Searching back to Josiah Mhoon shows that the family name on this line was Mohoon and became Mhoon.

I noted a reference to John Mohoone, Virginia, and was wondering if anyone has information that may tie these all together.

Thanks,

Bob,
I have been trying to trace the Mhoon family backwards past Josiah across the Atlantic. Jan Stark and a Heather have al sorts of info. I would like to be sure this is the right trail.
Look for their messages. Seems there was a William de Moion in France whose son, ...de Mohun fought with W. the Conquer. He went to England with William the C. Then we jump to the colonies to spellings like Mohoon (Josiah). A descendant of John Mhoon and wife Mary Spivey Bate tells me that all her papers on John Mhoon have it "M'hoon". In my great grandftaher's yearbook from Princeton (@1850) has his name John Bell "M'hoon"
That is the last I know of the appostrophy. My grandfather on down spell it without the appotrophy. I cannot say all this is true. My dad is 84 today and I am trying to research for him because his family lore has John Mhoon (husband of Mary) in the Revolutionary War. So far I need to go back and look for these other spellings. Family first names and neighbors in Bertie Co., NC, are good clues when lookingat wills and property and marriage bonds. Hope this helps.
V. Mhoon

The apostrophe-M'hoon-was probably an attempt by some to show that a letter or letters were left out of the name.

Check http://tinyurl.com/3l7dp and you will see two named Robert Mohoon in Cornwall / Devonshire. I got the record details from HeritageQuest. The other one I'm trying to tie in or eliminate is HEZEKIAH MOHOON shown in Martin County NC census of 1790. Were you able to get any further with this link http://tinyurl.com/3l7dp and Revolutionary War?

Still a tangled web, but maybe we can untangle it...

BTW Verona, I understand you also met my sister Mary Kendall Maginnis from Baton Rouge.

NJOY.

Hi Bob,

I am pretty sure the Hezekiah Mohoon you speak of is somehow related to the bunch in Bertie County, North Carolina. I am just not sure how he is related. Martin County is right next to Bertie County.
in census records, Stark Mhoon alternatively uses his birth date as 1809 or 1811. Those two years just so happen to be when two children were born to Susannah Hughes and a Joel Mahoon/Mohun (the thing about surnames during this time period is that most of them were spelled phonetically as I'm sure you already know). This is found in North Carolina Bastardy Bonds by Camin & Camin. Also, in William Green Mhoon's application to be a citizen of the Cherokee nation he stated that Sally Hughes was Stark Mhoon's mother. All this is just too coincidental!
Joel "Mhoon" eventually married someone else; the name escapes me. However, he is mentioned in the estate of Eli Mohun (1800) and Hezekiah Mohun (1793) in Bertie County, North Carolina. A Jesse Mohun was granted administration in both estates.
Unfortunately, I do not have a copy of the name of the woman Joel Mhoon married. I was busy searching a different line of mine before I moved from Washington DC to Germany and I didn't make a copy. Now I'm kicking myself (-:

Dear Bob,
Just found your message on the internet. I have been away from genealogy for the past year. Have been worried about Marry & family since the hurricane. Tried calling but the # is no longer listed. Hope all is well for them. Please email me or ask her to email me when she has a minute. Thanks, your cousin Verona

Would the person your Joel Mhoon married after Sally Hughes be Mary Ashburn?
Joel Mohun married Mary Ashburn on 8 Sept 1800 in Bertie County, NC.
I am researching this family.
