Does anyone have any information on William S Mhoon;son of James E Mhoon, who was the son of Stark Mhoon. I need to find the name of his first wife, and where and when he died. thanks a lot

James E. Mhoon may have been married to Finy Dane, born 1832. They were married in 1852, I believe, if I am reading correctly. The information was taken from the Washington County history book under information for Stark Mhoon. I am a descendant of James M. Mhoon, who was the son of William Green Mhoon, second son of Stark Mathenia Mullin Mhoon. Please let me know if this information is not correct.

Jan, you know so much. While I don't think there is a connection between my John and Josiah Mhoons of NC and AL, I am researching for clues. We also have James G. and William S. from the early 1800s who went to NC/House of Burgesses. Any connection to what you know? V Mhoon

James G. Mhoon b. 1840, Franklin, Alabama, is my gg grandfather. He is the nephew of the William S. Mhoon b. 1801 in Bertie County, N. C. My records go back two more generations to Josiah Mhoon, b. abt. 1774. Much of my information came from the Mhoontown Cemetery near Cherokee, Alabama It's great to find others interested in the Mhoon name. I was interested in seeing a reference to the name McKee in one of the messages on this board. There is a McKee Mhoon living in Northern California who is a descendant of John B. Mhoon, brother to my gggf James G. Mhoon. I've also been searching, unsuccessfully, for the origin of Mhoon. I'm looking forward to exchanging information with you and others on this message board.

Tom; The origin of the Mhoon surname comes from William Du Mohun or Du Moion . He took his name from a village in Normandy France. He was one of the Followers of William the Conqueror, and fought alongside William at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. He was awarded about 56 manors and estates for his bravery, among them was Dunster Castle. Check the Books; English origins of American Families. Jan

Jan - Thanks for the note, that's the first time I have seen that connection. I have found Mohun as an alternate spelling to Mhoon in early(ca. 1750-1800) North Carolina land records. I also have references to a John Mhoon(Mohun?) serving in the Revolutionary War. I'll have to go back and to some more digging around in those records. Have you been able to make a tie from Mohun in England to Mhoon in this country? Thanks again - look forward to hearing from you. Tom
