I am looking for any information on my grandfather's sister her name was Beatrice Midgett born around 1906 in Massachusetts, my grandpa's name was Joseph B.Midgett born 1908, she came to Massachusetts with her mother Mary Midgett born 1887 and her Aunt Ada Midgett born 1892 in North Carolina. I wonder who two young black women would travel with from North Carolina to Massachusetts with in the 1910's. Any help would be nice. Laura

Dorcas Midgett b 1836 married Ignatious Scarborough DNA

I have a DNA candidate who is a descendant of Dorcas Midgett born 1836 Currituck County, NC, died before 1870, married Ignatious Scarborough (1823-1901). We do not know who her mother is and we are hopeful to be able to connect her to her family by using DNA.

This test is currently not funded. If you descend from this line, this test is relevant to your family tree and the results can tell us if her direct ancestor was native and may also be able to connect her to her family line via a genetic match. You can contribute at this link through the Hatteras Yline project for descendants of Dorcas Midgett. Here's the link - http://www.familytreedna.com/group-general-fund-contribution...

Dorcas Midgett and Ignatious Scarborough had several children,.

Easter "Jane" Scarborough married Charlie Miller.
Dorcas "Docia" Scarborough married Cyrus Richard Hooper
Benjamin Scarborough
James "Walter" Grandy Scarborough married Elmetta Gray
Comfort Scarborough
Melvina Scarborough married Farrow Lankford Scarborough

Roberta Estes
robertajestes@att.net

Hi Roberta,

I understand about FW. He was working with Dr. David Phelps some time ago doing some digs. My husband's property is where they found the 400 yr old 10K gold signet ring back in 1998 and other wonderful artifacts. It was actually Fred who called us to get permission, however, since the LOST COLONY, my hubby refused to sign some paperwork regarding the artifacts found on his property. He would NOT turn over any rights to the LOST COLONY or Fred. We still have the agreement he wanted hubby to sign. Anyways, the artifacts are still hubby's property and being curated at ECU.

Last time I saw Fred, we went to a symposium and we met some of the folks from that town about 50 miles west and some of the Indian tribe that once lived in this area that are now in NY.

WOW! I was hoping to hear some good news about the ELKS! I was always fascinated by that finding. But weren't some of them traced back to Samuel Elks (genealogical links?). If they were traced to him, I would think there would be some kind of DNA?

I do research in the Hampton Roads area, infact, I am writing a book that will end with 31 Dec 1999. My book is about the largest family tree in any city. Anyone and everyone who ever lived here will be in it with, hopefully, some tree information and other articles I find, be they in the courthouse or newspaper.

If you need any help with lookups or information, please don't hesitate to ask. I hope to get my webpage updated and new information added. I like to post things, esp for folks who don't live in the area, to help them with their research.

I also have all the papers (Virginia Pilot) from 1995-1999... I was collecting them to get obits and other articles, I am way behind on that! LOL!

Yes, I know Kay...we've been in touch since about 1995. We went to Arkansas a few years back and stopped in TN to see Kay, hubby's cousin. She helped me so much in getting the MIDGETTE lineage up for hubby's family. Now, I have so many of them ... they take up my whole tree! LOL!

I have been out of the loop for some time also on genealogical research, just dabbling in it here and there, I need to get back to it again like I use too...you can ask Kay... I was living, breathing... you name it... genealogy!

My son's are MIDGETTE's... their grandfather was Robert Lee Midgette, their great grandfather was Robert Lee Russell Migette, great great grandfather was Oliver Chaytor Midgette, 3rd great grandfather was Oliver O. Midgett, then Bannister S. Midgett (wife: Dolly) ... just to give you a run down.

I would love to find out if Dolly (Dorothy Payne or Paine) was of Indian heritage. I was told by another cousin she was. That is why I am seriously considering doing a DNA on the boys, to see if there might be any indication of Indian heritage. My dau, from my previous marriage, is Miami, Quapaw and Ottawa...it's been a blast and fustrating to trace her Indian lineage! Her paternal grandmother has the Indian lineage.

I'll look into the website and see about the DNA testing.

And I think we have meet before, as your name rings a bell with me.

Nice talking with you....hope to do DNA soon! ;)
Annmarie

Hi Annmarie,

I am one of the founders of the Lost Colony Research Group, founded in 2007. Our website is http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~molcgdrg/

I established the Lost Colony DNA project at Family Tree DNA in April of 2007.

I am not working with Fred Willard, have nothing to do with him nor will I. He has put our DNA project on his website at bait to get people to join his group for a fee. If you notice, the link to the DNA project on his site goes to Family Tree DNA and our Lost Colony DNA project. He does not have any connection to this DNA project.

