My grandfather is a Micale

My grandfather is Tillio Micale, and was born in St. Marys Pennsylvania. His father was Angelo Micale, the owner of the Micale Mines in Pennsylvania. Angelo immigrated from Sicily (exactly where, I don't know) somewhere around the turn of the last century. If anyone possibly knows where the Micales came from in Sicily, that'd be great to know. I am trying to take my grandfather (who as far as I know, may be the oldest living Micale) back to Sicily to see his family. He has never been there though, and I don't know where to go. Thank you.

Dear Josh,
as majority the Micale familyname is diffuse mainly on the east side of Sicily: Catania and Messin provinces.
My family also is from this area.

The Micales mainly come from the north-eastern part of Sicily, that is to say the province of Messina. Probably the coast that goes from Messina to Sant'Agata di Militello. It is a family name no so limited, but not so spread. Of course, some may have first go to other parts of Sicily, and later, in another generation, gone to USA, but most probable como from Messina. If your Micales went to Pennsylvania, perhaps they came through New York, and there are the registers of, if I'm not wrong, Staten Island (try to find the web, there is one). Good luck!

My Micale family came from the town of Naso in the province of Messina. In June of 2006 I visited Naso where my uncle and cousins still live. My father, Beniamino, came over in 1946 after Italy was liberated by the US. My grandfather had already been working in the US since he was bout 13 years old and had been travelling back and forth. His name was Antonino Micale and he first came to the US to join his cousins in Atlantic City in the concrete business. He eventually settled in Camden, NJ where he worked for Allied Chemical. He died in 1960. My great grandafather's name was Francesco. I'm very interested in tracing a family tree. If anyone has family lineage connections to my grandfather or greatgranfather contact me.

Hi, Ferdinando "Nando" Micale!
Your message of today was very curious for me, so I write. Your father Beniamino went to the US in 1946; my father came to Venezuela in 1949. Your grandfather was Antonino, who died 1960; my grandfather was Cono, died in 1965 and had a brother named Antonino, or Antonio, older than him. My grandfather and his brother (and two other brothers, Filippo and Francesco) were sons of Cono (again) who was son of Francesco Micale, my grandgrandgrandfather. They were born in Capo d'Orlando, by the time part of the same Naso. I dont't know what the relation is, probably there is one. But what is more surprising is that you are Ferdinando and I am Fernando. I have the idea there is in the US a Ferdinando Micale, architect, around 43, is that you? I'm about the same age... I'll look for the reply, and by the way I apologize for mi english, because my usual language is spanish...

Fernando - It is great to meet someone with a very similar name, who might also be a relative. Because my name is close to the more Latino name Fernando, people who don't know me well call me Fernando. My first name comes from my mother's family (Barbalace) who is from the small fishing village of San Ferdinando, in Calabria. Despite a concerted effort by my primary school teachers to Americanize my name to Fred, I am known as Nando.

The names that you noted as your grandfather and his brothers and their father and grandfather are all familiar names, but I remember my father saying that his granfather was Francesco not Cono. I will check with him this week. It would seem that we must be related as second or third cousins at least.

I am a principal architect and urban planner (turning 43 this year) in firm headquartered in Philadelphia (www.wrtdesign.com) and am married with a 12-year old daughter. Do you have a family?

I'll get back to you about family names, and look forward hearing

Ciao, Nando Micale

My grandfather Antonino had two full siblings - Antonina and Calogero (came to the US to Atlantic City, NJ)and two half siblings - Carmelo (married a woman from Capo D'Orlando and moved to Australia) and Marianna. His father (my great grandfather) was Francesco and his first wife was Concetta Lazzaro. My father doesn't know know names beyond that, but he said it can be very confusing because Micale was a very common name and they were spread out from Messina to Palermo. Antohter family name was Randazzo, my grandmother's maiden name.

Hi, Ferdinando,

this is a curious thing, at least I think so... I knew about a Ferdinando Micale architect when a cousin of mine told me she read a letter in "letters/Bride's magazine" or sometihng similar, years ago.

I think muy grandgrandfather Cono had two brothers, Francesco an Carmelo; their father was Francesco, too: is perhaps your grandgrand the brother of mine?... They were from Capo d'Orlando-Naso, as I wrote in the previous message. My grand Cono was born in 1884, his father Cono around 1837 (as you see, abot 40 years between each generation...). The Cono of 1837 was married to Carmelina Russo, if that helps... Ask your father if he remembers the Capo d'Orlando wood industry named Cono Micale: if he knows of a parenthood, there we have the link! I cannot do so, as my father died years ago.

It is funny I also visited Capo d'Orlando in 2006 (august-september). It is funny we have not only the same name, but about the same age: 45. I am married, with two sons (8 and 6). But the more incredible coincidence is that I am architect too.... I have my own small firm in Caracas, and also teach at the university.

Would an email address be an easier way? You tell me... and I will be looking forwad to hearing from you...

So, ciao too,

Fernando Micale
