I read Lourline Mhoon York's message and was intrigued by James E. Mhoon. She states these Mhoons were in Arkansas from the early 1850's to around 1868 when they moved to Bell County, Texas. First of all, I come from the William Pleasant Moon family from Holland, Temple, and Belton Texas. Most of my relatives are buried at Holland, Bell Cty, Texas including my mother.

The James Mhoon intrigued me because I have tracked a James Mhoon from Bertie Cty, NC (in connection with Spiveys) down to Colbert Cty, AL (old State of Franklin). If you go to www.usgenweb.com, click on Alabama, click on Colbert Cty, click on cemetaries, there is a Mhoontown Cemetary there. Also a story on the Mhoons from Bertie Cty, NC.

I believe the Mhoons and the Moons are the same families. Trying to sort it out. Any help would be appreciated.
I have tons of info on the Moons. Some from Bucks Cty,, PA, down thru VA, NC, SC, GA - and then Grandpa over into Texas.

The James Mhoon mentioned inconnection with Lourine (Mhoon) York, was born in 1832 in East Tennessee and was the son of Stark Mhoon (born 1809/11 in NC). Stark Mhoon was in Washington County Arkansas by 1837. James Mhoon married Finy/ Purfina Dame in Washington County, Arkansas in 1851. He was drafted into the Confederate army in 1862, but, along with his brothers, deserted after one month. James and the Dame brothers moved to Greenwood County, Kansas before 1865, as they are found on that state's state census. The 1870 census finds the James Mhoon (Moon) family in Bell County Texas, and in 1880 they were in Lamar County, Texas. I have not located them since that. As far as I know, there is no William Pleasant in that family. The Alabama Mhoons were a different branch of the family than the Arkansas Mhoons. Many of the Alabama Mhoons are Black, while the Arkansas Mhoon's claim to be of Cherokee/Catawba origin. Jan

In response to Jan Mhoon's reply of Mhoon/Moon, I know a lot of Alabama Moons were Black because the Moons (and probably Mhoons) appear to be fairly wealthy people and had a lot of slaves. When slaves were freed they often times took on their masters last name.

I recently saw your mesage mentioning the Black Mhoon of Alabama. I am a descendent of a slave of the Alabama Mhoons. James G Mhoon to be exact. His son James E Mhoon eventually relocated to Madison County, Mississippi and took my G-G-Grandmother and her family with him. Do you know of any historical records of the Mhoons and their slaves that would help me in my research of my family.

Stan; Sorry I cannot help you much with the Alabama branch of the Mhoon family, since mine were in Arkansas. I do know that some of the Alabama Mhoons went west during the gold rush, and settled in California. They never returned to Alabama, as far as I know. I don't know how the Arkansas and Alabama Mhoons are related. Our branch, supposedly, stems from Cherokee/Catawba lines. Have you search the web site for slave naratives? I believe that I found some mentions of the Alabama Mhoons on it, but I can't be absolutely sure. I hope you find your ancestors. I will be glad to share any information that I come across. Our family is somewhat hard to research. Jan

Hi Stan.

I am also a descendant of Black Mhoons who were probably owned by James G. Mhoon's family in Alabama.

My ancestor (great great great grandfather) FEYTON Mhoon says on census records that he was born in Alabama, but he lived in Tunica County, Mississippi near what is now called Mhoon Landing. Feyton's son Josh was my great great grandfather. Josh's son Leo was my grandfather.

Interesting. It is true that most of the older Black Mhoons from the 1870 census were born in Alabama, and were probably the former slaves of James G Mhoon and his family. I just wish that there was someway to find a list of his slaves by names. My G-G-GrandMother was Lucy Mhoon. My G-Grandfather as Calvin Mhoon, who later changed his name from Mhoon to Harris was born in 1842 in Alabama. Stan.