Back to the topic at hand. I also have the Elks project and sorry to say, we have yet to find any Elks who does not match the English Elks family known to have come to Pitt Co through Albemarle from Virginia. We were so hoping to find some Native DNA there, but no dice.

If you are a member of the Hyde County rootsweb list, I've been posting the DNA results as they come back for all of the surnames. I believe that sharing is critical for success for this kind of project.

Do you know Kay Lynn Sheppard? She too is a Midgett and is working with us. She is the hostess for the Hyde county list. If you don't know you, you might want to make her acquaintance.

I'd certainly welcome one of your sons is they are Midgett's. No need to test both - their yline DNA should match since it is given to the sons through the father and follows the surname.

Roberta Estes
robertajestes@att.net

My husband is 5th cousin twice removed through Thomas Midyett Sr and Bethany and 6th cousin twice removed through Matthew and Judith to Sally Mary Gibbs.

Interesting project. Checked my files, have nothing on Hepsibeth other than she was married to David Fisher.

Is this the DNA project that the LOST COLONY is doing? I know they were trying to get DNA testing done with a group of folks that were traced to Samuel Elk (Indian).

My hubby's great great grandfather was Bannister S. Midgette (wife: Dorothy Payne). Story has it Dorothy or Dolly as she was called, was to have been Indian, but noone knows what tribe or anything.

Has this DNA project shown any link to Indian DNA?

Fred Willard is the one who's been working on the Lost Colony. Haven't talked to him in some time, don't know how the project is going.

Just may have to do a DNA test on my boys. :)

Thanks for the info.
Annmarie

More Midgett mtdna Results for Hatteras Island, NC

The DNA results are beginning to come in now from Family Tree DNA for the Hatteras Family Reconstruction project. This is focused on Hatteras Island in current Dare, former Hyde and Currituck Counties in NC.

As they do, we post the genealogy and explain how this works, of course, with the hope that others will see the benefit and want to test as well. Between all of us, we can reconstruct many of the early settlers who are our ancestors - and lots of people can benefit. Here's why. When someone tests for a particular line - anyone descended from that line benefits. With mitochondrial DNA, which is the maternal line - there is little question about "who's your mother", so we assume that all descendants share the same DNA info, and those descended through females only carry the same mtdna.

On the male lines, we presume that unless there is an undocumented adoption of some sort, that the yline (paternal - surname) DNA matches all the men who carry the surname - however - because we're also skeptics and realists - and undocumented adoptions did happen - we encourage men of this line to test to be sure you match the line you think you match. Also, Native people adopted the surnames of their neighbors and those they admired - so we expect to find Native folks carrying white surnames, probably of their neighbors - but not matching the neighbors DNA - so when we post the y-lines, please consider testing if you haven't.

This group of women share their genealogy and their mitochondrial DNA.

This DNA participant is haplogroup K, also European, but less common than haplogroup H.

1. participant
2. mother
3.
Hi Susan,

Well lets see. Annie Midgett was my Grandmother. Exact information is sketchy, however I know she was the daughter of Sanford Long Midgett and Minnie Lee Strickland. She was born in Georgia, but lived for some time in North Carolina.

Family information about her is fairly vague. Some rumor in the family about her either being born out of wedlock and/or exactly the number of children she had. My relations with her was through my Grandmother, Gwen who was her daughter.

What do you know? Maybe I can help you piece it together.
Thanks, Lynn

My grandmother's sister Lillie or Lillian was married to a Midgett in the early 1900's. I am not sure what his name was and I was looking for more information on the marriage. Lillian was an African American who lived in Southern Missouri. Cape Girardeau and later moved to St. Louis where she died in 1949. In the 1920 census (I think) she was listed as widowed.

Do you have more information on the Midgetts and where they lived.

France my family is white. But with such a name as Midgett, we may be family somewhere down the line. I reminber my farther talking about the men all being in the Coastguard. In fact there is a Coastguard ship that was named after the family. And that's were the book ( the Mighty Midgetts ) came from, the history of the Midgetts in the coastguard.

Hi Eda,
I had Essie Lee Midgett in my computer although I only had a circa 1917 birthdate for her and the 1920 census shows her as Essie B. As far as I know she was no kin to me but I've done years of research on the Midgett family and just happened to have her listed. From the census records, this is what I have:

Source: 1920 Prairie Co., AR (Hazen Twp.) pg. 3B

House 553/584
Midgett, William H. 32 (Head) MS US US
Ollie M. 24 (Wife) MO MO MO
Essie B. 2 7/12 (Dau) AR MS MO
Henry 1 6/12 (Son) AR MS MO

Besides Henry being her brother she also had siblings named Wesley and Hazel. Ollie M, wife of William Henry Midgett, was Ollie Mary Gibbons. This is all I have on your family but maybe it will give you a place to start looking. Happy Hunting!!
