870 census) was one of four children that John and Amelia Mitchel had. At least this is how it read on the census. Lucinda married my great Grandfather - Edward Berry. (Although they did not document marriages they were married as far as living together after this census and raising a family of 7 or 8 children. On the different yeared census sometimes they show up Black, some times they show up as Mulatto. I was told that there was Cherokee in my family but I was never quite sure where it originated. All of this history (so far) is in the State of South Carolina. I wish I could provide more information for you but this is all to date. The man Lucinda was wife to was Edward Berry. For this reason, I do not think they are the same people. But who knows. I too was told that the family was prominate. They owned alot of land which was wrongfully taken away from them. Also, there was a Doctor, a Judge (I think he was white and gave his son the land) and a sheriff. When did you go to South Carolina? I've never been myself, but plan to go eventually. Hopefully, people won't be so tight lipped. I'd love to see pictures of family members from way back when. I recently hired a researcher to contuct some tracing for me as he lives there in Aiken South Carolina. Again sorry I couldl not be of more help. Stay in touch if you would like. Letitia

I am researching my grandfather George Mitchell, he had a sister named Mary Mitchell. They were born early to mid 1800s. My grandfather's military records show him being from Florence South Carolina.

My folks are African American, havent ran into anything that would suggest Native American - yet.
He later moved to Virginia then West Virginia. His sister lived and I think died in Martinsville, WV.

Any help?

Mitchell

My ggg-grandmother's name was Mary Mitchell. I have no other info on her but she married George Warren who was born in SC in 1841. They had 7 children; John, Elizabeth, Sallie, Nettie, Mattie, and Georgy. If any of this sound familiar let me know.
